Challenging! Inspiring! Biblically-Solid!

Facedown is a companion volume to Matt Redman's album of the same name. But don't think it's just a fluffy little book meant to make some money off the popularity of the CD. Facedown is a well-researched, well-written, moving treatise on worship as a response to God's majesty and glory. Redman, an extraordinary songwriter, is also a fine prose-writer. He makes his points clearly and elegantly.
Every worship leader and worship songwriter should read this book. But it's not just for worship insiders. It will help every reader to worship God more fully and humbly.

Wow...just wow

Matt Redman released his CD "Facedown" and I don't think people really understood what he meant in the title, maybe they did, but they didn't completely understand it. Matt Redman puts that into his words in this book. Give us a totally new perspective of worshipping, on how it should really be. I must agree with him, how he says when you are truly worshipping you will be facedown before the lord, giving him everything you have. Everyone should pick up a copy of this book.

a great overview

This book provides an insightful and practical first look at the complex science of bolting. I found the first half of the book to be quite practical in familiarizing the reader with concepts that would be developed further in later sections. The author does a good job in giving the reader a look at several types of different design techniques, including the ones outlined by the german engineering society VDI. The book gives solid outlines to various design processes, but is not a textbook to tell you exactly how to design every joint. The reason for this is that bolted joints are extremely complex mechanical systems that are often simplified by quite conservative codified procedures. If the reader is looking for those codified design procedures, purchase books by the PVRC, ASME, etc. instead, but know that this book gives a wider perspective of the entire design process.

Bickford is the man.

Having read several books on the bolted joint, let me say that Bickford is the man. He's the father of bolted joint study. Don't waste your money on his other book which is a selection articles, this is the one to get.

I give it 4/5 because it is very light on shear joints and could be written in a more concise manner. Also, to fully understand bolted joints, the IFI Inch Fasteners Standards book is also needed.

Otherwise a totally solid intro to the bolted joint.

A Must For Design Engineers

This book covers all the fundamental issues related to bolts and bolted joints. It is very easy to read, and does not go too deeply into technical subjects, but gives the reader a full appreciation for the issues involved. As a materials engineer I appreciated the section on bolting materials. As a design engineer, I found the sections on designing bolted joints very helpful. As Plato expressed long ago, the wiser you are, the less you realize you know. After reading this book, design engineers not familiar with all the issues will likely not take bolts and bolted joints for granted.

After a tender courtship, Rachel and Kenji marry and have a daughter, but the birth of their healthy baby brings as much grief as joy, when they must give her up for adoption to prevent infection. The couple cope with the loss of their daughter and settle into a productive working life until Kenji tries to stop a quarantined U.S. soldier from beating up his girlfriend and is tragically killed in the subsequent fight. The poignant concluding chapters portray Rachel's final years after sulfa drugs are discovered as a cure, leaving her free to abandon Moloka'i and seek out her family and daughter. Beyond Kalaupapa

What a story about a difficult subject. I knew how Kalaupapa ends - 1946 the miracle drug is available and patients can be "paroled" after 6 negative tests. Thoughtful is how I'd describe the author's letting us in on how the people of Hawaii handled those who came down with this terrible disease. I was glued to this story, Rachel and Sister Catherine, Rachel and her husband, Rachel and her Ohana. Plus, there's a bit of Viktor Frankl here: not only "if it doesn't kill you, it makes you a better person," but also: grow where you're planted, as some might say. I am a Polio Survivor and have a personal glimpse into what had to have been going on in the patients' minds as they began life anew in Kalaupapa. The Pali is so majestic when looking down at it from the overlook in the uplands. A appreciated the realistically sensitive portrayal of now Saint Father Damien. My hope is that the peninsula remains "special" even after the few remaining patients move on because it is a special.

an very interesting, novel about the history of leprosy and a successful leper colony

This is an age old tale about the miserable lives that many disease-disabled people have endured, through millenia, due to social ignorance and lack of scientific ways to cure their medical maladies. In this historical novel, the reader is take to Hawaii, specifically to the leper colony of Moloka'i, where the main character becomes trapped in an infected body that exiles her to a life of severe discrimination and fear about her disease. Being separated from her family is only the first of many devastating situations, on the isolated Hawaiian island but she learns to create a sense of family among the inmates of the diseased community.

