Canada's voice in the wilderness

George Grant has been one of my "heroes" ever since I read him in an alternative course to freshman English in college in the early 70's. Grant changed my life and forced me to look at the metaphyscial implications of the idea of progress, of morality as "values" (as though they were a commodity), and most of all, opened my eyes to the world of the great philosophers from Plato to Hegel. This book, the last one Grant published, is as collection of essays in which he shines through as always. Grant was a Christian Platonist who was influenced by Leo Strauss and Simone Weil. His philosophical conversation over the years was with Nietzsche and Heidegger, whom he regarded as having thought the implications of the modern project to its depths. Yet Grant says "NO" to Nietzsche and Heidegger, while at the same time recognizing the benifits of modern technology in terms of its reduction of human suffering. Grant never tires in showing how notions of justice in a technological society are no longer rooted in an overarching "given," a metaphysic to which humans are fitted for. The hubris of technology (a neologism of "making" and "knowing") has devalued life, Grant maintains, so that "qaulity" of life becomes the standard of deciding who should live and who need not live. Hence Grant is opposed both to abortion and euthanasia not to mention genocide in general. Grant's book is not easy. The essays have appeared in earlier forms and have been recrafted. Grant's language is evocative, but also very carefully crafted. His can appear to be a pessimist, but he claimed he was not. This book gives us further inklings of what he called "intimations of deprival" that have beset all who live within the horizons of the technological empire, which is just about everybody. If you want to read a North American philosopher who faced the times yet found reasons for rejecting the finality of this age's horizons, Grant is the one to read.

The meaning of technology and its impact on justice

For those who want to dig beneath the surface and begin to reflect on how technology is shaping us at the very core of who we are, this book is a must!
If you have been stirred by essays of Wendell Berry to begin to question the wisdom of technological "progress", then George Grant will lead you further. He is able to communicate clearly without using dense jargon, but do not be fooled: his words are carefully chosen and demand to be read carefully.
Grant himself has done a careful reading of Plato, Friederich Nietszche, Martin Heidegger, and Simone Weil. His understanding of these great thinkers will stimulate amateur philosophers to investigate these issues further. At the same time his interpretation of these thinkers will challenge the professionals, especially those who have bought into the post-modernist perspective.
If you care about understanding how technology has propelled many of us into living such dry banal lives in the sterility of suburbia, this book is a must read.
I read this book when it was first published over ten years ago. I have re-read it at least seven times since. Each time I read it, I see new things. It is a slim volume with less than 200 pages.
If you are concerned about the disappearance of a clear understanding of justice, then Grant will reveal some underlying principles that lie at the heart of modern technology -- a dynamo that is corroding the western tradition of justice.

Technology and the Fate of Modern Society

George Grant, is a subtle and penetrating thinker with regard to technology and the fate of modern society. In this slim volume, Grant in a series of essays details the need to find a way to think about technology, i.e., the way we view technology and its impact on society.
By discussing a diversity of thinkers such as Simone Weil, Nietsche, Plato and Heidegger as well as that on the issues of euthanasia and abortion, he has shown to us the historical fate of modern society which is infatuated with technology. The picture he painted is not pretty but I believe that one must have the courage to see historical reality as it is and not shy away from it. Only then, can we begin to look at ways to avoid the coming ruins of modern technological civilization.
All in all, a very important book for anyone who is concerned with the fate of modern society.

Hopscotching through time, each tale examines the father's death from the perspective of his young son, Roy. The first story, Ichthyology, introduces the young protagonist and his troubled father, a tax-dodging dentist and fisherman who ends up shooting himself on the deck of his fishing boat. Rhoda finds the 12-year-old boy bonding with his new stepmother, a pretty young woman his father married before the tragedy. In A Legend of Good Men, Roy imagines a fantastically violent rampage in which he does away with his mother's suitors, à la Odysseus and Telemachus. The novella, Sukkwan Island, is an increasingly suspenseful story of survival, in which a 13-year-old Roy and his father brave the elements for months in an isolated mountain cabin. A Groundbreaking Gasp-Out-Loud Work of Real Fiction

In the postscript to this astoundingly original book, David Vann quotes Grace Paley in saying that "every line in fiction has to be true. It has to be a distillation of experience more true to a person's life than any moment he or she has actually lived."

