About the Author
Conrad Phillip Kottak (A.B. Columbia, 1963; Ph.D. Columbia, 1966) is Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1968.  In 1991 he was honored for his teaching by the University and the state of Michigan.  In 1992 he received an excellence in teaching award from the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts of the University of Michigan.  Professor Kottak has done fieldwork in cultural anthropology in Brazil (since 1962), Madagascar (since 1966), and the United States. In current research projects, Kottak and his colleagues have investigated the emergence of ecological awareness in Brazil, the social context of deforestation in Madagascar, and popular participation in economic development planning in northeastern Brazil.

I purchased this for a college anthropology class, and it was slightly less expensive than the campus bookstore. The book is excellent - well organized, informative, and extremely interesting. I will be keeping this book, and not reselling it.

Great book for class, came a little more beat up than I like.

Great book and not too heavy to carry. It is very easy to read and makes Anthropology interesting. It's a paper-back and gets a little beat up if you keep it in your bag but that's expected. It was great for class and it has some really great side pieces that help tie in the lesson to real world examples. The only thing I didn't really like is that the book came a little beat up to begin with.

Good, but with some editorial issues

The book has some editorial issues, but it's still an exhaustive and comprehensive book on the subject of SS7.

The editorial issues appear to be sections that need updating. For instance, portions of the first chapter are very dated, and no longer apply in 2014. For instance, on page 33, the author writes about "PCS" as if it were still the late 1990s. Carriers have now started using their PCS 1900 MHz spectrum for LTE. Also, on page 28, the author writes, "...[there] are many obstacles to supporting Internet access on wireless phones. The bandwidth required to support Web access is not yet available in North America (although Japan and many other countries are already enjoying this level of access)." This was the case as recently as several years ago when we had feature phones with WAP browsers, but no longer applies in 2014 when we have 100 Mbps LTE networks and smart phones and tablets with fully-functional browsers like Chrome and Safari.

If you want to learn SS7, and you're willing to overlook some issues with dated content, then this is still a good book.

Of Once And Future Goddesses

As a recently-published author, I would like to express my admiration for the work of Barbara G. Walker. Of all the sources that I quoted from my bibliography, Walker was by far the most significant. The Woman's Encyclopedia is the most valuable book in my collection, and it represents a superhuman piece of research. The suppression of the Feminine and the patriarchal re-writing of history can be traced through innumerable references - from Christianity's assimilation of pagan rituals and festivals to the creation of the mythology of feminine evil. Walker, like Jungian analyst June Singer, believes that patriarchal religion is the basis for the suppression of women. The case she builds is frankly unassailable. After reading this classic study, one cannot fail to see the transforming power of the Mother Goddess in everything from A Midsummer Night's Dream and Finnegans Wake to Mary Poppins and The Matrix. Barbara Walker is a modern-day Wisewoman, and we can never have enough of those. In a sterile, left-brain, hunter-killer psytocracy, Walker's books shine like a beacon for those who still have the strength to dream.

This encyclopedia documents the subversion of global matriarchal cultures. It is immaculately well-referenced, much more so than the contrived versions of history that have been force-fed to us. There are relatively few works of scholarship that have the power to elicit such emotional reactions and defensiveness from the most privileged among us. You'll never look at fingers, menstrual blood, or religion the same way again.

This encyclopedia is so absorbing I got utterly lost in it for hours and hours. Finally someone has seen through the patriarchal smokescreen and exposed the hypocrisy and lies. Many times I found myself laughing out loud at some of her caustically humorous observations. I'm sure this must be on the Pope's list of books forbidden from the eyes of all good Catholics...Blessed Be!

For a business major, this came as a welcome relief. Problem Solving and Logic class(PRL202) became a joy to attend as we worked through this text book. Environmental policies were informative, but figuring out how many Hrunkulu's could fit on an elevator was riveting.

At the conclusion of the book, the student feels like as he walked through a world of Doctor Seuss's creation, and came out with a far greater understanding of mathematics and logic.
This area of study would be of great interest to a student who needs mathematics credits at school, but does not want to take calculus or trigonometry.

Those who home school could easily use this textbook after the completion of geometry and algebra. Parents be warned that the concepts discussed in the textbook are best understood in a group setting.

Of all my textbooks I purchased for my college degree, this is the only textbook that I still have on my shelf.

I give Crossing the River with Dogs a hearty recommendation.

Worth every cent

I am a first year teacher, teaching high school math topics (Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calc, etc) and I find the problems in this book to be amazing! I have a study skills class that is required for all 10th graders. The classes have students who are in Pre-Algebra up to students taking Algebra 2 honors. I find the problems in this book to be an even playing field for all levels! The problems require the students to think and problem solve using various strategies explained throughout the book.

I've recommended it to every teacher I know, and they've all agreed that this book is a must have! No matter what you teach, you can always find a handful of problems that will have the students becoming more advanced problem solvers.

