The Music Room: A Memoir, by Namita Devidayal

When Namita is ten years old, her mother takes her to Kennedy Bridge, a seamy neighborhood in Bombay, home to hookers and dance girls. There, in a cramped one-room apartment lives Dhondutai, the last living disciple of two of the finest Indian classical singers of the twentieth century: the legendary Alladiya Khan and the great songbird Kesarbai Kerkar. Namita begins to learn singing from Dhondutai, at first reluctantly and then, as the years pass, with growing passion. Dhondutai sees in her a second Kesarbai, but does Namita have the dedication to give herself up completely to the discipline like her teacher? Or will there always be too many late nights and cigarettes? And where do love and marriage fit into all of this?
A bestseller in India, where it was a literary sensation, The Music Room is a deeply moving meditation on how traditions and life lessons are passed along generations, on the sacrifices made by women through the ages, and on a largely unknown, but vital aspect of Indian life and culture that will utterly fascinate American readers.

From Publishers Weekly
Devidayal is a reluctant ten-year-old when she shows up for her first lesson in classical Indian singing, but the occasion marks the beginning of her musical lifetime, as chronicled in her new memoir. As a student at an Anglican school in Bombay, Devidayal is more at home speaking English and playing badminton than practicing the tanpura, an Indian stringed instrument. But as she progresses from one-note lessons to real ragas, she begins to realize that her mentor, the much-revered but never-quite-famous Dhondutai Kulkarni, offers life lessons as well as music lessons. Through the many stories Dhondutai relays to Devidayal (which range from factual to mythic), the reader is treated to a detailed history of Hindustani classical music and many intimate anecdotes regarding Dhondutai's own gurus, the legendary Bhurji Khan and Kesarbai Kerkar. Devidayal, who graduated from Princeton and now works as a journalist with the Times of India, was a gifted young singer, but lacked the passion to pursue the art professionally. This graceful memoir is a provocative illustration of music's unifying force in a religiously and socially stratified country. (Feb.)

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School—This highly accessible memoir describes the journey of a 10-year-old girl into the higher reaches of classical Indian music. It also tells the history of this ancient art form and the story of some of its greatest performers. Devidayal has now studied with the same teacher, Dhondutai, for more than 20 years. She succeeds in making her extraordinary story interesting even if the music and her country are unfamiliar to readers. Teens can see from the author's journey as a teenage protégé the rewards of rigorous devotion to something they love. They can also see that they have the right to follow their own dreams even if their parents have laid out a different future for them. As the book concludes in the present day, Devidayal continues to study with Dhondutai, but she is also a Princeton-educated professional journalist. This narrative serves to pass on some of the musical and cultural heritage of India even though the author has chosen to devote her life to writing and not to singing itself.—Will Marston, Berkeley Public Library, CA

From Booklist
Devidayal, a journalist with the Times of India, was 10 when she began private lessons with Dhondutai Kulkarni, a disciple of two of India’s most renowned classical singers. In this layered, fascinating story, Devidayal combines moving personal recollections of her teacher with vivid, imagined scenes from Dhondutai’s life and the lives of her gurus. Woven into the intimate stories is a clear, probing introduction to classical Indian music, including its religious and historical influences and the ancient methods that still shape its instruction. A teen in Bombay during the 1980s, Devidayal speaks with self-deprecating humor and  poignancy about her feelings of dislocation as she moved between the “pseudo English world” of her Anglican school and the “Marathi-speaking music universe,” where she initially felt like a foreigner. As she matures, her guru’s music room becomes a cherished connection to tradition and a counterpoint to her hectic, demanding life in contemporary Mumbai. A rich, well-integrated blend of scholarly analysis, cultural insight, and tender homage, Devidayal’s genre-defying title is a holistic celebration of music’s profound, even divine, rewards. --Gillian Engberg

A many-layered story --
By Salman Habib
The Music Room is several things at once: an informal oral history, a social commentary, even a multi-person biography, if one could call it that. The unifying thread of Indian classical music runs through the book, but somehow unexpectedly lightly -- one wishes that the author would have put more of her own reactions to what she was learning and singing. But this is a trivial complaint; Namita Devidayal's written voice, rational and reflective, unaffected and clear-eyed, yet sympathetic and accepting, succeeds admirably in weaving a tapestry of lives of remarkable people, of a sadly fading musical culture, of the contradictions and strengths of Indian society, and of changing times, all in one remarkable book.

