Author has limited writing skills affecting the legitimacy of this book

This book is not very well written. There are so many typographical errors and grammatical errors that it is actually difficult to read at times. The author is giving her personal opinion, as authors do, yet there could be some actual research attached, even using collaborative opinion from peers to validate her opinions. Nevertheless, the author does use some relevent Biblical data to corroborate her argument, (by the way, the word Bible IS always captialized, Ms. Beerwald). Clearly this author has very limited writing skills and less education in research but I will commend her in taking the initiative to make an attempt.

The subject is not enterely developed.
Nothing is said about the thermoregulatory function. It has poor illustrations. I actually gave the book back. It is too expensive to keep.

A great book by a man who devoted his life to the microscopic study of the largest organ. A must read for those interested in the integument and its appendices.

This book is terrible. Don't waste your money

This book is terrible. Don't waste your money. Poorly edited and replete with typos. The book itself doesn't actually give a quick start introduction to anything except the basic idea behind Agile project management (which, I might add, you could easily discover on your own through a Google search) and then it proceeds to repeat the same generalized information for about 100 pages. You will certainly not walk away "mastering" anything after reading this book. There are no concrete steps or examples that one might use to actually understand how to implement Agile methodology. You'll read through MANY bulleted lists of concepts that would be very helpful to learn more about but, sadly, you never do! A more fitting title for this book would be "A quick overview of Agile principles, how they might be applied to other industries, and basic info about the taking the certification exam." Submitting for a refund ASAP.

Waste of your money

This book tells you nothing about the details of Agile or how to actually use Agile Project Management. It is 80pgs of why to use Agile and how it differs from traditional project management. This isnt even a short version of how to use it. The book is basically a waste. Do not waste your money on it. It is just an advertisement to take a course. I can't believe anyone gave it more than a star or two. Any 5 star rating is a scam by the author. Seriously.

This is by far the WORST reference book I have ever read in my professional career. If you want to get an introduction to agile project management or know how to start an agile project management, this is NOT THE BOOK FOR YOU. If you wonder if there are any benefits to agile, vs. water fall, project management, don't mind reading a very poorly written and poorly organized book, and have some money you need to throw away, you may consider this book.
The book is a collection of random thoughts written by a person who may have been part of an agile project team. The contents of the chapters and sections do not match the chapter title or the section heading. The book is filled with grammatic mistakes. It surprises me that the publisher did not proofread the book before printing.

Kazuko Kuramoto was born and raised in Dairen, Manchuria, in 1927, at the peak of Japanese expansionism in Asia. Dairen (Port Arthur) was an important colonial outpost on the Liaotung Peninsula; the train lines established by Russia and taken over by the Japanese, ended there. When Kuramoto's grandfather arrived in Dairen as a member of the Japanese police force shortly after the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, the family's belief in Japanese supremacy and its "divine" mission to "save" Asia from Western imperialists was firmly in place. As a third-generation colonist, the seventeen-year-old Kuramoto readily joined the Red Cross Nurse Corps in 1944 to aid in the war effort and in her country's sacred cause. A year later, her family listened to the emperor's radio broadcast ". . . we shall have to endure the unendurable, to suffer the insufferable . . . unconditional surrender."

Manchurian Legacy is the story of the family's life in Dairen, their survival as a forgotten people during the battle to reclaim Manchuria waged by Russia, China, and Korea, and their subsequent repatriation to a devastated Japan. Kuramoto describes a culture based on the unthinking oppression of the colonized by the colonizer. And, because Manchuria was, in essence, a Japanese frontier, the Kuramotos lived a freer and more luxurious life than they would have in Japan-one relatively unscathed by the war until after the surrender.

As a commentator Kuramoto explores her culture both from the inside, subjectively, and from the outside, objectively. Her memoirs describe her coming of age in a colonial society, her family's experiences in war-torn Manchuria, and her "homecoming" to Japan-where she had never been-just as Japan is engaged in its own cultural upheaval.

A precious memoir, recording the end of an era.