Compared with Erik Trinkhaus and Pat Shipman's The Neandertals ( LJ 12/92), which traces the history of Neanderthal discoveries, this book is more concerned with current interpretations of the fossil record. English anthropologists Stringer and Gamble hope to settle the controversy over the Neanderthals' proper branch on humanity's family tree by taking their case to a general audience. They marshall the evidence in favor of the "Out of Africa 2" scenario, contending that Neanderthal populations in Europe and the Middle East were replaced by a second African migration between 130,000 and 50,000 years ago. Neanderthals, therefore, are not directly ancestral to modern humans. The authors make a strong case for their interpretations, but they offer little more than a caricature of competing theories. Still, this is an important and readable book, with many good illustrations. Recommended for academic and public libraries.

Having only a cursory knowledge about human pre-history, I asked a colleague in the anthropology department for a good primer. He gave me this. It was a veritable cornicoupia of information, even as the authors sought to provide their own answers to quesitons of acadmeic controversey.

The central question Stringer and Gamble seek to answer is: are modern humans kin to Neaderthals, or are we distantly related? In answering this, readers are treated to a briefing on the ice age world of the Lower and Middle Paleolithic, the relation of Neanderthals to other early humans, the way in which Neanderthals have been understood (and seen) by science and the public, before the book really hits its stride in disucssing the archaeology of Neanderthal sites and what they tell us about these early humans.

The authors belive that modern humans are related to (rather than directly from) Neanderthals, and that by the Upper Paleolithic, were being replaced by modern humans coming out of Africa ("Out of Africa II"). The evidence in support of this is strong, although not overwhelming: mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) as well as behavioural data are primarily used.

In all, it was a worthwhile and fascinating read, and certainly provides more depth on the specific case of Neanderthals than other books on early humans.

The authors really do a great job in doing a detailed study of Neanderthals, their lives and their world. They catalogue the fossils found, examine how we know what we know from the bones, tools and even the ash from the fires.
The only problem is that the book was published in 1993-1994 and does not take into account later DNA tests and the four-year-old child who lived five thousand years after the last of the Neanderthals SHOULD of died (found in 1999)who showed signs of interbreeding between modern humans and Neanderthals. So, while the conclusion in the book that we did not come from Neanderthals may not be correct (and still open to debate), the chapters dealing in detail with Neanderthal tools, camp sites, society, art and burial are a must for people interested in the subject...

THE BEST BOOK to learn basic Travis Picking

A great book for guitar players who want to learn Travis picking. It covers all the basics with good song examples. I've tried a lot of books and Mark Hanson's instruction style is right on the money. He starts out giving you accompaniment only examples to support a song being sung and finally has you doing a melodic version of a great blues tune. The included CD shows you what it's supposed to sound like. Once I got through this book I went on to his "Art of Solo Fingerpicking" which takes you to the next level, i.e. playing melody with your Travis style accompaniment.

There are instruction books - and then there's Mark Hanson

If you have been playing guitar for a bit and have learned the standard 5-6 chords, but are no longer satisfied, then this book can get you to the next level.
Fifteen years ago, I picked up this book and tape set after a year of strumming away at Beatle, Dylan, etc.. tunes. It provided a simple and enjoyable entry into learing fingerstyle guitar. I have bought dozens of other guitar books and can say that this one was the best 'teaching' book I read. No jargon, no complicated charts, just a few simple practice patterns and some fun tumes to play. Also don't miss the companion book The Art of Solo Fingerpicking, which picks up right where this one leaves off. I still get a lot of kudos when I play the The Art of Solo Fingerpicking tunes to other musicians. No doubt, the best two book music instruction set I ever bought.

Comprehensive and Easy to Follow

This book has easy-to-follow instructions and enjoyable songs to play. I am only 1/3 of the way through this book, and thoroughly enjoying it. It has some familiar and not-so-familiar folk standards, leading the player through basic patterns first, then adding variations, melodies, ornaments and finally culminating in a full fingerstyle selection that will challenge almost any player at any level. However Mark Hanson gives you all the tools you need to get there, in step-by-step detail. The book would be great without the CD, but the added audio instruction is also extremely helpful. I recommend this to anyone interested in fingerpicking and fingerstyle guitar.

Calatrava secured his reputation with Zurich's Stadelhofen Station (1982-1990). It is a reputation which has continued to grow with other innovative projects such as the BCE Galleria in Toronto (1987-1992); Lyon Airport Station (1989-1994); a project for a bio-shelter and the completion of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (1991), New York; Tenerife Concert Hall, under construction; and the current extension of the Milwaukee Art Museum. But it was with his competition entry for the conversion of the Reichstag Building in Berlin (Joint 1st Prize, 1992) that gained the attention of the international community at large.

The explicitly urban approach to any task is characteristic of Calatrava's work. Whether bus shelter, bridge or airport terminal, what underlies Calatrava's approach is a quest for a deeper understanding of the static forces at work, to which he gives unprecedented expression. This constant experimentation and inquiry has led to solutions that are inventive and undisputedly elegant.

This book goes into great detail in describing some of Calatrava's greatest architectural pieces. There are photographs (night and day shots) accompanying the CAD plans. It a great book to look through and learn from.
