Bird Bible for Ecuador arrives. Strengthen your doormats.

There are probably only two ways of approaching this book. Firstly on your knees, bowing low and, secondly, after several weeks of serious weight-training. I have recently come back from a short bird-watching holiday to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. I knew these books were coming out, but they weren't out in time for me. So, like thousands of birdwatchers in the past, I had to make do with Hilty & Brown's "Birds of Colombia" (Princeton University Press) as the next best thing. Hilty & Brown is an EXCELLENT book, but Ecuador has some 500 more bird species than Colombia and is arguably the richest birding country on the planet. A comparison is instructive. Hilty & Brown's paperback covers its remit in 820 pages and weighs 1.3kg. Ridgely & Greenfield consists of two paperback volumes totalling nearly 1600 pages which,in their thick cardboard slipcase, weigh 3.1 kg ! Hence the need for weight-training - even so, these may be more than you can comfortably carry and even the authors suggest you leave one volume at home ! Both Paperbacks are called "The Birds of Ecuador" but one is sub-titled "Vol. I. Status, Abundance & Taxonomy", whilst the other is "Vol. II. Field Guide". They are VERY different. Volume II is the more immediately traditional. It is 740 pages long, has nearly 100 colour plates illustrating the birds of Ecuador and is supported by a text giving details of each bird, habits, voice etc. and a distribution map. Volume I is 850 pages long and only has one illustration. It has an 80-page section on various topics such as ecosystems, migration, conservation, a history of Ecuadorian birdwatching, a gazeteer. The rest is a detailed account for each species of abundance and distribution in different districts and important birding sites in Ecuador. Are there any limitations ? Yes, chiefly geographical ones. The authors have deliberately left out the Galapagos (which belong to Ecuador) and have restricted seabirds to those that can be seen for a few kilometres out to sea. They also omit the large "Disputed Territory" which either belongs to Ecuador or Peru depending on whose map you look at - on balance this is probably a wise precaution. Some of the illustrations look as if they have come from Ridgely's masterwork on the Birds of South America but since this is only appearing at the rate of about one volume every decade this is hardly a criticism. Do you need both volumes - given that you can buy them separately if you want ? The answer is probably YES. I think if you had only bought volume I you would definitely NEED volume II - the Field Guide. If you had only bought Volume II you would WANT Volume I as well. Ecuador should be on the wish list of every travelling birdwatcher and these books should therefore be on the shopping list. Without serious competition, they are the immediate "Bible" for the birds of Ecuador and should be treated with reverence as a labour of love, a work of high scholarship and a delight to birdwatchers everywhere.

A first-class new South American bird guide

This field guide to the birds of Ecuador is the first covering this small country with a staggering 1600 species of birds.
The text, focusing on identification and describing appearance, habitat, habits, and voice, is detailed and incorporates the latest information from the people most knowledgeable about Ecuador's birds. The paintings on the 96 plates are beautiful, among the finest of any field guide anywhere, and seem thoroughly accurate. The birds are painted in standardized poses, which allows a focus on identification. Unlike almost all field guides to countries in the tropics, all are by one artist, with the resulting benefits of consistency. The guide seems to make the identification of difficult families like flycatchers or antbirds or Ecuador's 132 species of hummingbirds easier (well, less impossible) than ever. Unlike other South American guides, all species, including migrants, are illustrated, and all in color.
The 1600 species distribution maps are not at the world-class level of North American maps or even the new India guide, but they are tremendously helpful and, given the state of information in the tropics, a great accomplishment and a major advance. It is convenient that they are right in the text, with altitude information (critical for the Andean region) attached.
Since Ecuador has about half of the species in South America, this book will be valuable for anyone looking at birds in the Amazon basin or northern South America.
Note that the field guide is volume 2 of the set. Volume I has detailed information on taxonomy, status, and especially occurence and distribution within Ecuador, plus general information about Ecuadorian geography and ornithology, which would have made the field guide impossibly large. (It's massive as is.)

HUGE and No Galapagos Birds. Unmanageable as a "Field Guide". Disappointed.

