When Elizabeth Endicott arrives in Aleppo, Syria, she has a diploma from Mount Holyoke, a crash course in nursing, and only the most basic grasp of the Armenian language. It’s 1915, and Elizabeth has volunteered to help deliver food and medical aid to refugees of the Armenian Genocide during the First World War. There she meets Armen, a young Armenian engineer who has already lost his wife and infant daughter. After leaving Aleppo and traveling into Egypt to join the British Army, he begins to write Elizabeth letters, realizing that he has fallen in love with the wealthy young American.

Years later, their American granddaughter, Laura, embarks on a journey back through her family’s history, uncovering a story of love, loss—and a wrenching secret that has been buried for generations.

Review
“A deeply moving story of survival and enduring love.” —USA Today

“Bohjalian deftly weaves the many threads of this story back and forth, from past to present, from abuse to humanity, from devastation to redemption. . . . Utterly riveting.” —The Washington Post

“Chris Bohjalian is at his very finest in this searing story of love and war. I was mesmerized from page one. Bravo!” —Paula McLain, author of The Paris Wife

“Bohjalian—the grandson of Armenian survivors—pours passion, pride, and sadness into his tale of ethnic destruction and endurance.” —Entertainment Weekly

“Dead-solid perfect. Bohjalian is a literary novelist unafraid to reference Proust's madeleine and expect readers to get it. But his books are also filled with artfully drawn characters and great, passionate storytelling. The Sandcastle Girls is all that, but different, more powerful.” —The Seattle Times

“In his latest novel, master storyteller Chris Bohjalian explores the ways in which our ancestral past informs our contemporary lives—in ways we understand and ways that remain mysteriously out of reach. The Sandcastle Girls is deft, layered, eye-opening, and riveting. I was deeply moved.” —Wally Lamb, author of The Hour I First Believed

“A searing, tightly woven tale of war and the legacy it leaves behind. . . . A nuanced, sophisticated portrayal of what it means not only to endure, but to insist on hope.” —Oprah.com

“It takes a talented novelist to combine fully ripened characters, an engrossing storyline, exquisite prose and set it against a horrific historical backdrop—in this case, the Armenian Genocide—and completely enchant readers. The prolific and captivating Chris Bohjalian has done it all with The Sandcastle Girls.” —Associated Press

“The scope of The Sandcastle Girls is almost epic. . . . While there are the rich personal stories that his readers connect to, what he has achieved is much larger. Bohjalian has written a compelling and powerful novel that will bring the history of the genocide to a wide audience. The Sandcastle Girls will remain ingrained in your consciousness.” —The Armenian Weekly

“[A] great read. . . . Affecting.” —People

"This book is a masterfully written story of war and love and is especially meaningful as we approach the centennial observance of the 1915 Armenian genocide." —Louisville Courier-Journal

“A compelling new novel that is part love story, part history lesson. . . . An eye-opening tale of longing and discovery. . . . A bittersweet reflection on hope even in the darkest circumstances. . . . [The Sandcastle Girls] is about the ways the past informs the present, about the pain but also the richness of heritage.” —The Miami Herald

“Bohjalian succeeds in depicting the horror, without sentimentalizing it. . . . He has fulfilled the duty of anyone seeking to document a genocide—he ensures that we don’t look away.” —The Boston Globe

“An unforgettable exposition of the still too-little-known facts of the Armenian genocide and its multigenerational consequences.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Touching and believable, adding a softer dimension to what is at times a brutal story.” —The Vancouver Sun

“Bohjalian powerfully narrates an intricately nuanced romance with a complicated historical event at the forefront. With the centennial of the Armenian genocide fast approaching, this is not to be missed. Simply astounding.” —Library Journal (starred review)

“A beautiful, frightening, and unforgettable read.” —Publishers Weekly

“[Bohjalian’s] characters are as real as our own relatives. The well-researched history that forms the background informs, intrigues, and enchants—even as recollections of horror mount.” —The Florida Times-Union

"A tender love story." —The Plain Dealer

“Remarkably supple. . . . Bohjalian keeps his eyes on the personal, the little moments that illuminate broader social movements. . . . Moment by moment, and passage by passage, the novel lights up a disturbing period of history.” —The Columbus Dispatch

“So poignant. . . . Passion comes through clearly in The Sandcastle Girls, with Bohjalian’s carefully chosen words, his flesh and blood characters, and his vivid descriptions. . . . It is a story of death and the triumph of life and quite possibly the best thing Bohjalian has written.” —The Salisbury Post

"I was completely mesmerized by The Sandcastle Girls. Bohjalian pulls his readers into this fictional yet historical setting by educating, entertaining and enthralling them with beautifully written prose. . . . Truly enchanting.” —The Times Record News

“Sober, elegiac, and respectful. It’s not for the Lauras to capture the agony of those who perished, but they can, in small ways, show how human dignity reasserted itself in the face of unthinkable breaches of the social contract. At the opening of the novel, Laura reflects that Americans could benefit from a book called The Armenian Genocide for Dummies. Indeed, many of us could—but a fiction like Bohjalian’s, with its power to reach legions of readers, may be far more valuable.” —Seven Days

“So filled is it with the suspense of life and death that The Sandcastle Girls is difficult to categorize. The story is fiction, but it is true. It’s history, but it’s also art.” —The Weekly Standard

