The Price of Privilege: How Parental Pressure and Material Advantage Are Creating a Generation of Disconnected and Unhappy Kids, by Madeli

In recent years, numerous studies have shown that bright, charming, seemingly confident and socially skilled teenagers from affluent, loving families are experiencing epidemic rates of depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders—rates higher than in any other socioeconomic group of American adolescents. Materialism, pressure to achieve, perfectionism, and disconnection are combining to create a perfect storm that is devastating children of privilege and their parents alike.

In this eye-opening, provocative, and essential book, clinical psychologist Madeline Levine explodes one child-rearing myth after another. With empathy and candor, she identifies toxic cultural influences and well-intentioned, but misguided, parenting practices that are detrimental to a child's healthy self-development. Her thoughtful, practical advice provides solutions that will enable parents to help their emotionally troubled "star" child cultivate an authentic sense of self.

From Publishers Weekly
A practicing psychologist in Marin County, Calif., Levine counsels troubled teens from affluent families, and finds it paradoxical that wealth—which can open the door to travel and other enriching opportunities—can produce such depressed, anxious, angry and bored teenagers. After comparing notes with colleagues, she concluded that consumerism too often substitutes for the sorts of struggles that produce thoughtful, happy people. If objects satisfy people, then they never get around to working on deeper issues. The teen years are supposed to be a time for character building. Avoiding this hard work with the distraction of consumer toys can produce "vacant," "evacuated" or "disconnected" teens, Levine believes. She is particularly useful when explaining common parenting dilemmas, like the difference between being intrusive and being involved, between laying down rules and encouraging autonomy. Alas, while Levine pitches to the educated moms, since they do much of the actual child-rearing, she may be preaching to the choir. Those who need her most may be too busy shopping to pick up such a dire-looking volume. Still, school guidance counselors should be happy to have this clear, sensitive volume on their bookshelves. From Scientific American
Wandering among suburban estates, sports clubs and prep schools are overlooked children of a perplexed generation. Their lives overflow with abundance and praise, yet ironically, the mask of apparent health and success may hide a gloomy world of emptiness, anxiety and anger. Strangely, argues Madeline Levine, a clinical psychologist practicing in Marin County, California, the nation’s latest group of at-risk kids comes from affluent, well-educated families. Despite advantages, these children experience disproportionately high rates of clinical depression, substance abuse, anxiety, eating disorders and self-destructive (even self-mutilating) behaviors, according to various studies. Based on criteria from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Levine says these children "are exhibiting epidemic rates of emotional problems beginning in junior high school and accelerating throughout adolescence." One may brush off these youngsters as overindulged products of wealthy, narcissistic parents. But Levine says many of these kids are really ill. They suffer from a weak sense of self, often struggling to fill inner emptiness with objects and praise. Too often they know something is wrong and grope desperately for help yet fail to escape a downward spiral. Could it be, Levine wonders, that privilege, high expectations, competitive pressure and parental overinvolvement yield toxic rather than protective effects? Levine explores such issues as social isolation, the fine line between parental underinvolvement and overindulgence, and the perverse role of money and material goods in creating false promises of fulfillment. Yearning for outward approval, adolescents are particularly vulnerable to the delusion that wealth causes happiness. In many cases, a rude awakening occurs only after many years of anxiety and depression. Levine’s writing is surprisingly reflective and interesting. A constructive therapist, she offers practical guidelines and parenting strategies for those struggling with troubled teens. The advice is useful to any parent of any income level and includes ways to foster healthy autonomy, impulse control and sense of self. Levine emphasizes the importance of discipline, monitoring and limit setting as ways to encourage kids to construct healthy "inner" homes. More important, parents must "stand on their own two feet" before expecting their children to stand on theirs—noting that many parents scold their children for social behaviors that they themselves cannot manage, such as substance abuse and lack of self-discipline or self-assertion. Parents must strive to get their own inner homes in order before they can expect kids to straighten out theirs.

