Ponderous, detailed, somewhat obscure

Throughout history there are characters who aren't at the center of the stage, but who are important supporting players in the world's affairs. Gideon Welles was one of these: he served as Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy during all of the Civil War, and oversaw the expansion of that service from a tiny pre-war, almost exclusively sail-driven fleet into a large, steam-driven armada, sufficient to defeat Confederate ironclads, hunt down commerce raiders, and blockade all of the South. It was a monumental task, and Welles proved equal to it after a shaky start.

Who was this man, how did he come to prominence, and why did Lincoln appoint him to the post? Those are the questions that the author, John Niven, attempts to answer. Welles was primarily a newspaperman, though he did work in various government posts also, including one stint in the Department of the Navy during the Mexican-American War. However, he'd essentially been elected to no offices prior to being appointed Navy Secretary, and he'd only held that one appointment in the Navy Department prior to the appointment.

He did have one singular qualification from Lincoln's point of view, though. He was pretty much a founding member of the Republican Party, having broken with the Democrats over various issues relating to slavery. This gave him entree into Lincoln's circle of advisers and friends, and when Welles entered, he impressed people, and was on the list to be appointed to a cabinet post as a result.

I generally enjoyed this book, within limits. The author is a historian, a specialist in mid-19th Century political history, and it shows. Unfortunately, though the book is reasonably well-written, the author doesn't do much for context. So Andrew Jackson appears, for instance, without an introduction, and Welles at various times either belongs to or opposes political groups called "Loco-Focos", "Barnburners", and "Hunkers". The author never bothers to really explain any of that, so you're expected to know what a Loco-Foco was, on your own.

Those misgivings aside, this is *the* biography of Welles, and it belongs in the library of anyone interested in the Lincoln administration and the era.

It was 34 years ago I first picked up this book and have been a fan of John Niven ever since. This book is the best in the distinguished list of Dr. Niven;s writings. Gideon Welles moves from editor to politician to powerful figure in the Lincoln administration and we follow him as fellow travelers on this voyage. This is one book well worth the price for your library.

Excellent, Readable Biography of Lincoln's Navy Secretary

John Niven sheds some light on Gideon Welles, the 19th century politician best known for his service as Abraham Lincoln’s Navy secretary. But Welles was far more than that as this book illustrates. A leading Jacksonian editor based out of Connecticut, Welles was always a competent and respected member of Lincoln’s Cabinet who also served as a close adviser to Andrew Johnson as well. Welles also helped launch the GOP. Niven sheds some light on this obscure figure and his role as a Jacksonian Democrat who opposed slavery, often clashing with “doughface” Isaac Toucey (who served in Polk’s and Buchanan’s Cabinets and really needs a biography) over the party’s direction in Connecticut. Besides offering a good account of his leading the Navy during the war, Niven is also able to shed some light on Welles’ personal life and his various writings before and after the war, including his efforts to show Lincoln as a strong figure. The book is helped by a good use of primary sources, including Welles’ diaries. This is one of the best biographies of a 19th century American politician offering new insights in a readable fashion. Highly recommended.

At the time when political, military and religius forces are active in the middle east, an updated version of the book by Haggai Eshed: "REUVEN SHILOAH - THE MAN BEHIND THE MOSSAD - Secret Diplomacy in the Creation of Israel" has been published in English.
The book which was originally published in Hebrew in 1988 tells the story of Reuven Shiloah, the founder of Israel's intelligence community and first head of the world famous MOSSAD.
The personality of Shiloah, who for years worked alongside the Jewish leadership in the pre-state years and during the first ten years after independence has almost been forgotten. Using newly opened and uncovered archives and first time interviews the book describes the exciting and mysterious life of Reuven Shiloah on the backround of some of the major events in the international arena in general and in the middle-east in particular during the years 1931-1959.
Some of the major activities described in the book are:
*Undercover work in Iraq in the 1930's.
*Intelligence ties with the Allies before and during world war 2.
*Paradroping Jewish activistes into occupied Europe.
*Forming and heading Israel's intelligence community after indipendence.
*Conducting secret negoatiations with king Abdallah of Jordan.
*Creating the base for the stratigic ties between Israel and the U.S.
*Forming secret treaties with Turkey, Iran and Ethiopia.
The book was written by the veteran journalist Haggai Eshed who passed away several months after the book was originaly published in 1988. The book is well researched and well written. A few of the issues raised remain unanswerd due to the scarcity of data and still classified documents.
The flowing translation and adaptation by David and Leah Zinder enable readers who are less informed about modern developments in the middle-east to fully comprehend and benefit from the book.

Dr. Cody, who experimented with techniques for two years, pioneers the use of a model on whose skin muscles, tendons, and fascial sheaths are painted with scientific accuracy. Because of the elasticity of the skin and paint, the painted musculature expands and contracts along with the underlying muscles. Thus Cody's technique enables students of anatomy to visualize the muscles beneath the skin and the changes brought about by movement.

This book is useful for artists such as painters and sculptors trying to accurately represent a muscular male body in different poses (like greek sculptures - Atlas, The Thinker, etc). Every page shows the model in a different position comparing the same pose in the "buff" with and without the painted muscles.