As a native Dalianian, when I heard of this book, I felt this is the one I have long been looking for, the real story about my hometown.
Born in one of its suburban counties, I moved to the City of Dalian at the age of eight in the 70's, though had travelled through it on my way to Beijing every year before. It's a unique city, different from any other one in China. Its European style architectures, its numerous public plazas, connected by tree-lined boulevards, all are such a contrast with a typical Chinese city, whether it's Shanghai, Beijing, or Canton. And the aroma of acacia filled the streets in early summer.
Why is it so different. It's all owing to its colonial past. However, the Japanese colonists, who were central to its birth and rise, by then were all long gone. In the school, what we learned were just how bad Japanese colonists were. The official narratives were, they were all beasts and criminals, greedy rapists, and only after they were rid of the city got its life. However, little by little, I found out it's not the whole story, not even twenty percent true.
This memoir, from a young Japanese Dalian native's perspective, recorded her last three years in Dalian. The end of the war, the Soviet invasion, the chaos, the famine, the struggle to survive and final repatriation, or rather the exile, to Japan. This book might be the first in its kind. With the old Japanese Dairenians diminishing every day, and this part of history still a taboo in China, and forgotten in the West, this may well be the last.
I do recommend my fellow Dalianians to read this book, to learn about our hometown's real story, not be blinded by the ultra-nationalism which dominates people's mindset in China.
On the other hand, I do wish the author could have provided more details, especially on the interactions between different ethnic groups in the city.

Intelligent, moving memoir full of history

The life and times of Manchuria and Japan from the pre-war to post-war eras are made physically and emotionally real in one person's memory of life and love and loss. This book is not a literary masterpiece but as a memoir, a history, and a slice of human experience it is strikingly good. At its best, Ms. Kuramoto's book is similar to or even better than "Gone With the Wind" as a tale of a uniquely determined woman survivor on the defeated and wrong side of a war, in this case World War II. But in Ms. Kuramoto's case, it is also of someone who is more aware than were the real Margaret Mitchell and her fictional heroine Scarlett O'Hara that her own side was that of an oppressor. And even at its worst, the book still holds up at a level equal to penetrating journalism and biography.

Criticisms and weaknesses: I am perhaps overemphasizing the downside at this point to detail some issues that a reader may find off-putting or disappointing. For example many interesting details from the author's childhood (e.g., interest in ballet, episodes in school) are only told after she is an adult and while she is remembering them during her adult period instead of giving us a full picture of them during the childhood part of her story. There is also not a lot of interpersonal dramatic tension in the narrative's style even though after she settles in Japan following the family's expulsion from Manchuria she faces social and economic deprivation, deep moral compromises, tense reunions, family alienation, bigotry, and abusive personalities. The story is a little too blandly told just at the point we can really get a "Gone With the Wind" sweep. There are also minor odd turns of phrase that sound like leftovers from English as a second (actually third for the author) language, or are simply bad edits. In general, though, her use of language -- English -- is mostly clear and compelling.)

Finally, on the more profound downside is a recurring sense that despite her intellectual realization of Japan's abusive rule in China (of which her father was a part despite being a decent and kind person in his own sphere, and respectful of the local Chinese), nevertheless the author did and does emotionally look down on the Chinese, and deeply resents their takeover of the place of her idyllic childhood. To a degree some of that emotion is understandable because expelling the Japanese of Manchuria, innocent and guilty, young and old, native and colonist may have amounted to one revenge too far. And worse, the direct terror and violence the Japanese settlers experienced from the newly liberated Chinese - and the author's family especially - was quite brutal. ("Colonist" in the title may contain a bit of willful irony as Manchuria was her only known home.)

The sense of a continued anger and even condescension towards the Chinese from the author is supported in an episode just before she and her family leave Manchuria In that episode, the author's anger causes her to snarl contemptuously at a Chinese customer to the point that he in turn unjustifiedly slaps her, while somewhat justifiably also calling her a Japanese snob b*tch. Her narrative shows no regret then or now at her own admitted provocative rudeness. Also, interestingly, she never apparently has tried to go back to the hometown of Dairen in Manchuria though the doors have been wide open for decades.

The above critical thoughts are ponderings that arise from the fact that this book is a profound and eminently readable one that makes you think and feel and learn, and do not detract from the book's powerful value as a collection of eye-opening and historically important memories.