“[A] moving multi-generational saga. . . . A sober, elegiac, and touching novel.” —Bookreporter

"A romance so beautiful and believable it hurts.” —The Free Lance-Star (Fredericksburg, VA)

Chapter 1

The young woman, twenty-one, walks gingerly down the dusty street between her father and the American consul here in Aleppo, an energetic fellow almost her father’s age named Ryan Donald Martin, and draws the scarf over her hair and her cheeks. The men are detouring around the square near the base of the citadel because they don’t yet want her to see the deportees who arrived here last night--there will be time for that soon enough--but she fears she is going to be sick anyway. The smell of rotting flesh, excrement, and the July heat are conspiring to churn her stomach far worse than even the trip across the Atlantic had weeks earlier. She feels clammy and weak-kneed and reaches out for her father’s elbow to steady herself. Her father, in turn, gently taps her fingers with his hand, his vague and abstracted attempt at a comforting gesture.

“Miss Endicott, do you need to rest? You look a little peaked,” the consul says, and she glances at him. His brown eyes are wide and a little crazed, and already there are thin rivulets of sweat running down both sides of his face. He is wearing a beige linen jacket, which she imagines to be infinitely more comfortable than her father’s gray woolen suit. She brings her free hand to her own face and feels the moisture there. She nods in response to his question; she does need to sit, though it embarrasses her to admit this. Still, it may be a nonissue. She can’t see where she might on this squalid street. But Ryan quickly takes her arm and guides her from her father, leading her to a stoop on the shady side of the thin road. He wipes off the squat step with his bare hand. There is a ramshackle wooden door behind the stoop, shut tight against the midmorning heat, but she presumes that whoever lives there won’t mind if she sits. And so there she rests and breathes in deeply and slowly through her mouth, watching the women in their headscarves and long, loose robes--some hide all but their eyes behind burqas--and the men in their ornate blazers, their voluminous, shapeless trousers, and their flowerpot-like fez hats. Some of the men glance at her sympathetically as they pass, others with a brazen want in their eyes. She has been warned.

“There’s a nice breeze today,” Ryan says cheerfully, and while she appreciates the slightly cooler air, wafting along with it is the stench from the square. “Before you arrived, the heat was just unbearable.”

She can’t imagine it being hotter. At the moment, she can’t imagine anywhere being hotter. And yet she found their apartment last night unexpectedly comfortable after the endless weeks aboard a ship, then a horse-drawn carriage, and finally two train cars that boasted only wooden seats. It was warm, but she had stood at her window for nearly half an hour in the middle of the night, gazing out at the row of statuesque cypress on the hill beyond the American compound and the bower of trees just inside the walls. She saw more stars than she ever saw in Boston, and the half moon seemed to dangle eerily, beautifully close to the earth.

Her father is surveying the rows of sand-colored two-story buildings that curl toward an alley, his arms folded across his chest, his face stern, and then she notes him arch his back suddenly and stand up a little straighter. Ryan sees what he sees and murmurs just loud enough for her to hear, “Oh, Jesus, no. Not more.” Both Ryan and her father glance down at her, but they realize there is absolutely nothing they can do; there is not a way in the world to shield her from what is coming. Besides, this is why she is here, isn’t it? Didn’t she volunteer to be a part of this aid mission? To chronicle what she sees for their organization, the Friends of Armenia, and to volunteer at the hospital--to do, in essence, whatever she could to help? Still, discomfort leaches from both men like perspiration, and she finds it interesting that they are as embarrassed as they are disgusted. If they had been here alone--if she had remained back at the American compound--her father and the American consul now would be experiencing only rage. And so she presses the palm of her hand against the wall of the house, the stone unexpectedly cool, and rises.

Approaching from down the street is a staggering column of old women, and she is surprised to observe they are African. She stares, transfixed. She thinks of the paintings and drawings she has seen of American slave markets in the South from the 1840s and 1850s, though weren’t those women and men always clothed--if only in rags? These women are completely naked, bare from their feet to the long drapes of matted black hair. And it is the hair, long and straight though filthy and impossibly tangled, that causes her to understand that these women are white--at least they were once--and they are, in fact, not old at all. Many might be her age or even a little younger. All are beyond modesty, beyond caring. Their skin has been seared black by the sun or stained by the soil in which they have slept or, in some cases, by great yawning scabs and wounds that are open and festering and, even at this distance, malodorous. The women look like dying wild animals as they lurch forward, some holding on to the walls of the stone houses to remain erect. She has never in her life seen people so thin and wonders how in the name of God their bony legs can support them. Their breasts are lost to their ribs. The bones of their hips protrude like baskets.

“Elizabeth, you don’t need to watch,” her father is saying, but she does. She does.

Herding the women forward through the town are half a dozen young men, two on horseback who look nearly as weak as the women, and four walking beside the group. All of them have rifles slung over their shoulders. They, too, don’t look any older than Elizabeth, and it crosses her mind that the pair nearest her can’t be more than fifteen or sixteen; their moustaches are wisps, a boy’s attempt to look like a man.