To convey so much in a relatively compact format, The Music Room is organized in snapshots -- yet these flow well in time and space, mirroring in some way the structure and time-cycles of a classical music performance. I even read through the book as if going to a long evening concert -- in two absorbing sittings. This is one of those rare books it is impossible not to whole-heartedly recommend.

The Music Room - A must for every musician and Music Lover
By e.k.
Just finished reading Namita Devidayal's 'The Music Room - a memoir'. It touches the inner core of anyone who traverses the sacred world of classical music! Dhondutai Kulkarni (in mid 80s now), Kesarbai Kerkar, the legendary Ustad Alladiya Khan....they just leap to life in each page, as you process the context of their life and art, and what made them the great pillars of Hindustani music that they are! I liked it, particularly because she doesn't deify these great musicians...she presents them in all their 'humanness' (for want of a better word), their eccentricities, foibles, their goodness, their love and yes, their immense talent... everything!! As the late Pandit Ravi Shankar said about this book.. "A must for every musician and music lover"! Pick up a copy if you can!

A Journey Through Sound
By Amazon Customer
"To play a raga, you must see it standing in front of you." India, to the foreign audience, is often impenetrable and overwhelming. A country of more than one billion people and more than 500 languages, it's not surprising that diving into India is like falling splash in the middle of the ocean, with no land in sight. To understand India, it's always better to view it one facet at a time. Trying to take them all in at once can lead to temporary color-blindness.

So if you want to take India one slice at a time, savor it and digest it fully, start with this book. It details the musical career of Namita Devidayal, from the age of ten when she is first introduced to her mentor, through the rest of her life.

The old adage says 'writing about music is as ridiculous as dancing about architecture'. Not in this book. The book's central character is the music and it grows and matures along with little Namita. The music is at once ephemeral and lucid, a phantom that soaks every page.

To understand India, one must understand a thousand things. One of them is its music. There is no better exploration of Indian music in words than this book.

I agree with premise, but some faulty research
By Paul Doland
Several years ago, I read the original version, when it was titled _Food for the Spirit_. I recently picked up this, the current version. There is a new transcript of a radio interview with the auther. Not much else seems different. Possibly some small revisions were made elsewhere in the book, but it is not a substantal revision. I had hoped that the author would have revised more of the material.
Basically, I agree with the premise, that modern treatment of animals cannot be justified by any system of morality. Unfortunatly, some of the author's research was faulty. He relies too much on extra-biblical works of very questionable validity. For Christianity, the author spends an inordinate amount of time discussing "The Gospel of the Holy Twelve" which has about zero evidence for its being genuine. To someone who is not already convinced to be in favor of vegetarianism would suspect that if the author needs to spend so much time on disreputable sources then he can't have a very good case.
Likewise, for Buddhism, much of the pro-vegetarian sutra is not considered to be genuine.
A better tact for the author to have taken might have been to address more how modern inventions such as the factory farm are far different than historical animal husbandry. For Christians, I'd recommend _Is God a Vegetarian?_ The author of that book concludes that Jesus was NOT vegetarian, but Jesus didn't live today either.
For Jews, I'd recommend, _Judaism and Vegetarianism_. Both of these are available here at amazon.com.
Don't get me wrong, there is some good stuff here. But it seems that in an effort to prove his point, the author did not always use due-diligence to verify all the information, and as such weakens his case substantially.

I was hoping for something more in-depth, less of an overview. There wasn't enough of deep experience shared. It was a nice overview of some traditional perspectives.

Helping kids make connections across languages builds new connections across neurons - in effect, growing their brains. -- Kathy Mason, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, Somers School District, Somers, NY.