Ms. Kuramoto's memoir should be assigned in schools in subject areas ranging from literature to history to anthropology/sociology. It also should be read by anyone looking to capture, and be captured by, the different experiences of human lives throughout this world, today and yesterday.

point of view of a Chinese raised in Hong Kong

How you react to this book depends on your ethnic background. I am a Chinese born during the Sino-Japanese war. My parents and their generation suffered immensely from the war, and some of them were burnt by personal experience under the Japanese occupation. There is a general anti-Japanese sentiment among them, which is being transmitted to the later generations. The current generation of Chinese are also greatly influenced by the anti-Japenese propaganda which are being viewed everyday in movies and TV series. In all these media, Chinese were depicted as courageous victims, and Japanese as brutal and somewhat inefficient invaders. This book allows us to see the world again from a different perspective. The author was one of the colonists in Japan-occupied Manchuria. She viewed Manchuko as much as a British would view Hong Kong at the height of the colony under British occupation. Just as the British at that time, she would view the Japanese occupiers as benefactors to the backward society of their Chinese citizens, upgrading their standard of living as well as education. This book is especially moving because the author also describes in very personal terms the changes of her feelings during the collapse of the Japanese empire, and her exodus to the U.S. She reminds us that each of us is an individual first, a nationalist second. This book would benefit all those who view themselves as being benevolent occupiers, as well as all those who consider themselves suffering from foreign intrusions.

About the Author
Judith Haber, PhD, APRN, CS, FAAN, is a family therapist in private practice in Stamford, CT and Professor and Director of the Master's and Post-Master's Certificate Programs in the Division of Nursing at New York University. She is also a founding partner in a professional image consulting firm, Image Care Associates. Dr. Haber was formerly Professor and Director of the Department of Nursing at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Riverdale, New York.

Dr. Haber earned her baccalaureate degree in nursing, cum laude, from Adelphi University and her master's and doctoral degrees from New York University. She earned a Certificate of Advanced Achievement in Family Therapy from the Center for Family Learning, New Rochelle, New York and is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Clinical Specialist in Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing.

Dr. Haber is internationally recognized as a clinician and educator in psychiatric-mental health nursing. She has received two AJN Book of the Year awards for her classic textbook "Comprehensive Psychiatric Nursing", recently published in its 5th edition and translated into Spanish and French. Dr. Haber is also co-editor of "Nursing Research: Methods, Critical Appraisal and Utilization", now in its 4th edition, translated into German and Italian, and recipient of a 1994 AJN Book of the Year Award.

The prevailing writing style in this book was way too wordy. I felt like the information that was imparted could have been adequately covered in a pamphlet of 40 pages. It was a painful read.

Hard to get through

Not enough examples to clarify the concepts (examples given are not creative enough to enhance understanding if its a concept that reader is completely unfamiliar with), uses the vocab word in the definition (for example, it's like saying: definition means to define a concept)

Worst written textbook EVER

Worst written textbook EVER! I agree with the other reviewer about the book being too wordy. My classmates and I are convinced the authors had a minimum number of words required by the editors. I found myself googling to get clarification on the concepts because the text book is so convoluted in its descriptions. I'm sure there isn't a big market for nursing research textbooks, which is why we get stuck using this one. Don't waste your money renting/buying this. Using the internet will serve you MUCH better.

Inspiring collection of personal triumphs

I love stories of people who've gone from nothing to something and this collection puts a smile on my face every time I read one. The stories really motivate you to stay positive and work hard to get what you want out of life. The names are familiar, but their stories weren't, at least not to me. I knew about Arnold Schwarzenegger's background, but the stories about others, like Jerry Seinfield and Ellen DeGeneres, were new to me. Seeing Seinfield now, I just can't imagine him choking on stage like he did with his first stand up attempt. I would have probably quit but he never gave up. That's the theme of all the stories really. Never give up.

It's so easy to see people on TV or in movies and think oh well they've got it easy, they're rich and successful. But when I read their stories I realize they started out the same as I did, sometimes a lot worse off even. It's such an inspiring collection of personal triumphs, really enjoyed reading it!

This book is full of inspiration gems!

Knowing the stories of great people from all walks of life is an effective way for one to learn different lessons in life. This is my main conclusion after reading this book. I cannot pinpoint what are the most important lessons I learned since it seemed that each story is unique from each other.

This book, as the subtitle states, is a collection of stories of different people. When this was offered to me by Jason, the author, I asked myself what are the possible lessons I can get from the people featured here. I had a bias towards famous business persons, statesmen; those people who are usually featured in biography books or who have their memoir. So when I read that there are people from entertainment industry, I was intrigued. I asked what could I get from them aside from seeing them show their skills in movies.