Just before the group reaches them, the gendarmes guide the women down the narrow street that will lead eventually to the square beneath the citadel, where they will be deposited with the deportees who arrived here yesterday. The men are short-tempered and tired. They strike the women when they move slowly or clumsily. They yank them back to their feet by their hair when they collapse. Elizabeth tries to count the women as they turn to the right and disappear into the alley, but reflexively she looks away whenever one of the skeletons meets her eye. Still, she guesses there are at least 125 of them. She verbalizes the number aloud without thinking.

“I assure you, Miss Endicott,” says Ryan, “when that group left Zeitun or Adana or wherever, there were at least a thousand of them.”

“Why did the Turks take their clothes?” she asks him.

He shakes his head. “They don’t usually--unless they’re planning to kill them. Sometimes they take the men’s clothes immediately before executing them; they worry the clothes of the dead are defiled. But I have no idea why they did in this case. Degrade the survivors, maybe. Perhaps increase the chances they’ll die on their own in the sun. But don’t look for reason in any of this.”

“And where are the men?”

He dabs at his forehead with a handkerchief. “It’s safe to assume they’re dead. Either they were--” He doesn’t finish because her father glares at the consul to be silent. To be still. Her father is hoping to introduce her to this world gradually. In increments. They discussed it little on either the ship or the train. Generalities of Ottoman history only.

Later this month, the two doctors in their party will arrive and they will start work. They--along with a returning missionary named Alicia Wells--telegrammed that their ship was going to be delayed leaving Boston, and might then take a more roundabout course to avoid U‑boats. But whether the physicians are delayed two weeks or three might make all the difference in the world for some of the survivors who are brought here. These women, she presumes, will be long gone by then, marched back into the desert to one of the resettlement camps to the southeast. So will the group that is already in the square, the women and children who staggered in from the desert yesterday.

In the meantime, Elizabeth can’t imagine what in the name of God she--what anyone--can do for them. Still, after catching her breath, she and her father and the American consul decide that instead of spending lunch discussing the conditions in Aleppo and planning for the arrival of the rest of their group, they will follow these woeful deportees down the alley and into the square, and there see what they can do to help.

Ryan Martin leaves to find rags for the women to wear, but by the time he returns with a wagon of tattered dresses and blouses--remnants from the dead who have passed through Aleppo that summer--the newly arrived deportees already have been clothed by the other refugees. In the meantime, Elizabeth and a nurse from the hospital pick at the vermin on the women and clean the gaping wounds on their legs and ankles and feet. They ration the little calamine lotion and olive oil they have for those women whose sunburns have not seared deep into their flesh, and gently wash the wounds of those whose skin--especially on their shoulders and backs--has peeled off like a snake’s. Within minutes they finish off the one large bottle of iodine the nurse has brought. Elizabeth gives the deportees water and bowls of thin bulgur soup to eat, because it is all they can scare up at the moment. There may be bread tomorrow. She feels helpless. When she was given her nursing training back in Boston, no one prepared her for dysentery. For gangrene. For feet with bones splintered from weeks of walking barefoot, the toes and heels swollen and mangled and deformed.

Most of the women are clustered underneath makeshift tents--canvas pulled tight on tottering wooden poles--but there are more women than there is room, so they spread out beyond the tent when the sun is no longer overhead and there are long stripes of comforting black shade. The children--among whom the only males in this new group can be found--remind her of dead sea horses she once saw on the beach at Cape Cod: The children, like the sea horses, are curled up on their sides and their bones seem as brittle and sharp as the shells of the dried pipefish. Perhaps a quarter mile away is a hospital, primitive by Boston standards, but a hospital nonetheless. It infuriates Elizabeth that there is, apparently, no room for these women there, and so far not a single doctor has emerged from the building and offered to help. Ryan has tried to mollify her by telling her that the vast majority of the beds there are filled with Armenian women and children, but this reality too has left her seething inside.

The number of deportees who speak either English or French surprises Elizabeth, though most are too tired right now to talk. Nevertheless, there is a woman who looks to be in her fifties but Elizabeth suspects is actually half that age, who murmurs “thank you” in English as she takes the bowl of soup and brings it to her lips.

“You’re welcome,” Elizabeth says. “I wish it were a more substantial meal.”

The woman shrugs. “You’re American,” she observes, a statement. She is wearing a man’s shirt and a skirt that balloons around her like a sack.

“Yes. My name is Elizabeth.”

“I’m Nevart,” the Armenian offers, and Elizabeth carefully rolls the name around in her mind. A small girl sleeps beside the woman, the child’s collarbone rising and falling ever so slightly with each breath. Elizabeth guesses that she is seven or eight. “Where in America?” Nevart asks.

“Boston,” Elizabeth answers. “It’s in the state of Massachusetts.” The woman’s nails are as brown as her skin. “Sip that soup slowly,” she adds.

Nevart nods and places the bowl in her lap. “I know where Boston is,” she says. “I heard you speaking Armenian a minute ago. How much do you know?”

“A little. Very little, actually. I know mostly vocabulary. I know words, not grammar.” Then Elizabeth asks the woman, “How did you learn English?”

“My husband went to college in London. He was a doctor.”

Elizabeth thinks about this, imagining this wraith of a woman living in England. As if Nevart can read her mind, the deportee continues, “I wasn’t with him most of the time. I have been to London, but only for a visit.” She sighs and looks into Elizabeth’s eyes. “I’m not going to die,” she murmurs, and she almost sounds disappointed.