From the Author
Mnemonics have been around for 4,000 years. Extensive research has shown that students recall substantially more they when they use mnemonics as a memory aid. It is the ideal book to supplement what you use in your studies on a daily basis.

From the Inside Flap
You'll remember what you studies - a day later, a month later ... forever!

Here's the secret of learning that lasts!

For 2500 years, mnemonics (memory devices) have helped students learn better. Maybe you use a mnemonic to remember the number of days in each month ("Thirty days hath September...") which way to set your clock ("Spring forward, fall back") or the order of planets in the solar system ("My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us New Potatoes"). Now, Comic Mnemonics combines lighthearted visual and mnemonic cues to learn Spanish faster and more easily - and to remember what you learned.

You need this book is you want to...
* Make studying fun
* Boost your memory
* Memorize difficult verbs in a snap
* Find conjugations of verbs fast
* Enjoy a quick and easy-to-understand grammar review
* Start a new method of teaching verbs in class
* And much more!

"I wish I'd had this book when I was learning Spanish - really makes learning fun. What a great way to master your verbs!"
~ Kate Lombardi, parent of a student studying Spanish

"Students do respond better to illustrations and mnemonics ... your illustrations are adorable and obvious - but not so cutesy that they are misunderstood."
~ Harriet Barnett, Foreign Language Consultant, Methods Instructor, Manhattanville College, Purchase, N.Y.

"So much better than flash cards! Give me illustrations and crazy phrases anytime. ;Al More eats lunch with Al Less' will always be my favorite!"
~ Jonny "Nacho" Widder, Spanish student, Horace Greeley High School, Chappaqua, N. Y.

The most helpful book I've found yet to help me remember Spanish verb meanings and conjugations.
By Sal R
Great book for anyone having trouble remembering Spanish verbs and their forms. Along with the pictures and key words to help you remember, there are exercises with each word to test yourself. Plus, at the end of the book there are numerous explanations about conjugating the Spanish verbs.

cute but iffy on the practicality
By willing2try
i bought this for my Spanish classroom thinking that mnemonic devices are helpful and fun for my students but the book includes some tricks that are great while others are too much of a stretch to be helpful. in retrospect, an entire book of mnemonic devices didn't really meet the needs of my Spanish 1 students. my favorite feature is the model sentences (where students fill in the blanks) and the charts that display the verb conjugated in both the present tense and preterit tense.

Cute book, good for beginner students
By L. Webb
I purchased this book to help me teach verbs to a Spanish I class. So far, they do recall many of the mnemonic phrases especially the rhyming ones (e.g. Boone leaves the saloon), although the book does not contain as many verbs as I would like, and does nothing to help remember stem-changing verbs (besides listing the conjugations below the cartoon).
Even so, it's a good study aid and we have been using it whenever new verbs come up that are included in this book.

Life at the Speed of Light: From the Double Helix to the Dawn of Digital Life, by J. Craig Venter

In 2010, scientists led by J. Craig Venter became the first to successfully create "synthetic life"-putting humankind at the threshold of the most important and exciting phase of biological research, one that will enable us to actually write the genetic code for designing new species to help us adapt and evolve for long-term survival. The science of synthetic genomics will have a profound impact on human existence, including chemical and energy generation, health, clean water and food production, environmental control, and possibly even our evolution. In Life at the Speed of Light, Venter presents a fascinating and authoritative study of this emerging field from the inside-detailing its origins, current challenges and controversies, and projected effects on our lives. This scientific frontier provides an opportunity to ponder anew the age-old question "What is life?" and examine what we really mean by "playing God." Life at the Speed of Light is a landmark work, written by a visionary at the dawn of a new era of biological engineering.