While this 'field guide' to Ecuador has excellent plates it suffers in three very important ways. 1) It is huge! Yes, Ecuador has about twice as many birds as are typically seen in US guides, but because of the added text this book isn't going to be a practical travel book. 2) the plates and distribution are on different pages. When you use a guide like this in the field you find yourself having to spend more time flipping through the book. and (most importantly) 3) It EXCLUDES the Galapagos Islands! yes, there are plenty of guides for the Galapagos Islands. But if you bring them AND this book you are looking at some serious SERIOUS weight.

So if they named this "Birds of Mainland Ecuador", dropped the 'Field Guide' designation and clarified the location, I think I would be up there in the 5 star range.But then I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

I would think they could do the same book more like Garrigues' "Birds of Costa Rica". It would be a much more useful guide.

I suppose what one COULD do is slice up the plates and bring them, but then you wouldn't have the distribution maps. That goes against the grain through.

Organization Issue

I am unable to understand the reviewer who began with the sentence: "How does one rate a book with no words in it? The only way to do it is by description." The book clearly has words in it. It is organized alphabetically, albeit a Japanese alphabet. The crests are organized by motif and the table of contents and index clearly explain the structure of the book. Unless we were reading different books, I found that the book was a significant asset in examining the range and topics of Japanese crests. It is what it is -- an extensive presentation of crests. It provides insight into the objects chosen by Japanese culture to be placed in these highly visible and socially important family icons. Variations of the crests' themes are interesting - - how many ways can a stylized arrow be presented? The Japanese ties to the entire range of nature and human constructs emerge as one peruses the book. Admittedly, it doesn't have the plot of "War and Peace", but it is not intended to do so. I think that this book has value to designers, artists, students of Japanese art and culture, and hobbyists looking for Japanese motifs. I won't haul it around constantly for a good read, but I will consult it as need and interest dictate.

Pretty Pictures - Not suitable for medieval research

Following the Meiji Restoration in the nineteenth century, the Japanese people were granted a number of perogatives formerly reserved to the noble and military castes. Among these priveleges was the right to have household arms variously called kamon, monsho, or simply mon. As a result, Japanese around the nation went out and acquired kamon for themselves. The Matsuya Piece Goods Store catalog satisfied their demand for new clothes with nice spiffy kamon on them.
While the Matsuya catalog does provide a cyclopedic view of late nineteenth century notions of what kamon should look like, it does not provide reliable information for those interested in premodern Japan. This is a problem shared with most books about kamon whether in English or Japanese. However, there are a few books available in East Asian libraries and some even currently in print in Japan which do link kamon to clans, families, regions, historical periods, and even specific individuals. If your interest in kamon is of a historical nature, I recommend that you seek these out. If, however, your interest is primarily artistic, this is a fine book with well rendered depictions of a vast aray of these designs.

If you are interested in what Japanese military bearings looked like in the early 17th century, then you would do well to acquire a copy of O-umajirushi: A 17th-Century Compendium of Samurai Heraldry by Xavid "Kiho" Pretzer. This work contains images of a variety of flags, battle standards, and other military bearings many of which incorporate kamon. If you are interested in a chronological study of Japanese genealogy and kamon then you would do well to acquire a copy of 大武鑑 "Daibukan" by Hashimoto a copy of which is currently for sale at the Japanese Amazon website. "Daibukan" is in Japanese. It identifies the owners of kamon and often gives other information about rank and titles along with family trees. It does not provide Japanese blazon for the kamon depicted.

Nice clean cut stuff.

This stuff is eye candy to anyone who does graphic design of any sort that uses 2D graphics. My mother gets ideas for quilting patterns and I've been inspired several times while looking through the book and gone and loaded up photoshop and started messin around. This stuff is surprisingly beuitful and fascinating when you notice how simple the designs are.

Geris had found his passion, and from that point forward, he dedicated his life to it. From working extra hours at a grocery store to pay for gym memberships to hitchhiking across his country's border for wrestling try-outs to running away from home so he could go to college to wrestle, Harry Geris displayed a love and dedication for his sport like few ever have. More than that though, Geris had character. It was that character that shined throughout his journey, which carried a callow, naive Dutch boy who had never stepped foot on a wrestling mat to three Olympic games. It was not only that Geris became an Olympian that is so intriguing, but how he became an Olympian and the adventures he had along the way. This book walks you through an amazing, and amazingly humble, man's journey.