Through that definition, Legends of a Suicide is a true book. James Edward Vann - the author's father - did, indeed, kill himself when David was only 13. But the circumstances described here are that of mythology - a real-world event that is imagined, transformed, repackaged, reimagined. The book holds fast to the truth of the suicide and how it affected the author, even when it diverges significantly from the facts.

In ways, one can describe this book as a howl in the dark; the tentacles of the father's despairing act reach through the years and ensnare the author for decades. The book - opening and closing interweaving short stories and a novella - are mostly set in Ketchikan and the isolated Alaska woods.

What emerges is the portrait of a self-absorbed, clinically depressed, damaged man. At one point, the fictional-but-real father says, "I need the world animated and I need it to refer to me. I need to know that when a glacier shifts or a bear farts, it has something to do with me..."

Half-way through the book, there is a gasp-out-loud moment that will totally transform the relationship between the father, the son, and indeed, the reader. Everything is suddenly reconfigured and as the book takes form again, the reader begins to realize exactly how the suicide has affected the author. I will not reveal this spoiler, but it is one of the most astonishing feats I've seen in reimagined fiction. And although the reader understands that he or she is truly in a psychological wilderness, it does not take away from the truth of the experience.

There are hints of Tobias Wolff and even Hemingway in the author's control of the style, but make no mistake: this is a very authentic new voice. At the end of the day, it's about a vulnerable son who does not have the mental apparatus to deal with an emotionally ill father who desperately seeks to stay on top of his life while falling through the crevices. It will transport you to unchartered territories. The friend who recommended this book told me, "THIS is why we read." I wholeheartedly agree.

Harsh environment leads to tragedy (3.75*s)

This book of five short stories and one novella - 75% of the book - is an effort by the author to shed some light on suicide generally, but more specifically on that of his father some thirty years prior. Because of the autobiographical intent of the book, it is somewhat unfortunate that the author included strange, inconsistent twists in some of the stories that confuse and dilute the effort. However, little doubt is left concerning the psychic pain surrounding suicide - its haunting after effects, not to mention the mental deterioration leading to it.

The main story is set in a totally isolated fiord, surrounded by steep mountains, in southeastern Alaska where Jim, a lapsed dentist and twice divorced, has prevailed upon his thirteen-year-old son, Roy, now living in California with his mother, to live for a year in an A-frame cabin. It quickly becomes evident that they are almost totally unprepared for such a life; they lack both knowledge of primitive survival techniques and essential tools and supplies. Within days of being flown in on an amphibian plane, a bear breaks in and devastates their cabin, ruining most of their food supply. That is only a small sample of what the harsh, rocky, wet, and cold landscape suggests is to come.

Beyond the upsetting environmental surprises, little did Roy understand the psychological depths to which his father's life had sunk. His life had been spiraling downward for some time, with two failed marriages, numerous affairs, a failed commercial fishing venture, and a dentistry career left behind. Roy was not ready for the nighttime crying and talking of his father, which was covered with false cheerfulness in the mornings. The entire scenario was unsustainable, bursting with tension, and it all finally exploded with a devastating death. It quite literally took months for a rescue, but not before tremendous physical hardship and agonizing self-admonishments and rationalizations were endured.

The author does play with facts and no doubt employs much exaggeration, yet most of that is more than justified in trying to explain suicide. Reconstruction of thought processes may be about as close one can get to understanding suicide. Nonetheless, the reader is left wondering how Jim arrived at his mental situation beyond his more obvious setbacks. Mental states and actions do have a large social component.

The saga of life at the cabin is a little repetitious, but is fairly gripping; Roy and his father seemed to be on the verge of disaster on a daily basis. The other, shorter stories are not without interest, despite their somewhat dissonant aspects. Beyond suicide, this book would make any rational person have second thoughts about embarking on a life in the wilds of Alaska on no more than a whim.