“No, of course, you won’t. I know that.” Elizabeth hopes she sounds reassuring. She honestly isn’t sure whether this woman will live.

“You’re just saying that. But I know it because I was a doctor’s wife. I have survived dysentery. Starvation. Dehydration. They . . . never mind what they did to me. I am still alive.”

“Is that your little girl?” Elizabeth asks.

The woman shakes her head. “No,” she answers, gently massaging the child’s neck. “This is Hatoun. Like me, she is unkillable.”

Elizabeth wants to ask about the woman’s husband, but she doesn’t dare. The man is almost certainly dead. Likewise, she wonders if Nevart has lost her children as well, but again she knows no good can come from this inquiry. Wouldn’t the Armenian have said something about her own children if they were with her now--if they were alive?

Over the woman’s shoulder Elizabeth spies her father in the distance. He is ladling out the soup from a black cauldron and handing it to the women strong enough to stand and bring it to those who are collapsed under the tent. His sideburns and his beard, so much thicker and grayer than the thin whorls of cinnamon atop his scalp, look almost white in this light. They are expecting flour and sugar and tea in the next day or so--the first of two shipments they have arranged this month--though Ryan has warned her father and her that it is likely only a small fraction of what they have acquired will actually arrive in Aleppo.

“Where do we go next?” Nevart asks her. “They brought us here, but they won’t let us stay.”

The Slaughter You Know Nothing About
By Free2Read
Chris Bohjalian seeks out difficult subjects. His novels are unique. His novels are passionate. His novels make the horror of violence in the world a series of human interactions. He does not use gratuitous violence. Instead, he puts forth the truth, offsetting the sickening carnage with characters who are changed and strengthened by bearing witness to man's inhumanity to man.

In "The Sandcastle Girls," Bohjalian takes us to Aleppo in 1915. A young American, Elizabeth Endicott, has come to assist the Armenian League of America with the thousands of refugees pouring into Syria from the genocide in Turkey. The Armenians who arrive are nearly dead. Elizabeth possesses few practical skills, except that she can write a discrete report and she is capable of handling some nursing duties, not flinching at blood or bed pans.

Elizabeth lives somewhat isolated in the American compound. In the city, the orphanage houses wild children who feed off those younger and weaker. The town square fills with women who have walked, now naked, across the desert. They are to be "relocated." No one can be trusted. The officials who say they will help, the quiet readers on a train, the casual guard in the street--danger is everywhere.

From this mind-numbing situation, Elizabeth grows into a new woman. She finds a man she loves. She journeys into primitive conditions to try to help those taken to the desert to die of starvation and the lack of water. She makes a foray into becoming a maternal figure, sheltering one woman and one child from the chaos all around her.

As the narrator says in "The Sandcastle Girls," "How do a million and a half people die with nobody knowing? -- You kill them in the middle of nowhere."

The information above may turn some readers away as too much of a downer for a summer read, too horrible. Yet, you should trust Bohjalian. He tells this story in such a way that yes, the violence is there. The gruesome deaths of women, children, babies, and the men fighting in the Dardanelles are all described. But there is hope. There is goodness. There are spirits of strength and family, and above all love. If ever a story proves a theme, so "The Sandcastle Girls" tells us that loves does prevail. The first-person narrator, Laura Petrosian, is a modern girl, seeking to understand her heritage. That she can tell her own story of awakening as she interweaves the history of the Armenian genocide is an absolutely amazing feat of storytelling.

Hats off to Bohjalian for his courage and his adeptness with a large cast of characters and a complicated plot. "Sandcastle" in the title may lead to some sales as a beach read, but this is not a book to lie in the sun and laze away an afternoon. It is a book that will inflame you to get involved in bringing peace and justice to all people of the world. Bring history into the light. Do not let history repeat itself. Never again.

A personal and moving story
By Bookreporter
THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS, Chris Bohjalian's 15th novel, covers a different territory from most of his other books, which usually feature his home state of Vermont. This moving multi-generational saga of an Armenian family is set on multiple continents and encompasses a century of tumultuous change and upheaval both in the world at large and in the lives of its protagonists. Like Bohjalian's previous works, THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS features ordinary, relatable characters caught up in events beyond their control.

Laura Petrosian, an obvious stand-in for the author himself, is a successful fortysomething American novelist in search of her roots, in particular those of her ancestors who fled the Ottoman Empire during the Armenian Genocide at the hands of the Turks. The Armenians know this event as "Meds Yeghern," the Great Catastrophe. Laura's search is prompted by the discovery of a photograph of an emaciated woman in an exhibit of Armenian victims of the ethnic cleansing. She bears Laura's family name, so perhaps she is a relative of some sort. Laura, who has basically tolerated but has not embraced her grandfather's ethnic heritage thus far, is suddenly inspired to learn more about the events that shaped her Armenian ancestors' lives.

The novel travels back and forth in time between Laura's current-day search for her family's history and her American grandmother Elizabeth's introduction to Armenia nearly a century ago.