Inspirational and Motivational Story!

This book is a must read for everyone, wrestler or not.

The journey of Harry Geris is truely inspirational. Right from the beginning Harry was faced with adversity however his passion and determination lead him to become a three time Olympian.

The book was very well written. The author did a amazing job of painting Harry's story and continuing his legacy.

This book was really amazing! Like others, I too couldn't put it down, nor did I want to!
Harry Geris lived an incredible life. Like most it had its ups and downs but Harry always pushed through. He always poured his heart and soul into his passion.
This book really does make you feel good inside and makes you want to try harder and to not give up! Its message can easily be applied to whatever it is in your life that you want to achieve.
I'm really pleased that this story was written. It is true, so many of Canada's best are never heard of.
My thanks to the author, your father’s story is doing what you hoped it would….. it's inspiring others to believe, push harder and to not give up!

What a great book! When I started reading it I found I couldn't put it down. The book is a true story about a North American wrestling hero Harry Geris. His unrelenting determination against all odds as he battled his way to three Olympics has inspired me to never quit. This book is well recommended for any athlete who needs inspiration in their training.

Still loving it!!

In the third installment of the new Gossip Girl series:
Jack's mom got a job on a french soap opera and wants to move her and Jack back to Paris but Jack doesn't want to go so her boyfriend J.P.'s dad suggests she move into one of the condos he's trying to sale and be the spokesmodel for it. She's happy until she finds out J.P. and a new puppy plan on moving with her and then she feels smothered.
Avery gets an internship with a magazine and at first she's treated likd Andy in The Devil wears Prada but then she's asked to help a writer with an article about Jack that will tell the lie that she's hooking up with her boyfriend's dad.
After her recent stint by going to Spain, Baby is asks to complete some hours of therapy by the headmistress of the school and is having trouble finding someone she likes because she doesn't like them telling her that she is co-dependent on men.
After his break up with Kelsey, Rhys goes on a downward spiral by quitting the swim team and hanging out with some pot smoking losers and starts smoking himself.
Owen realizes the consequences of betraying Rhys: the swim team now hates him even though he is made captain and he finds out his relationship with Kelsey has no substance whatsoever besides hooking up.
Overall, I loved this book and the whole series. One of the things I love, which I'm sure will change is the fact that most of the characters are virgins in the original series everyone except for Blair had already given it up by book three. But overall this series is great, I really think that some people should give it a chance instead of bemoaning the end of the original one. You'll love the characaters and the storylines. Even though the ending of this one is a bit too happily ever after (but some books in the original series were like that too), I still love it and hope for more dramatic cliffhangers in the next one.
Grade: A - (only because of the ending)

First off, I'm 26--above the demographic for the books. With that said, I'm addicted to this series and I LOVE the Carlyles. Awhile back, the New Yorker called the Gossip Girl series as a whole a "comedic fairy tale." I think the Carlyles has managed to continue this tradition with plucky aplomb, as it follows the loves, lives and misdaventures of the Carlyle triplets (Owen, Baby, and Avery) and their contemporaries (Rhys and Jack) from their private schools.

In this book, Avery has an internship at a prestigious magazine, Baby is sentenced to mandatory therapy, and Owen finds out that love in New York is a little more complicated than he anticipated. Jack realizes that fairy tale princesses have responsibilities that come with the title, and Rhys realizes that you can only escape the life you were born to lead for so long. From uptown escapades to decadent downtown parties, the entire book is frothy fun.

But it's more than that. Part of the reason why I love these books is because I volunteer a lot with teens. And I love sharing and introducing these books to them. I know they have a bad reputation, but I've found teens who read them recognize them as pure literary fantasy, delighting in the over-the-topness of the plots and the fun details. Doestoyevsky it's not, but for a smart fun read that appeals to ALL levels (check out the Shakespeare allusions!), I really recommend this series! Plus, it's a great way to get a convo rolling with the teen in your life!

I think this book was enjoyable. Definitaley better than the 2nd in this series. I loved the ending that Jack and Avery became friends, and I like the idea of Jack and Owen too. Though I'm not sure about Avery& Rhys:D
I'm looking forward to the next!