A Death in the Family

Basically 6 short stories focusing on Roy and his relationship with his father, and the huge shadow his suicide casts on him. The main story, 'Sukkwan Island' has them together on an ill thought out adventure break in an isolated cabin on an Alaskan island and explores how Jim would react and respond to his sons suicide.
This is a poignant book on an extremely difficult subject, and Vann -over the span of the novel- exorcises the demons that must haunt the survivors of a suicide in the family;something the aurthor has experienced personally.
'Legend of a suicide' is a well written, absorbing book but the sudden change of emphasis and plot in the 'Sukkwan' chapter does throw you off the scent you picked up in the opening 2 chapters and resume with in the closing 3 chapters, so it is worth begining this book in the knowledge that it is basically 6 stories about suicide and its aftermath.
A brave book that acts as a kind of antidote to contemplation and enacting of suicide that permeate so many literary works-Hemingway, Mishima and Styron's spring instantly to mind.Well
'Legend of a suicide' is well worth a read.

About the Author

Robin "Roblimo" Miller started writing professionally in 1983 as a freelance reporter and feature writer in Baltimore, Maryland. He first wrote about Linux in 1997, and by 1998 he was a full-time Linux user, working as a reporter, columnist, and editor for Andover News Network, which later become the OSTG (Open Source Technology Group) division of VA Software.

Roblimo, as he has been known online since the mid-1990s, was one of the first reporters to cover the Linux phenomenon. He has spoken at computing and Internet conferences in Saudi Arabia, Mexico, India, Trinidad, Jordan, and at least a dozen U.S. states. He's been "the computer expert" for the award-winning Rise and Shine morning show on Baltimore's WJZ TV, and has been a guest on many radio and several cable TV talk shows.

Point & Click Linux! is Roblimo's second book. His first, The Online Rules of Successful Companies, was published by FT Prentice Hall in 2002. He has written over 2000 articles for various newspapers, magazines, and Web sites on topics including Linux (of course!), child support, college campus drug use, metallurgy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), software development, telemarketing, crime prevention, tax policy, online business, TV news reporting, taxi driving, and political shenanigans.

Before becoming a full-time writer and editor, Roblimo worked as a limo owner/driver (hence "Roblimo"), taxi driver, electronics technician, soldier, and auto mechanic. He is currently editor in chief of OSTG, and lives with his wife, the artist Deborah Miller, in Bradenton, Florida.

We all want our computers to "just work." We want to view Web sites, exchange email, create letters and other printed material, do our book-keeping, and perform other basic computer tasks without worrying about viruses, spam, Web popup ads, system crashes or high program license fees.

Linux is the low-cost key to trouble-free computing. It's a little different from Windows or Mac, so you'll need to learn some new tricks to use it, but they are not hard tricks, and they won't take long to learn. In return for that little bit of learning, you'll be able to perform everyday computing tasks rapidly and easily without worrying about viruses, worms or spyware. In fact, after you have Linux installed and your favorite programs set up, you won't need to think about your computer at all. You'll be able to concentrate on what you're doing with it, whether you're creating a budget spreadsheet for your business, creating a family newsletter or downloading and listening to your favorite music.

This book and the instructional DVD video inside the front cover are based on MEPIS Linux. The SimplyMEPIS CD inside the back cover includes all the software you need to surf the Web, read and write email, do sophisticated word processing, make slide presentations, manipulate spreadsheets, upload and edit images from digital cameras and scanners, create Web sites, enjoy music or videos, play many hours' worth of entertaining games, and generally do what you and most other people expect a personal computer to do.

About the Point & Click Linux! DVD - It's not a single hour-long video, but a series of "bite-sized" short tutorials. Each one focuses on a specific function or program. The video tutorials contain most of the information in the printed book, but show you how to do things instead o telling you how to do them.

The DVD plays in standard NTSC (U.S. format) DVD players, and in computers equipped with DVD drives. Check this book's companion Web site, PointAndClickLinux.com, for added and updated videos.

Proprietary Windows software equivalent to the programs on your SimplyMEPIS CD, plus the current version of Windows itself, would cost at least $1500 or more. And if the included software doesn't cover all your needs, the MEPIS servers offer hundreds of other useful programs you can download right away and start using without paying another cent. Adventurous souls can experiment with any one of thousands of free non-MEPIS programs provided by the worldwide, volunteer-run Debian project with only a few mouse clicks—and can delete any programs that don't work out with another few clicks.