From Publishers Weekly
Venter (A Life Decoded), a field giant of genetics, makes a persuasive case that synthetic biology will help us understand, appreciate, and improve our own biology. The impatient genius who arrogantly raced the U.S. government to sequence the human genome, Venter scores many firsts in this emerging field, including the creation—nearly from scratch—of the first synthetic bacterium. It was not a pure first, as he used cytoplasm from an existing cell to boot up his synthetic genome—which only deviated slightly from the genome of an existing bacterium. But it&'s a major coup; Venter&'s synthetic genome successfully instructed the cell to create living proteins. We can now change the software of life, which then changes its own hardware, as it were. Venter shares spellbinding stories from the frontiers of genomics—researchers creating living toolboxes out of mechanisms co-opted from varied life forms. For the wary, he notes nature itself mixes and matches species-specific mechanisms: our own mitochondria were once bacteria engulfed by, and incorporated into, our cells. Gene engineering opens new portals of life-designing potential, he argues, and he champions ethics reviews of such work. Venter instills awe for biology as it is, and as it might become in our hands. Agent: John Brockman, Brockman Inc. (Nov.)

From Booklist
When scientists finally succeed in transmitting to another galaxy the digital instructions for building a living organism, they will rely on science that Venter has pioneered. To understand the groundbreaking work Venter has done, however, readers must revisit Hooke’s seventeenth-century discovery of the cell as the primary structure of life and must peer into an anticipated future of teleportation via quantum entanglement. But the narrative largely focuses on the twentieth-century research fulfilling physicist Schrödinger’s hopes of finding the key of life in a biochemical aperiodic crystal. In particular, readers see how the double helix that Watson and Crick first recognized in DNA 60 years ago has become an adaptable scaffold for genetic engineers wielding potent pools for creating new life-forms. Readers will marvel at the potential that genetic engineering holds for making food, purifying water, generating energy, and curing diseases. Though they may wish to consult other sources to explore the philosophical and ethical issues he raises, readers will thank Venter for an insider’s perspective on epoch-making science. --Bryce Christensen

Review
“Life at the Speed of Light provides an important look behind the hyperbolic headlines that often accompany synthetic biology, a guide to the future of life from one of the scientists helping to create it."

“Craig Venter is a singular individual... at once inheritor of molecular biology’s prior triumphs and the wellspring of its future…He compellingly depicts his diverse research as a concerted effort to shuttle biology between the material and the digital worlds…a gripping tale and welcome antidote to dry materials and methods sections that make such sagas feel disembodied and inevitable.”

"[A] remarkable book."

"A great read."
~Ricki Lewis, PhD, PLOS.org

“One of the world's leading scientists delivers a history of molecular biology and its many ramifications depicted as it has been and will continue to be, a creator of the golden age of modern biology. His style is that of a dispatch from the front, urgent and engaged, as only a participant could write it, and the best of its genre since James D. Watson's The Double Helix.”
~Edward O. Wilson, University Research Professor Emeritus, Harvard University

“In 1943 Erwin Schrödinger asked the question “What is life?” Craig Venter decided to find out. The first step in understanding something is to take it apart. The next step is to put it back together. Finally, prove that you haven’t neglected anything by building it yourself from scratch. In this articulate, precise, and uniquely first-person report from the front lines between biology and technology--commendably addressing the role of proteins as well as the nucleotides that code for them--Craig Venter sheds new light on Schrödinger’s question, while explaining how his own pioneering work reading and writing genetic sequences between living cells and computers is enabling life as we know it to take the first steps toward becoming something else. A landmark account.”
~George Dyson, author of Turing's Cathedral and Darwin Among the Machines

“Life at the Speed of Light takes you to the frontier of science to explain the exciting potential of synthetic biology.  Craig Venter, one of our most vivid and iconoclastic scientists,  weaves the history of our understanding of life with his personal journey as one of the key scientists in decoding the human genome, and now one of the leaders of research into programming DNA and even making synthetic living organisms.   It could prove to be one of the most important technologies of this century.”
~Nathan Myhrvold, co-founder of Intellectual Ventures and former Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft

“Humanity is entering a period of radical transformation and one reason is due to Craig Venter's research in creating new life forms based on computer designed synthetic DNA.  Life at the Speed of Light is his beautifully written, powerful and persuasive story on how DNA information and computers will blend in the coming singularity, that watershed in the evolution of humanity beyond which amazing new possibilities for life, society and everything we care about will emerge.”
~Ray Kurzweil, author of How to Create a Mind and The Singularity Is Near

next life
By Renato Baserga
well narrated by the expert in the field. It is a fascinating story, and actually Venter underplays it as he does not delve into the multiple applications that can be derived from "new" cells. I am sure he is aware of what can be done with new cells, but somehow he does not spell it out, leaving it mostly to the reader's imagination. But Venter has been the first in other things, and it does not surprise me that he wanted to the first in replacing a "useless" nucleus with one made to order. Good luck to him; he deserves it.