Flash cards were the best

I'm not going to lie, I read some of the first chapter of this book but primarily just used the tear out flashcards in the back to review rhythms. I use this book with a class so it wasn't necessary for me to read the entire book. So I guess I paid all that money for some flashcards but they were absolutely good flashcards to review rhythms that I would be tested on.

Not as much of a course as a short phrasebook

This particular course has always been the weakest spot in usually very good Colloquial series. Even though this is a completely new book, I'm sorry to say Routledge hasn't taken into account any of the massive criticism directed at the previous editions, and the "course" is unlike other Colloquial courses, being more of a phrasebook with a very limited vocabulary.

There are three Colloquial Arabic books published by Routledge, but only one (Colloquial Arabic of the Gulf) lives up to the high standard in Routledge's Colloquial Series. Having said that, even Colloquial Arabic of Egypt, though rather "light" by Routledge standards, is far better than this course.

This book is unsatisfactory since:
1. Learning a new language is reasonably hard, and most Colloquial books published by Routledge are about 300-400 pages. This one in barely 200 pages and, what is more, its font is enourmous. This means that the material in this book compares to 1/3 in another Colloquial book. I don't think Arabic is that much easier...

2. In this very short book, you'll learn very little vocabulary. Colloquial courses like Colloqual Italian, Colloquial Czech or even Colloquial Icelandic teach over 2000 words. This book, in sharp contrast, does not even reach 1000 words.

3. The grammar is explained very briefly, and you don't get any understanding of it.

I'm very interested in Arabic, and the Arabic of the Levant in particular, so it's very disappointing that this book don't live up to the most rudimentary expectations. Routledge is renowned as the worlds leading publisher of high quality language courses (justified in 99% of the cases) and I sincerely hope that they will remove this disgrace and replace it with a book worthy their reputation. If you want to learn Colloquial Arabic, go to Colloquial Arabic of the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. I'm afraid there's no great course on Levantine Arabic to recommend, but Elihay's course in four volumes is far better than this one, so is Kattab's Lebanese Arabic.

Not enough practice in reading the script

I think this book starts out in the right direction by spending adequate time on the Arabic script and then follows up with a brief linguistic analysis of phonological features. Unfortunately, I feel that way too much of the vocabulary, useful phrases, and reading exercises are presented in transliteration rather than actual Arabic script.

I assume a purchaser of this book would be well informed of how difficult any of the dialects of Arabic are, so it's my opinion that forcing us to "sink or swim" with the script from the beginning would have been better. Or at least give us a choice. There's no way a beginner can go and back-form a vocab word in Arabic script based on the transliterations and be correct 100% of the time, especially in regards to the vowel diacritics.

I think the recordings could use better planning as well. More repetitions of sounds in the beginning lessons, at various rates (slow-medium-conversational). A lot of the vowels and consonants sound the same. The native speaker is either poorly recorded, or there is a lack of training for the student on how to create and repeat sounds, for example the difference in articulation of pharyngeal and uvular consonants.

About the Author
Ann B. Dobie is Professor Emerita of English at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where she directed graduate studies in rhetoric and the university's writing-across-the-curriculum program. She is the author or coauthor of six college writing textbooks, compiler and editor of three literary anthologies, and author of numerous articles on literature and composition. Her latest books are WIDE AWAKE IN THE PELICAN STATE: CONTEMPORARY LOUISIANA STORIES (available in 2007) and FIFTY-EIGHT DAYS IN THE CAJUNDOME SHELTER, which will be available in early 2008. For 13 years, she served as director of the National Writing Project of Acadiana. She is now State Coordinator of the Louisiana Writing Project and a consultant to the National Writing Project.

Excellent tool for Literary Criticism

If you intend to write a literary criticism using any of those detailed in this book, I highly recommend this as a guide of what questions to consider, and how to write the criticism in general. Extremely detailed, and with a large quantity of quality information. I read a lot, and this is only the second book review I've done, for I feel people should be aware what this can do for them.

Everything I needed

It is an excellent book that summarises literature theories in an understandable manner. It also provides example essays and readings to help you put the theories into practice. This book was of great value and is a great intoduction to literary criticism. I would reccommend it to anyone curious about the different methods involving literary criticism.