(Note that when you delete a MEPIS or Debian program, it is 100% gone. There is no "residue" or "registry crud" leftover as there often is in Windows when you try to delete a program you no longer want.)

While this book focuses on MEPIS, there is an appendix dedicated to other popular Linux distributions, because Linux is about choice, not about locking you into one way of doing things. You'll also be happy to know that the programs described in the following pages and on the included DVD video work the same way no matter which Linux distribution you choose. Even if you start with MEPIS and later move to another flavor of Linux, your learning time will not have been wasted.

Disapointing

I think this book has the right idea but it is not executed well. I have some computer knowledge and as advertised the CD did boot. But the CD was not complete or was defective and some of the programs, open office for one, just would not boot properly. I installed the Linux version that came with the CD but without the main applications, the install was worthless. Also, I tried for many hours to connnect to my ISP using the KPPP and although they were helpful, I was unable to connect. The book was not at all helpful in my efforts to troubleshoot the problem. I even purchased a new modem that is Linux compatable ($50). Then I tried changing the script using the old hayes commands and was able to dial and make contact but it just could not engage the handshake. I then contacted othters who had purchase Point and Click Linux and they were having the same problems. Yes, after many hours and even days, this book and the Linux version on its CD still is not working and it is, to me, worthless. Don't buy it if you want to install Linux and use it productively unless you are very knowledgeable with Operating Systems.

Desktop Linux is Here at Last!

"Point & Click Linux" makes it clear that, in Warren Woodford's MEPIS, a truly functional desktop Linux has finally been achieved. In both the book and the DVD the author comes across as a thoroughly and disarmingly competent doofus who finds using MEPIS so much fun and so satisfying that he can't refrain from sharing it with the world. If this book and MEPIS had been available when I first started trying to use Linux six years ago I would probably now believe that only other operating systems cause frustration.

As the title implies, the book's emphasis is on using Linux through its graphical interface (KDE) and on getting useful things done quickly and easily, not on the gritty details of just how Linux works "under the hood". The DVD covers essentially the same material in almost the same way as the book, and thus provides effective reinforcement of the book's text. In fact, people who learn better by seeing and doing than by just reading will find the DVD an immense help.

There are people who appear to enjoy learning by trial and error; they probably should not bother with this book. Those of us who hate trial and error for its grievous waste of time and energy will welcome this book's guiding us past at least 90% of the available errors.

MEPIS CD won't boot and exe won't run. I paid for the book and CDs, but the linuxtracker.org site implies cheapskates are listed for free downloads (and my 16mb/s pipe downloads from the MEPIS server at 1mb/s).

Purely accidental

I bought the Kindle version of this book totally by accident man I was pissed. Then I read the darn thing and to my surprise I enjoyed it actually I have read it twice. I highly recommend it! I felt money well spent. Amd good job to the author

About the Author
Dr. Debra L. Nelson is the CBA Associates Professor of Business Administration and Professor of Management at Oklahoma State University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington, where she was the recipient of the R. D. Irwin Dissertation Fellowship Award. Dr. Nelson is the author of over 70 journal articles focusing on organizational stress management, gender differences at work, and positive organizational behavior. Dr. Nelson's research has been published in the ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT EXECUTIVE, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, MIS QUARTERLY, ORGANIZATIONAL DYNAMICS, JOURNAL OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR, and other journals. In addition, she is coauthor/coeditor of several books, including POSITIVE ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR (Sage, 2007); UNDERSTANDING ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR (South-Western, 2008); GENDER, WORK STRESS, AND HEALTH (APA, 2002); ADVANCING WOMEN IN MANAGEMENT (Blackwell, 2002); and PREVENTIVE STRESS MANAGEMENT IN ORGANIZATIONS (APA, 1997). Dr. Nelson has also served as a consultant to several organizations including AT&T, American Fidelity Assurance, Sonic, State Farm Insurance Companies, and Southwestern Bell. She has presented leadership and preventive stress management seminars in a host of organizations, including Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Conoco, and Oklahoma Gas and Electric. Dr. Nelson also serves on the editorial review boards of the JOURNAL OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR, LEADERSHIP, and the JOURNAL OF LEADERSHIP AND ORGANIZATION STUDIES.