DNA "The Digital Concept"
By Rick B
Another Home run by J. Craig Venter. Science on the edge of our understanding, History the way it should be told, and a future of creation that we will witness in our life times. Read this book, and open your mind to the possibilities and it's realities. The author is not just telling a story, he is telling his story of his life's pursuit of what most considered impossible at the time. For those who have not read his prior book, "Cracking the Genome" Mr. Venter has been and continues to be one of the few people on the planet that has discovered all the genes in our and other species. He is the primary reason that in in the spring of 2000 that President Clinton could make the public announcement that our Human genome had been sequenced nearly 5 years ahead of schedule. I highly recommend both of these books.

Ventor and other real scientists should write more for intelligent citizens who wish be informed
By Joseph Mcdermott
J. Craig Ventor is without doubt a genius of DNA and molecular biology. He revolutionized the field of DNA sequencing.
The book contains much interesting information, but his authoring skills do not match his science. In particular the book is not always well organized. It should also be 100 pages longer. Dr. Venter has many interesting, even startling, observations but leaves us thirsty for more details. For these reasons I only give it 3 stars for style.

Now for the other side. If he writes a sequel, I will buy it. Regrettably popular science writing has declined into junk headlines and trivia. It is very hard for non-experts to find out what is going on in this and other vital fields. Dr. Ventor and other real scientists should write more for intelligent citizens who wish be informed. 5 stars for his effort.

Review

“Neurosurgery has met its Boswell in Henry Marsh. Painfully honest about the mistakes that can 'wreck' a brain, exquisitely attuned to the tense and transient bond between doctor and patient, and hilariously impatient of hospital management, Marsh draws us deep into medicine's most difficult art and lifts our spirits. It's a superb achievement.” ―Ian McEwan

“His love for brain surgery and his patients shines through, but the specialty--shrouded in secrecy and mystique when he entered it--has now firmly had the rug pulled out from under it. We should thank Henry Marsh for that.” ―The Times

“When a book opens like this: ‘I often have to cut into the brain and it is something I hate doing' – you can't let it go, you have to read on, don't you? Brain surgery, that's the most remote thing for me, I don't know anything about it, and as it is with everything I'm ignorant of, I trust completely the skills of those who practice it, and tend to forget the human element, which is failures, misunderstandings, mistakes, luck and bad luck, but also the non-professional, everyday life that they have. Do No Harm: Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery by Henry Marsh reveals all of this, in the midst of life-threatening situations, and that's one reason to read it; true honesty in an unexpected place. But there are plenty of others – for instance, the mechanical, material side of being, that we also are wire and strings that can be fixed, not unlike cars and washing machines, really.” ―Karl Ove Knausgaard, Financial Times

“"Do No Harm is a penetrating, in-the-trenches look at the life of a modern day neurosurgeon. With rare and unflinching honesty, Henry Marsh describes not only the soaring triumphs but the shattering tragedies that are so much a part of every surgeon's life. A remarkable achievement."” ―Michael J. Collins, author of Hot Lights, Cold Steel

“A soul-baring account of a practical-minded neurosurgeon who does not suffer fools or believe in souls, who favors ‘statistical outlier' over ‘miracle,' and who admits that a surgeon's ultimate achievement is marked by patients who ‘recover completely and forget us completely.' Readers, however, will not soon forget Dr. Marsh.” ―Katrina Firlik, author of Another Day in the Frontal Lobe: A Brain Surgeon Exposes Life on the Inside