Over time, science and the socially-concerned take over the governing of the leper colony and some of the infected are cured of their disfiguring ailments, later returning to normal life within healthy communities. Some infected succumb to their disease and never regain their families and former lives. Throughout the plot, the heroine allows herself to become a subject for a scientific study and a possible cure for leprosy. Her actions become, in no small way, a means to eventually enact state laws that will financially, socially and emotionally support the colony, its inhabitants and the dedicated caregivers.

The author offers a superb description of the devastating effects of leprosy, not only physically, but mentally, as its victims go through the stages of the disease. The original inmates of the colony have learned to give up hope of ever again, becoming a part of a normal family; of having the resources to cure their disease; of being in exile; and languishing in the intellectual wasteland, as they wait for a painful, lonely death.

The characters are varied, the setting details are realistic and interesting and the story line is balanced with hope and despair, love and hate, joy and heartbreak, and the age-old struggle to not only cure diseases but to cure the general public's fear and loathing of those infected with such deadly illnesses. Even though leprosy has a modern cure and the world has generally accepted that the disease is not a lifelong sentence of suffering and death, the theme of the novel rings true today, since the "new" plagues are HIV-AIDS and Ebola, to name only two.

Although this novel would never win a big literary prize, the author offers much hope and dignity to those who have, or currently do, suffer from a life-threatening, highly contagious disease. Besides being a well-documented and interesting story about American history, this novel makes the reader feel that there is some justice in this world and that it can be earned by those who believe they can affect medical research and social attitudes, if even in some small way.

If you enjoy this novel, try The Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama, which also delves into the topic of leprosy, in WWII Japan era.

Excellent Story - Four and a half Stars

Alan Brennert’s Molokai is an extraordinary epic that begins in old Hawaii in 1891. When this isolated island chain finally came in contact with people from other lands, the population had no natural immunity to many of the new diseases brought to their shores. The native Hawaiians proved unusually susceptible to leprosy.

Molokai follows the fictional life of Rachel Kalama, a seven-year-old Hawaiian girl who contracts leprosy, through childhood, adolescence, adulthood and, eventually into old age. Taken from her home and family, she is forced into a cage on the bow of a ship along with other lepers and deported to the quarantined settlement of Kalaupapa on the island of Moloka'i. Yet Rachel grows up and finds friends family, life, love and happiness on the island, in addition to the difficulties and tragedies that we all face in life. She even falls in love and marries Kenji, a fellow patient. But the daughter she bears must immediately be given up for adoption to avoid infection.

Rachel’s life coincides with so much of the history of Hawaii: colonialism, the fall of the monarchy, and the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The book is rich with historical and cultural details. The author has researched the material well, drawing on historical accounts and weaving in traditional Hawaiian customs.

The book is a deeply moving account of the hardships borne by those who developed leprosy in Hawaii. With a vibrant cast characters, Moloka'i is the story of people who had so much taken from them but who also gained so much in the process. Rachel is a truly memorable character. Though leprosy may seem like an undesirable subject for a novel, Brennert's compassion transforms the book into a touching account of Rachel’s life. Brennert's style is easy to read. In almost every sense, this is a five-star book, with the exception of his average prose. Brennert's real strengths are his storytelling and character development, which more than make up for the prose. Moloka'i will take you on an emotional roller coaster.

Not what I was expecting and far better than I anticipated

Many readers know that John Steinbeck famously wrote almost all of "The Grapes of Wrath" in one draft in under a year. Perhaps as brilliant as that was it has tainted our image of his talent to assume he could produce some a masterpiece with such seeming ease. Shouldn't we instead be wondering how the same person could write repeated classics that all retain freshness and originality into the modern day. His craft is to tell stories in the simplest of language that lures us into thinking it's a simple story.

"East of Eden" is just such a trap. The story flows with such ease and fluidity that one floats through it enjoying each passage from the ever deepening plot. But as one progresses through the book I'd hope one might appreciate the same profound awakening that hit me. "He wait a minute, these are very nuanced and rich characters and this is one very special story about one side of real America absent cliche or sell out to perception or expectation".

For me I could almost feel Glen Ford or Henry Fonda reading the story aloud. Steinbeck tiptoes between idealism and reality which such delicate footsteps. He has a common touch and a the brilliance of keen insight into the human experience. A reader is rewarded with dialogue earnestly debating good and evil and a storyline that captures a late 19th century/early 20th century America this is as well depicted as I have experienced.

There is brotherhood, love, deceit, exploitation, guilt, deplorable morals and inspiring characters. And overall there is a story that I thankfully knew nothing about prior to turning the first page and will therefore reveal nada here. So this is probably more a celebration than a review and I hope others will forever equally enjoy it.