Twenty-one-year-old Elizabeth Endicott lands in Aleppo in what would become modern-day Syria in 1915 as World War I rages around the globe. She is freshly armed with a degree from Mt. Holyoke, a spattering of nursing know-how and a few words of Armenian and Turkish, and a naive optimism that she can do some good on behalf of the Boston-based organization, Friends of Armenia. Elizabeth and her wealthy banker father Silas are on a mission of mercy to aid Armenian Genocide victims, but neither of the Endicotts is fully prepared for the horrors they are about to witness: all the Armenian men have been killed by the Turks, and only emaciated women and children remain, to be force-marched to "refugee camps" in the sweltering Syrian desert where they are slowly and deliberately starved to death. Through the Endicotts, the reader is introduced to the full scope of the holocaust that butchered 1.5 million Armenian Christians --- three out of every four Armenians living at the time. This is an event in history that, although quite as brutal and horrific as the Jewish holocaust, has shockingly been mostly forgotten outside of the Armenian diaspora by now.

Soon after Elizabeth's arrival in Aleppo, she meets an enigmatic engineer by the name of Armen Petrosian. Elizabeth's time with Armen turns out to be fleeting as he soon escapes Aleppo to join the British Army's motley crew of Australian and Indian soldiers in the fight against the Turks. However, Armen finds himself compelled to write a series of letters to Elizabeth, who learns that he is fighting the Turks to avenge the deaths of his wife and baby daughter who were murdered in the ethnic cleansing. As the war engulfs the continent, Armen and Elizabeth come to realize their love for each other and are happily reunited.

However, even as Elizabeth prepares for her future with Armen, she discovers a tragic secret that she must take to the grave with her. Although the two lovers are able to create a new and comfortable life together in America, their marriage remains tinged with "sadness, secrets, and wistfulness" as seen through the eyes of their granddaughter Laura. Now Laura finally learns the family secret that has haunted her grandparents their entire lives.

Although THE SANDCASTLE GIRLS is centered on a romance, it is also a history lesson, and a riveting one at that. Bohjalian narrates a personal and moving story about an important historical event that people have largely forgotten. This is a sober, elegiac and touching novel that does not flinch away from depicting the depths of human suffering, but is also able to illuminate the human capacity for survival and resurgence.

Not a day at the beach

The Sandcastle Girls - Chris Bohjalian
3 stars

Once again, a story with two timelines; contemporary and historical. A twenty-first century novelist begins to explore her Armenian ancestry. Her research leads her to her grandparent's courtship and the Armenian genocide. The story line shifts between the actual events of 1915 and the contemporary discoveries of Laura Petrosian.

The 1915 story line was by far the most interesting. I liked Elizabeth Endicott and the other American characters. Bohjalian approaches the horror of the catastrophe from the perspective of these American relief workers who clearly don't know the extent of the disaster. I could feel their desperation when they began to realize the futility of their efforts. This was a very effective way to disclose the enormity of this crime.

It was so effective that I could not connect to any if the more trivial concerns of the characters. The love story seemed unlikely. The tragic coincidences and devastating secrets added drama to an overdramatic situation. The modern story just annoyed me as it interrupted the wartime narrative.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. It did hold my interest and I learned more about the extent of the Armenian genocide. Unfortunately, I thought the storytelling was choppy. The two plot lines never came together coherently for me. I suspect that my impression of this book suffered because I'd recently read The Garden of Evening Mists. Both books deal with similar themes and situations. Tan Twan Eng did a far better job with multiple time lines and the themes of war and survival.

Excellent, Intelligent and Insightful Book -- Worth The Money.
By HookedOnBooks
Okay I have now finished this book and WOW is all I can say.

The deep research that went into this monumental work was very well done.

The information is priceless.

Now, this is about the most I have spent on a book. One of my Maxillien De LaFayette books I bought on Amazon for $35.00 I was offered $2,000 or more. awhile back at a book exchange fair. (No I didn't sell it).

This is such a book.

Some books impart real wisdom and people who are avid readers of serious research books know which books these are.

My five star review cannot do this book justice. D. Cederquist, S. Hayman and qquilter's reviews are far better than mine.

Angel Wars, is not only a book I will want in my library until I take leave of this small rock called Earth - but hopefully my children and grandchildren will want to hang onto, keep and read it.

If we have that long.

Like in the Wizard of Oz, we, like Dorothy, are trapped in the wicked witch's castle and the sands in the hour glass is running down quickly.

Many prophecies in the Bible are coming to pass as we speak.

It's "The Cosmic Chess Match" (also a good book here on Amazon by L.A. Marzulli), a other dimensional battle still being played out and we are the pawns and the prize.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if Angel Wars is one day valued at $2,000 or more.

Chapter 3 is Mankind's Earliest History, his real history.
Chapter 12 is Ghosts and Aliens - or Demons (the deception will be great) and yes in this review I have repeated this phase twice knowingly, not being senile, but to re-emphasize a important point. When this disclosure is coming, and it will soon, most of you will be fooled big time.
Chapter 14 - Islam's Fifth Column - For Muslims, I humbly and respectfully suggest, perhaps the angel Gabriel or Jibrail that brought the message to Prophet Mohammed was not a angel from Heaven/God. I realize Muslims do not believe in fallen angels and many people now no longer believe in God or satan.

Keep in mind if you are a Muslim, I could walk up to any of you and say, "Hi, my name is Mary O'Connor"......and well, my name is not Mary O'Connor. This not only goes for Muslims but for anyone dabbling in channeling.