“"Do No Harm is a fascinating look into the reality of life as a neurosurgeon. The personal patient stories are gripping, providing the public with an incredibly candid look into the imperfections and perfections of a dedicated neurosurgeon. In Do No Harm, Dr. Marsh takes the reader into deep into a world of life, death, and everything in between. Despite it all, Dr. Marsh's commitment to his patients and his profession never wavers. You will not be able to put this book down."” ―Paul Ruggieri M.D., surgeon and author of Confessions of a Surgeon and The Cost of Cutting

“"Do No Harm dares to reveal the raw and tender humanity behind brain surgery. Each story invites readers into the private thoughts of a neurosurgeon and astonishes them with the counterintuitive compassion required in the operating room."” ―Michael Paul Mason, author of Head Cases

“"Henry Marsh peels back the meninges to reveal the glistening, harrowing, and utterly compelling world of neurosurgery. Top-notch medical writing." --Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD, author of What Doctors Feel: How Emotions Affect the Practice of Medicine "The outstanding feature of Do No Harm is the author's completely candid description of the highs and lows of a neurosurgical career. … For its unusual and admirable candor, wisdom and humor, Do No Harm is a smashing good read from which the most experienced and the most junior neurosurgeons have much to learn." ” ―AANS Neurosurgeon

“This thoughtful doctor provides a highly personal and fascinating look inside the elite world of neurosurgery, appraising both its amazing successes as well as its sobering failures.” ―Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

“Like the work of his fellow physicians Jerome Groopman and Atul Gawande, Do No Harm offers insight into the life of doctors and the quandaries they face as we throw our outsize hopes into their fallible hands.” ―The Washington Post

“Riveting. ... [Marsh] gives us an extraordinarily intimate, compassionate and sometimes frightening understanding of his vocation.” ―The New York Times

“The Knausgaard of neurosurgery. ... Marsh writes like a novelist.” ―The New Yorker

“A surprising page-turner, Do No Harm is British neurosurgeon Henry Marsh's mesmerizing memoir of his career highlights and low points, a fascinating blend of derring-do and humble pie. ... Marsh's prose is elegant and seasoned, with no false bravado. ... Marsh's gift for words helps him share his sense of wonder with his readers.” ―Seattle Times

“There's no denying the vicarious thrill of peeking over a neurosurgeon's shoulder in the operating theater, and Dr. Marsh delivers plenty of hospital drama. Yet what sticks with you are the moments when the lens flips and the field of view widens, and you realize that, in learning about the minutiae of neurosurgery, you're gaining insight into life itself.” ―The Wall Street Journal

“One of the best books ever about a life in medicine, Do No Harm boldly and gracefully exposes the vulnerability and painful privilege of being a physician.” ―Booklist (starred review)

Most neurosurgeon’s lives are punctuated by periods of deep despair
By BrianB
This book is well written, gripping, and fascinating. Sometimes it is sad or gruesome. It is accurate in the descriptions of medical details, surgical procedures, and the life of brain surgeons. If you like to think of your physician as a demi-god you should not read this book. If you can handle the truth, read on.

As an anesthesiologist, I read with a mix of amusement and rueful resignation. Dr. Marsh is a true representative of his species, the neurosurgeon. They are by turns kind, irritating, cocky, courageous, arrogant, brilliant, obsessive, awe-inspiring, and lonely. They usually graduated at the top of their medical school class. Their residency did not end until they were well into their 30’s. Many hospitals have lots of pediatricians, intensivists, internists, and hospitalists, but they only have one neurosurgeon. Even in a field of doctors, a collection of brainy nerds, they stand alone.

Their arrogance is undeniable. Henry Marsh relates how he was stuck in a line of shoppers at the grocery store and thinks with irritation that none of them could do what he just did today, so why does he have to wait behind them? Like fighter pilots or Special Forces, society is not comfortable with such people, but when we need them, we need them desperately. And we always need them.