Dr. James Campbell (Jim) Quick is John and Judy Goolsby Distinguished Professor in the Goolsby Leadership Academy, Distinguished Professor in the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, and Professor of Organizational Behavior in the Department of Management, College of Business at The University of Texas at Arlington. He earned an M.B.A. and a Ph.D. at the University of Houston. He completed postgraduate courses in behavioral medicine (Harvard Medical School) and combat stress (University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio). Dr. Quick is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the American Psychological Association, and the American Institute of Stress. Dr. Quick's and his brother's signature theory is preventive stress management, now in the APA Dictionary of Psychology (2007). Dr. Quick has over 100 books, book chapters, journal articles, and clinical monographs in 10 languages. Dr. Quick's awards and recognitions include Beta Gamma Sigma and Phi Beta Delta honor societies membership; The Maroon Citation (Colgate University Alumni Corporation, 1993); 2002 Harry and Miriam Levinson Award (American Psychological Foundation); and a Presidential Citation (American Psychological Association, 2001). Quick won the 2007-2008 Honors College Outstanding Faculty Award and 2009 Award for Distinguished Record of Research at UT Arlington. Colonel Quick, United States Air Force Reserve (Ret.) was Distinguished Visiting Professor of Psychology, 59th Medical Wing (1999) and Visiting Scholar, United States Military Academy at West Point (2007). His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star. He currently serves by appointment from Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on the Defense Health Board's Psychological Health External Advisory Subcommittee.

Organizational Behavior, Science, the real world, and you

This book is a prime example of how the simplest concepts can be turned into a pseudo academic phraseology in order to look important and to sell a lot of textbooks. The views and perspectives are at best early Newtonian with an understanding of "organizations as clockwork with neat, precise, interrelated functioning." There is no clear distinction between Management and Leadership anywhere in the almost 800 pages, and organizational cultures apparently can only been seen from a Strong, Fit, or Adaptive Perspectives. New insights from neuroscience are conveniently left aside, most case studies, and real life examples pertain mostly to the study of OD and to OB only on the periphery. Almost every page oozes painfully meaningless and relativistic sentences like: "Formal and informal groups form in organizations for different reasons" and "The employee-boss relationship is one of mutual dependence." Really? $200 for ill-stated phrases from the last century.
If the suggested structure of the book is Science - You - The Real World, why would this seemingly important sequence not be reflected in the title? Whoever defines Science in the 21st Century as the "Mastery of objective knowledge = truth", has no clue what is happening in the new sciences and should not advertise their impaired understanding by means of writing textbooks. To be sure, the authors seem to possess a large body of knowledge as they frequently stray into history, but one wonders where the link is to the topics at hand. When Frederick Taylor (1900) is introduced as having a profound influence on the early years of the study of organizational behavior, which really did not even get started until the early 1950 one must question the validity of this book.

Heavy on typos, light on functional information

This text was a let down in many areas. I purchased this text for a 300 level organizational behavior class and was surprised at how much it lacked new research and instead was built around studies and ideas that have largely evolved in the I/O field. I have taken other I/O classes and would recommend other texts, as this one clearly is not the best. Furthermore, this text is FULL OF TYPOS!!! One of many being that Mark Zuckerberg (founder of FB) is spelled "Mark Zuckerman" throughout the text. I purchased this text along with the older sixth edition, and the only difference between the two is that the 7th edition has updated case studies, THATS IT!!! You would likely be able to pass your class with the older edition, which costs $5 here on Amazon. Overall this text was a disappointment and a perfect example of the publisher trying to sell a "new edition" that contains virtually no new information.

Organizational Behavior

I thought this book was great. I have read a couple reviews by officianado's who say that the authors are using old references. To this I say garbage! There have been so many changes in how business has been done in the last 4 years of financial turmoil that I felt all the reference material was great. As a matter of fact, I copied the pages out of the back of the book with all the references so I could circle the article names and do research on the material used. I found the references helpful and augmented my learning process. I look at what I knew 8 weeks ago and what I have learned and would say Thank You to Nelson and Quick for their diligence in writing a good book.