I bought this book a month ago, I still have not received the book and it is 8 days past its delivery quote.
I sent an email a week ago and still havent had a reply. They gave me a fake package tracking number and a window that opens saying "we do not have anything to do with TEXTBOOKSNOW. Please do not contact us for tracking their packages."
I would not recomment their services .

An accurate look into the male mind

Not that I've personally ever cheated before, but I know guys who have and this book is very accurate in its analysis of how men think, and why they may become motivated to cheat.

That said, I'd also be interested to read a book on Why Women Cheat, because stats show they cheat about as much as men do, and often for different reasons.

As Luminous As Suns that shine in the rain

An exquisite journey into a mind and heart open for all to join and be the quest. Reminiscent of his equally stimulating companion volume, STAND STILL LIKE THE HUMMINGBIRD, this selection of stories and essays shows again the wide range of mood, style and subject matter which Henry Miller's work commands. As Lawrence Durrell once wrote, "I suspect that Henry Miller's final place will be among those towering anomalies of authorship like Whitman or Blake who have left us, not simply works of art, but a corpus of ideas which motivate and influence a whole cultural pattern."
Here is a man who, however brief was their intercourse, was wed to Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe (just kidding, in Henry's dreams maybe, but NOT, that was the other Miller, the playwright, Arthur). Here is a man expressing himself with exhilarating candor and freedom, writing "from the heart" which a refreshing lack of reticence. Miller involves the reader directly in his thoughts and feelings. "His real aim," Karl Shapiro has written, "is to find the living core of our world whenever it survives and in whatever manifestation, in art, in literature, in human behavior itself. It is then that he sings, praises, and shouts at the top of his lungs with the uncontainable hilarity he is famous for."
Whether Miller lifts up D. H. Lawrence as in "Creative Death" and "Into the Future," or expounds the philosophy of the psychoanalyst, E. Graham Howe as in "The Wisdom of the Heart," or honors Keyserling on the occasion of his 60th birthday in July 1940 as in "The Philosopher Who Philosophizes," his genius is immutable. If you have read, even occasionally, Henry David (Thoreau), Ralph Waldo (Emerson), Uncle Walt (Whitman), this volume is for you. Henry Miller says nothing here either more offensive or less insightful than these three Transcendentalists who lived before him.
Including some of Henry Miller's best-known writings, here are essays on Raimu, the film star; Brassi, the photographer; Erich Gutkind, the metaphysician -- who Miller puts, like Lawrence, in the line of "Akhenaton, Hermes Trismegistus, Plotinus, Paracelsus, Blake, Neitzsche: he is a visionary, a prophet, a man ahead of his time." In "Reflections on Writing," Miller examines his own position as a writer. In "Seraphita" and "Balzac and His Double," he applies himself to the work of another writer.
In short, throughout this wisdom book, there is an illuminating spiritual unity in the deep diversity and high hilarity, at once, reconciling sacred and profane, regenerating love -- always fearless, always totally alive with the joy of living the examined life -- open-hearted and generous to all who have ears to hear. As Joseph Campbell so aptly encouraged, "Bless Thy Bliss."

The Essential Henry Miller

Henry Miller often provokes many emotions in people. Depending on the book or books that they have read. I've always loved his collection of essays, "Stand Still Like the Hummingbird". So, I couldn't wait to finally get my hands on a copy of this book, "Wisdom of the Heart".

The first three essays in the book were quite good and got me hooked. Essentially they were about his philosophy that you must lose something of yourself to find something. To embrace the pain to find the pleasure. Right on track on his writing of my other favorite book from him.

Unfortunately after those brilliant essays, he turned back into that angry man who I met briefly in "Tropic of Cancer". That was a book I really couldn't get into. After a while the anger took over and it was hard to read the philosophy in what he was trying to say. All you felt was anger. So, needless to say I became quickly disenchanted with several of the essays after, "Reflections on Writing". I was hoping it wasn't the only 3 essays that I would like. So, with trepidation, I kept reading.

He finally got back to the writing I've come to really like when I read, "Into the Future". He was back to speculating on artistic life by comparing DH Lawrence's concept of the Holy Ghost with those in history that personify it. It basically asks the question that do artists have to suffer for their art? Is it a necessity? Although Miller seems to have answered it to his satisfaction, I'm not sure he has done so to my satisfaction but I did enjoy his journey into the question.

In the end he explores Balzac and what he considers to be one of his pinnacle works. His essays just didn't have the same flair and philosophy I had come to expect from Miller. Still, he comes off with the philosophy that an artist must suffer for his work and then overcome that suffering to surpass even his own ego. I'm not sure I buy that, but it is an interesting philosophy.

In the end, I did not enjoy this essay book as I had with "Stand Still Like the Hummingbird" which is still one of my all time favorite books. His anger in "The Wisdom of the Heart" is very obvious and the book doesn't seem to string the essays in a cohesive way as my favorite book. I'm disappointed, but still have my favorite on my keeper shelf.

Henry Miller - Beyond all manner of classification

I started with the Rosy Crucifixion (Sexus, then Plexus and finally Nexus) and then went on to his collections of essays, including The Wisdom of the Heart and Stand Still Like the Hummingbird. Henry Miller has been a major influence in my life by virtue of these readings. I have read most or all of The Wisdom of the Heart more than once, and the essay which gives the book its title concerning the writer/psychiatrist E. Gordon Howe is one I come back to again and again for inspiration.