A book based on hate can only come from lucifer. ALL OF OUR PROBLEMS today on our planet stem from hate and greed or corruption of the soul, and yes many people that profess to be Christians also are guilty of greed, hate and corruption of their soul.

Yeshua gave us a new commandment, that of love.

Chapter 16 is The Prelude to Transhumanism: Think super human, Borg, talk of implants that manipulate or change our DNA, corrupting the image.

"Corrupting The Image" also another good book on Amazon by Douglas Hamp. The image referred to is found in Genesis, "God's image".

Chapter 18 is Super Soldiers, Terminators and Demon Machines. Drones are just the beginning.
Chapter 19 is UFOs or Chariots of the False Gods - disclosure is imminent, but it will be a major deception.
Chapter 20 is Noah's Weather - think Haarp, weather wars, technology to wage war upon other nations that do not comply with satan's NWO by weather and or earthquakes.
Chapter 21 is Loss of Free Will - think voice to skull technology and other dimensional entity's possession, do the research, this is not science fiction.

Think about the previous shootings, look closely at the eyes of these "madmen", not simply strung out on drugs, I've seen drugged out individuals, having worked ER in a large inner city hospital. What is currently going on is beyond that level.

Chapter 24 is Techno-Immortality or Eternal Damnation - No RFID Chip for me. I will take death over damnation and folks, satan, hell and God are real. You take the chip and you can kiss your soul good bye.

I went 49 of my 60 years being Agnostic and studied the occult (popular since the 60's). I studied the occult for over 3 decades under names you could Google.

Has anyone else noticed our music, our art, our films are now almost all "dark"? There is a reason, this isn't happenstance.

Simply pull your teenager's ipod and research the lyrics to the music they are listening too. Really open your eyes to the darkness that seems to be spreading.

A woman writes a novel about a magick school and goes from being on welfare to a billionaire. Now her books have millions of fans that want to go to magick school.

In my review of Harry Potter and Marilyn Manson I am met with hostility. Why? Spellbound and the millions of these fans aren't even aware they and their souls have been captured............they've been tricked into believing this type of entertainment is harmless.

Read Russ Dizdar's book, "The Black Awakening" after reading Harry Potter.

Then there is Lady Gaga with her millions of "Little Monsters". This from a well versed past occultist is blatant dark magick (note the k and do your research).

Reality is often times stranger than fiction. Fiction is meant to distract and entertain and most of our "entertainment" has turned very dark, ugly and satanic.

Some books you buy for both information and as a investment. (I buy for information and entertainment). My copy isn't for sale.

Again, as of today this book is the most expensive one I have paid for (For me a $50.00 book is expensive) but after reading it, I've decided it's priceless.

Quayle really did his homework on this gem. A lot of questions concerning the Bible Quayle has expertly laid to rest for me anyway.

"The most important trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the World that he doesn't exist!" From one of the characters in the movie, "The Usual Suspects" said during an interrogation.

Also in "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu (you should all have a copy of this ancient book in your library) - to be victorious in battle, to win the war, one must remain invisible, unseen, unknown. Fool the enemy into believing you do not even exist ensures a easy victory.

My favorite quote is from Stephen King's movie, "The Stand" wherein Mother Abigail says to Nick, "You may not believe in God but He believes in you."

For those that simply do not believe, I humbly suggest you read this book and than go to the sections of the Bible Steve quotes from and reconsider your "modern" opinion.

Highly, highly recommend this book. You won't get through this one in a couple days and if you are a long time researcher this book will leave you with remarkable insights.

This book is a keeper.

I did not buy this book at Amazon as I note it is only for sale by sellers, however, the prices marked are good (under $50.00) and this book will, I most assure you, go up in value - there currently as of today only 12 sellers, 12 copies available. I would grab one, you won't regret it, not if you're into safeguarding your soul.

And watch, with the new pope - disclosure is coming. Instead of lizard scaled angels with dark wings, satan has shape shifted his legion into a more sophisticated "alien space brothers/abductions" but it's still Angel Wars.

A cosmic, multidimensional battle that has been going on for a very long time.

Even if one is just into Science Fiction, grab this - nothing any of these Science Fiction writers is writing can come close to this book.

Angel Wars
By S. Hayman
This is a very in depth book. He shows the relationship between what happened centuries ago with what is happening now using facts. Years of research has gone into this book. As you read it all begins to come together. Many people are so blase when it comes to end times events... this is not Disneyland. Reality can be tough. The spiritual battle for and against mankind is very evident.

Good Book and the only Quayle work you'll need
By Dennis
This is a pretty decent book going over the Giants of the Bible, genetic manipulation, bible prophecy, and transhumanism. While I don't subscribe to every thing Quayle says or writes about, at the very least it's somewhat informative and entertaining. I had a few of his earlier works and eventually sold them and found Angel Wars to be a summary of Quayle's work. The book and page quality is great and it is jammed packed with info that will probably be more insightful if you've never read much of the material before. However there a great deal of quotes and references that were new and reveling. It's a little pricey for a paperback these days, but worth the price if you're interested in the material. Approach it with an open mind and take it with a grain of salt and definitely pursue the information on your own.