It turns that I learned a lot and was inspired by their stories. Now I will not look at the likes of Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ellen DeGeneres the same way I look at them in entertainment roles. Now I see them as people who have faced their problems with tenacity and relentless pursuit to attain their goals despite the many setbacks they encounter. All of these because of this book.

Moreover, this book, short as it may seemed based on the number of its pages, is full of inspiration. It is like a healthy salad full of nutrients in every bite you take.

I recommend that you read this book. It is short enough to finish but long enough to keep you inspired.

About the Author

She is the sister of literary icon Chris McCandless and consulted closely with Jon Krakauer on his bestselling book Into the Wild. She also worked as a direct advisor and script contributor to Sean Penn for his film adaptation of the book. She lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia with her two daughters.

Interesting insight from the front lines

Although the writing is clunky and at times overwrought, the central purpose of this book is the much-needed insight into the incredibly damaging environment in which the 2 youngest McCandless kids were raised. I think the abusive environment made it very easy for Chris to cut off all contact in an attempt to define himself as a man separate from Walt. He did the extraordinary (abandoning his formerly materially-comfortable life for a meagre existence) because he was from an extra-ordinary situation. The very foundation of the second McCandless family was built on a lie, and that which is a lie cannot stand, it may take a few decades but it will fall. The core of the second family, which was Chris and Carine, seem more damaged than the first family (the other 6 kids) probably because of the persistently detrimental effects of living full time with two incredibly personality-disordered people. We don’t get much insight into the other mother, but it seems the very act of separating from Walt and claiming her own life and dignity back made a huge difference on the older kids. They all seem to be successful and ‘normal’ in a way that Chris and Carine are not. Perhaps their mother was not as nuts. Walt and Billie were so wrapped up in themselves and their dynamic drama that real parenting seemed to take a back seat. What little energy was left after trying to kill each other or the kids was spent on their careers and ‘looking good’ to the community. They are almost textbook narcissists.
Carine is not the easiest person to like; there are shades of her mother’s willfulness and self-righteousness in her actions, and she can seem more self-absorbed than self-reflective. Because she and Chris lost contact just at the point his story gets interesting, she can offer little insight into the man he was becoming, she can only reveal the boy he was.

A Very Sad Story

I have mixed feelings about The Wild Truth. It starts off with a bang. Right away, she's at her childhood home and declares, "I f$&#* hate this house." And I thought, "OK, we're in for some raw, unbridled honesty here." But that kind of forthright bluntness becomes muted as she takes on a more formal tone, in an attempt to write "literary."

Carine has my sympathy. Her life hasn't been easy and to live with constant reminder's of her brother's legacy and tragic end has got to be painful. But I wished the book would've kept its focus on Chris. This book is really about Carine's journey, her relationship with her parents, Chris, her siblings and her ex-lovers. She spends a great deal of time uncomfortably justifying and defending her own life and legacy, as she continually pats herself on the back or holds herself up as a pillar for us all to emulate. She just skirts the edges of sanctimony, never quite going over the edge. The writing is clunky, phrases such as "email missives" when just "email" would've worked are peppered throughout the book. I found myself skimming whole passages where she went into great detail about something like her daughter playing with, uh, a ribbon, I think, I don't know, I checked out at that part.

What really redeemed the book, for me, was strictly personal. There were scenes and recountings of conversations with Walt and Billie that were note-for-note perfect for ones I experienced with my own family that made me gasp. Plus, I've been fascinated by Chris' story for years, as I've felt he's a kindred spirit. I, too, have wandered around in nature, alone, searching, drinking in the peace.

I think this book will be interesting to anyone who has survived an abusive childhood or to those who are Christopher McCandless completists. Don't expect to be spellbound or to be absorbed in a book of great literary merit. Don't expect to learn too much about Chris' story, either. Take it for what it is: A very sad story told by a woman who has survived hardship and who seems to still be coming to terms with it all.

The rest of the story.

I read Into The Wild years ago and was blown away by the story. In 2011, I accepted a summer job in Denali and heard several times about the magic bus that coworkers would hike out to for overnight camping. In the stories, I heard negative comments about Chris McCandless, that he didn't know what he was doing. I never made the hike to the bus and deep down always wondered what really happened. Finding The Wild Truth, I picked it up and never stopped reading.
No longer a mystery, the back story has been shared, gut wrenching and honest, Carine shares the truth about the 'perfect' family. Thank you for sharing The Wild Truth