Lovely prose sometimes spoiled with ham-fisted allegory

I have mixed feelings about this book. It can be lovely, evocative, and honest, but also ham-fisted, redundant, and shallow.

By and far, the best parts were Steinbeck's descriptions of the Salinas Valley. These were like little prose poems of moments and places, seasons and rhythms. I have read one of the author's missions while writing this book was to record the region for his children so they would know every sensory detail of the valley. I think he accomplished this.

Beyond these love letters to a place, the book revolves around a couple families, torn apart and joined together by tragedies and triumphs of all kinds. Steinbeck cribs the plot devices of Cain and Abel--a jealous brother "kills" his sibling--and adds his own thoughts on free will versus inherited wickedness. And there is wickedness in this book. Some of the characters were so terrible, so despicable, so evil that it sometimes soured the book for me. On the other hand, there were characters who were quite fun to read about (especially Samuel Hamilton and Lee) and chapters about them helped me forget about the rotten ones.

I know Steinbeck considered this his best book. I know many people deeply adore and respect it. However, I really felt like it got far too preachy and obvious. Steinbeck has us go through the saga of fraternal conflict twice, through two generations, and by the time the first conflict is over, I was tired of the book. The second generation story just felt redundant. Some of the characters and dialogue felt very real and truthful to human nature, while others edged too far into stereotype and unbelievability. This opinion goes for the plot points, too.

As others have said, when Steinbeck is writing about the landscape of California and the family inspired by his own, he does lovely work. It's when he focuses on his (quite obvious and belabored) allegory that the book fails.

Many of us read the book Of Mice and Men during our early high school years. Some adored it, some loathed it, and some slept through the whole thing. If you are like me, you adored the tale. Due to this admiration for John Steinbeck's novel, I decided to continue down his line of work and read East of Eden. Steinbeck depicts an innovative version of Eden through his characters and their actions. These situations, and those who partake in them, arouse a deeper understanding of sin and the power of change within the reader. The novel enlightens the reader by showing them that we all have the power to choose what happens in our lives. The relentless struggle between "good and evil" can transform the individual, according to the novel, as long as she exercises her power to choose.
Steinbeck's Eden is filled with a vast array of characters. The novel begins with Samuel Hamilton and the Trask family. As the novel grows, so do the two families. The reader embarks on a journey down the lineage of the two families. Depicting the loves, losses, triumphs, and failures, the beloved, and the despised, characters go through. The reader will come to adore the able Samuel as well as despise the monstrous Cathy. Steinbeck depicts horrendous situations while still allowing light, wit, and love to shine. Steinbeck writes in such a manner that the reader cannot help but love the characters, and bear a deep sorrow for the losses experienced in the novel.
Steinbeck, with his choice of characters and innovative interpretation of Eden, has created a plot that was destined to be interesting. The characters, plot, diction, and dialogue give an awe filled escape from reality. Unfortunately, this escape is one that the reader has to deeply desire. East of Eden is not a book for a reader looking for an "easy" read. The novel provides a reader with a deep journey. I deeply enjoyed it, but I had to focus to embark on it. Therefore, if you are looking for an easy read, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a book with a deeper meaning that will provide you with vast entertainment, then go to your local bookstore and pick up a copy. The choice is yours.

I have read many testing books and this book surely has lots of material which is not covered elsewhere. However, the book frustrates you when you try out the examples or try to figure out what to do and what to leave out (theoretical). Those trying to learn things not offered in regular books can find this insightful.

Be warned that many ideas are not practically implementable - for example 18.10.6 - Bug seeding model where we deliberately insert bugs in code to estimate the # of defects. This is NEVER done in real life (my experience) since we have difficult time doing the actual project and eliminating the real bugs. The author does not warn you of this. There are many other cases where the author should warn you if its theoretical or practical some examples -
(1) Section 18.2.1 (Revised) Propagation Analysis Algorithm - Not possible in real software development with deadlines.
(2) 18.2.5 Revised Execution Analysis Algorithm

The author should have given the data and XLS in his blog (very difficult to locate) so that the readers can use the information. I vainly tried the example in 18.3.1 How to Calculate Influences on Performance and was so frustrated that he changed the columns between figure 18.2 and 18.3 and gives so much data in 6th decimal (making it useless for the readers when we are not able to follow).

On the positive side - there are a lot of insight in terms of reliability covered here. The references are very good and useful. It should have more stars if the XLS were provided or examples made more understandable.