Other Colors: Essays and a Story (Vintage International), by Orhan Pamuk

In the three decades that Nobel prize-winning author Orhan Pamuk has devoted himself to writing fiction, he has also produced scores of witty, moving, and provocative essays and articles. He engages the work of Nabokov, Kundera, Rushdie, and Vargas Llosa, among others, and he discusses his own books and writing process. We also learn how he lives, as he recounts his successful struggle to quit smoking, describes his relationship with his daughter, and reflects on the controversy he has attracted in recent years. Here is a thoughtful compilation of a brilliant novelist's best nonfiction, offering different perspectives on his lifelong obsessions with loneliness, contentment, and the books and cities that have shaped his experience.

From Publishers Weekly
Though the latest book from Nobel Prize-winning Pamuk (Istanbul, Snow) is a standard late-career essay collection, it makes clear the reasons behind the Turkish author's acclaim. Eschewing flash and flourish, Pamuk's style is plain, simple and persuasive-but therein lies its subtle power, well represented over more than 75 pieces divided into sections like "Living and Worrying" and "Politics, Europe, and Other Problems of Being Oneself." Self-reflection and cultural evolution emerge often as twin themes, as in his consideration of the Thousand and One Nights: "In those days, young Turks like me who considered themselves modern viewed the classics of eastern literature as one might a dark and impenetrable forest." These concerns lead naturally to political considerations, such as his conclusion that "the lies about the war in Iraq and... secret CIA prisons have so damaged the West's credibility in Turkey... it is more and more difficult for people like me to make the case for true western democracy in my part of the world." There's humor as well; in "Giving Up Smoking," a smoking cab driver begs Pamuk's pardon: "He was opening the window. 'No,' I said, 'keep it closed. I've given up smoking.'" Also included are musings on his own books and a short story, "To Look Out the Window." Disarmingly honest, Pamuk refuses to give in to melodrama or stylistic quirks, giving his feeling and frustration crystalline clarity and lasting weight.

From Bookmarks Magazine
The Baltimore Sun describes 2006 Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk’s latest work as "part diary, part travelogue, part confession, part writer’s guide to the galaxy, part political tract, part spiritual journey, part paean to the beauty of language and the configuration of words." Though critics agreed that the pieces were uneven, they were completely divided over which essays were the best. They also differed over Maureen Freely’s translation: some praised her smooth, conversational rendering, while others considered it too loose. Other Colors is not intended as an introduction to Pamuk’s work. Readers who have appreciated his brilliant, powerful fiction will enjoy peeking behind the curtain, but those unfamiliar with his work should start with one of his novels.

Other Colors? Think Rainbow
By Byron
Not a moment or detail of life and living appears to pass Orhan Pamuk by without notice. This collection is breathtaking, both in terms of the wide range of topics he tackles and how easily he transitions between what might otherwise be considered mundane vs. majestic moments. The glue here is that Pamuk brings an incredible eye and humanity to everything he touches, leaving little to get lost in translation. Few writers that I have come across over the years capture the texture and tone of those often simple daily scenes more sparingly, vividly and memorably. Fewer still write as though literally every single word on every page matters. Here, they do, in the hands of someone who clearly loves everything about putting pen to paper. You can't help but read a book like this and savor the experience. What a joy--I finished it only a few days ago and I'm already looking forward to re-reading.

A Resurrection of the Ordinary
By prisrob
"Pamuk has two enduring loves: books and Istanbul. Often they converge as his journeys through his hometown come to resemble excursions through memory itself." Pico Iyer

I had the extraordinary good fortune to see and hear Orhan Pamuk speak at Dartmouth College about his life, his writing, his family and his books, on the first anniversary of his Noble Prize for Literature. Orhan Pamuk elicited total attention as he brought us from his education as an architect to a realization that his life was in writing. His life was not complete without books, paper and pen, and he spoke emotionally about his writing life. "It keeps me sane", he said. There you have it. In this day and age of stress and strain, as he said "I feel as if I have two souls, sort of schizophrenic". I understand this completely after reading his book 'Other Colors'. Like his country, Turkey, he is caught between two continents Asia and Europe. He sits at his desk looking out towards the Bosphorus Sea and writes about the land and the people he loves.

After Pamuk won the Nobel he was badgered by the press for new stories. He was used to writing slowly, a couple hundred pages a year, but now he needed to have 4 pages in two hours every week. These stories in 'Many Colors' are the accumulation of that time. He was also asked over and over why all his books had the titles of colors, 'The White Castle', 'The Black Book', and 'My Name Is Red'- thus, to satisfy his urge to put one over on the media, he titled this book, 'Many Colors'. This book contains so many fascinating stories. One of my favorites is that of the Ferries of the Bosphorous. When Pamuk was a boy, his father and his friends all chose one ferry that they could identify as theirs. As the ferries would come down the sea towards Istanbul, they could make out their ferry by one characteristic, usually the shape and size of the smokestack. They could then place their ferry, and it seemed their world was a little smaller. Those large ferries are gone now replaced by motorized, faster versions. And, Pamuk speaks lovingly of his daughter, Ruya. One year she did not like school and would spend hours giving her father reasons why she should not attend. He wrote down these daily messages verbatim, and into a story we can all relate to, we have been there. Pamuk tells us about his favorite authors. Dostoevsky, Nabokov, Camus, Bernhard and each author has a place in his heart. He reads them every day and it is because of them he became a writer. He relates his personal experience in an earthquake that took the lives of many of his countrymen. His books are his life, and he writes about book covers, his library, his to be read lists, the Freedom of the writer. Pamuk's guide to the Mediterranean, to the European bank, and the Views from the Capital of the World, New York City. His Interview by Paris Match is a must read, as is his PEN Arthur Miller Speech. And, of course his arrest for his speaking out about the Armenian tragedy. So much to read and to discover about this man.