There is a moment before every invasive medical procedure when you could pause and contemplate the enormous consequences of failure. If you spend too much time doing that, you will end up paralyzed, and the patient will suffer. If you spend too much time thinking about the appalling human carnage that will result from surgery gone wrong, you will never take up the knife. No matter how skillful, knowledgeable, and careful you are, there will be carnage. No one knows this better than the neurosurgeon. To cut into a human brain takes enormous hubris. Every procedure includes the risk of death, but there are worse things than death. Most doctors will see worse-than-death only rarely during their career, but the neurosurgeon sees it often. It is the nature of their specialty. It is beyond extreme. For example, I induce a death-like coma in my patients daily, then rescue them from it. Yet I could not abide such a life of enormous risk.

Dr. Marsh is a writer of depth and skill. He probably does everything well, if he does it at all. If you think that neurosurgery is fascinating, you should read this book.

Fascinating, captivating, and not too anatomically dense. Easy read for the curious.
By Kyle William
Why you'll love this book:

Dr. Henry Marsh does a terrific job of tackling incredibly dense subjects (neuroscience/neurosurgery) and structuring his memoir in incredibly intriguing, elegant, and fascinating ways. Out of curiosity, I've tried to tackle books that explain the brain and its operations in the past, only to become overwhelmed by the complexity of the anatomical references. Perhaps because these are written by academics, I've yet to finish a book. It is important to remember that Dr. Marsh is a surgeon and thus has a history of explaining these complexities to patients and those with less expertise in the field. This allows him to draft a splendid memoir of mistakes, loss, triumphs, etc. from his career. In my favorite passage, Dr. Marsh explains a typical aneurism procedure with such beautiful allegory of a knight in shining armor darting through the sections of the brain off on a hunt for a mythical beast.

Why You Won't Love This Book:
There is a bit of detail when it comes to the surgical procedures that may make those with a weak stomach squirm. There is undoubtably stories of loss of life that are quite tragic as well. I also want to point out that this book is a memoir at heart and doesn't really leave the reader with any sort of leadership learnings.

It Is Brain Surgery
By V. coppola
Want to break through the blood/brain barrier? Grab a copy of "Do No Harm: Stories of Life, Death and Brain Surgery,"
Written by the crustiest, crankiest, most brilliant British surgeon imaginable, Dr. Henry Marsh. He takes you inside the human brain both physically and intellectually, through a 40-year series of insanely complex and riveting microsurgeries (usually Marsh battling from his Star Wars-style deck to circumvent some overwhelmingly horrible cancer, infection, stroke or hemorrhage). The language is simple and utterly revealing; the parade of souls who parade through his theater (his own mother among them) heartbreaking; the complexities of human consciousness (and the loss of it) laid bare. This goddam book is so compelling I was forced to dump my two month-long obsession with Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole thrillers to plunge in.

Capitalism and Perpetual Adolescence: Essays and Lectures of George S. Becker: Edited

What is thinking but the courage to work alone developing concepts that are lasting because they grow out of a living relationship to a subject matter. Academic fashions come and go while the thought of the social anthropologist George Becker remains the contemporary of the future. Here assembled by his student and friend, the psychiatrist Jon Lewis, some of the essential papers unpublished in Becker's lifetime. The range is great: from Female Delinquency to Jonestown. The depth is compelling. The critique of other thinkers in the field are incisive. And a final virtue: the style is clear, without the need for scholarly obfuscations. Walter A Davis, Professor of English Emeritus, Ohio State University. Author of “Death's Dream Kingdom”, “Deracination” and “Inwardness and Existence”.

Wonderfully eclectic and thought provoking.
By Amazon Customer
This is a wonderfully eclectic book of essays and excerpts written by a remarkable intellectual of the mid to late twentieth century. George Becker was an anthropologist, psychologist, psychotherapist, sociologist and political theorist. His learning was wide and his insights are deep. The book takes you back to major intellectual disputes of his time that still resonate and have relevance today. The book's central theme of "perpetual adolescence" rings truer in the present political climate in the United States than ever before. Dr. Jonathan Lewis has done an excellent job in compiling this book.