"In "Other Colors," his first big assemblage of nonfiction, Pamuk gives us several of his many selves inta centrifugal gathering of memory-pieces, sketches, interviews and unexpected flights. The result is a gallery of Pamuks: here is the author of the haunted, half-lit inquiry into melancholy and neglect, "Istanbul: Memories and the City," with further glimpses of the "forest of secret stairways" that is his home; here is the man who so loves books that he wrote a whole novel." Pico Iyer

Orhan Pamuk is a fascinating man who is a writer of the extraordinary. He has taken the extraordinary of life and turned it into a 'resurrection of the ordinary',Marilynne Robinson's novel "Housekeeping" by way of Pico Iyer's"
so that we can better understand the day to day existence of his world. It is easy to fall under Pamuk's spell when he is talking about his writing and his country. I found this book so illuminating. Pamuk has a wonderful sense of humor and irony. He gives photographers 5 minutes to take pictures at the beginning of his lecture, he finds the flashes interfere with his concentration. At the end of his lecture when the question and answer period started, Pamuk would take a flash picture of each questioner. A roar of approval from the audience! Bravo, Pamuk!

Heartily Recommended. prisrob

Opening the Writerly Shell
By Susan C. Bentler
"Other Colors," is a delicious, thoughtful read and a further opening of the writerly shell that insulates Mr. Pamuk from a world wanting badly for a bit order and deliberation. Perhaps this explains the scrutiny the author received as Turkey's author-on-trial-for-thinking-out-loud and Nobel laureate.

Orhan Pamuk is brilliantly able to bring that bit of order and deliberation to the fore writing handsomely from his interior. He describes his writing life with great insight and candor while discussing deliciously, authors he admires. I especially enjoyed the essays in the book about Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Nabokov among others).

Having set aside a rainy, grey Sunday to read "Other Colors," I felt a lovely, lonely empathy for the passages on book-mania. In one essay he describes dead-on, the odd reassurances that a book elicits, not merely as an escape mechanism but also as physical totem.

For those who read Orhan Pamuk, this essay collection is food for a book lover's soul. One story in the book is an evocation of his childhood memories of life with his abandoned mother. It stands out poignantly among the essays as he admits elsewhere in the book that she no longer speaks to him.

How curiously private yet opague is this important, gifted author. Hats off, Mr.Pamuk. As one of your "implied readers" I await anything your pen may put to paper.

Review
“Like a canoe-building manual for dry land, Matt Berger’s elucidating treatise will elevate your skateboard shop skills from “ollie” to “goofy-foot kick-flip”, with panache. Build yourself a stylish vehicle that requires no fuel beyond bacon, vanquishing the traffic and the claustrophobia of conventional conveyance.”

- Nick Offerman
Actor, comedian, woodworker, and author of "Paddle Your Own Canoe"

"When my dad, brothers and I opened Val Surf in 1962, we had decided to include skateboards in our product offering thus making us the world's first legitimate skateboard shop. The skateboard has evolved so much since then, so it's great to see a new generation of skatemakers head back into the garage shop to build their own decks. A copy of The Handmade Skateboard would be a very helpful tool to guide them along."

-- Mark “Wally” Richards, President and Co-Founder of Val Surf Boardshop and early skateboard pioneer

"I know Matt Berger from the woodworking world so I expected this book to be an excellent resource for the “how-to” of deck building. What I didn’t expect was the healthy dose of history and cultural perspective, leaving me much more informed and appreciative of the skateboard movement and the thought that goes into even the most modest skateboard design."

- Marc Spagnuolo, aka "The Wood Whisperer"

Berger knows his stuff!

A smart and beautiful book! Top shelf how-to with a well researched look back at the history of skateboards that puts everything in context.
I grew up skating and have rekindled my love of boarding by riding with my son. He bought me this book for his birthday with the hope that we could build a skate deck. We're now on our third board this month. . . . And planning still more.

This is one of the cooler woodworking/DIY books I've seen in a while. Reading it, I got that great feeling that the best DIY books produce: "I can make anything!"

The book is a quality job, with images, illustrations, carefully crafted text, and a variety of topics. It begins with a very nice overview of the history of skateboards, everything from the Dogtown days to the rise of competitive boards and boarding. The projects themselves are elegant, with five or six individual board builds described -- some long and some short. All the boards are based on wood decks, as you might imagine. Some of the decks are flat, so can be built with simple store-bought plywood. Others require you to glue up the deck (out of straight lumber) or glue up the ply-board deck to get bends going on at the tail. Some projects are simpler than others, which is cool.

You'll need some woodworking know-how to make some of these boards, but the simpler ones can be built by just about anyone. Just add trucks and some grip tape and you're all set.

A few years ago I built my own canoe, having thought it was impossible task before taking on the job. Now I'm looking forward to making my first skateboard, having ridden on store-bought boards all my life. Anyone interested in DIY projects will like this book, I think, and even if you're not into making things, check this book out for its history and overview of the technology of the skateboard! :)