Richard Lipkin

From Booklist
Recent studies have shown that 22 percent of upper-middle-class adolescent girls (three times the national rate) suffer from clinical depression--a stark illustration of the old saw that money doesn't buy happiness. Psychologist Levine draws on clinical research, hundreds of case studies, and 25 years of treating troubled adolescents from well-to-do families to explore the rise in mental and emotional disorders among privileged youth. Levine offers portraits of adolescents from homes of parental involvement and material advantage in which the children nonetheless suffer from addictions, anxiety and eating disorders, depression, and self-destructive behavior. Levine makes the case for why these young people are as much "at risk" as those from lower economic backgrounds and how the culture of affluence can stifle self-development. She offers advice on effective techniques to reduce pressure from parents to succeed in school and to heighten adolescent autonomy and self-discipline. In this insightful book, Levine eschews the temptation to dismiss problems of privileged teens as overindulgence. Vanessa Bush

Where was this book when I needed it 5 or 10 years ago?
By Paul Allaer
I picked this book up almost by accident. But boy, am I glad I did. In "The Price of Privilege" (246 pages), author Madeline Levine, an accomplished psychologist who excels in dealing with troubled teenagers, examines the dangers and effects of teenagers growing up in an affluent environment. ("Affluent" is defined as a household earning $120,000 and more.)

I have to say that I was blown away by the observations in this book, even if, thankfully, I certainly have not experienced the worst-case scenarios described in this book with my own kids, who are now 19 and 16. Among many other things, Levine explains how "rewarding" kids by promising material things ("if you get an "A" on your test, I will buy you X or Y") has a long-term negative effect on kids. Levine also goes into depth about internal vs. external motivation, and why praise is often "bad" warmth for kids. As to "chasing perfection", Levine observes that "the pursuit of perfection is a diversion from the messiness of real life". So true! The main proposition made by the author is that, while of course it is important that we put our kids in a position to get good grades, even more important is that we help our kids with building their inner "self", which will prepare them for the long term. Reason why overinvolvement in our kids' lives is actually counterproductive.

I cannot emphasize enough what a wonderful job Levine does in describing the dangers of putting too much pressure on our kids. Which does not mean that she endorses a "slacker" attitude either. This book is about how we can best prepare our affluent kids for the long term. And it's not like the author is making a hypothetical or theoretical or academic case, giving ample real life evidence from her own practice and from studies around the country. I certainly recognized mistakes I have made, which I now wish I could've avoided, making me wonder wishfully, where was this book when I really needed it 5 or 10 years ago...

A compassionate and intelligent book
By Livia Polanyi
The author writes with empathy and insight about the 2 partners in the parenting dance: the children and the parents. She concentrates on the problems that children of competitive, professional affluent parents encounter as they try to find their way to adulthood. Rather too much about mother and too little about father for my taste and certainly not even a wave in the direction of gay parents. The particular parenting challenges faced by affluent parents of color also remain remarkably unaddressed. So a 4-star not a 5.

Praise for Blow-Up and Other Stories:

"[Cortazar] is a unique storyteller. He can induce the kind of chilling unease that strikes like a sound in the night."
—Time

"Julio Cortazar is a stunning writer. It is difficult to imagine how he could improve as a writer of short stories."
—The Christian Science Monitor

"A glittering showcase for a daring talent . . . Julio Cortazar is a dazzler."
—William Hogan, San Francisco Chronicle

"A first-class literary imagination at work."
—The New York Times Book Review

"Cortazar displays throughout his stories the ability to elevate them above the condition of those gimmicky tales which depend for effect soley on a twist ending. His genius here lies in the knack for constructing striking, artistically 'right' subordinate circumstances out of which his fantastic and metaphysical whimsies appear normally to spring."

A marvelous collection of short stories -- but what makes them so is not easy to explain
By Odysseus
This book was my first experience with reading Cortazar. From the first story on, the excitement of encountering a new (to me) brilliant writer went through me like an electric shock. The book injected an excitement and alertness into what otherwise might have been a sluggish weekend.

I have found, however, that explaining the basis of this excitement to others is not easy. It comes down to the difficulty of explaining what it is that makes great writers truly great -- an elusive insight.

Part of it is simple virtuosity; Cortazar possesses that which also distinguishes the writing of other greats such as Nabokov and Proust: that facility with language, the ability to find and to manipulate exactly the right words, to create a precise, vivid image, and to make music out of prose. (Note: I could perceive his virtuosity even though I read this book as an English translation.)

But it goes beyond virtuosity. If Cortazar wrote about ideas to which I was indifferent, the writing would not matter to me. But his stories inspire those flashes of recognition that make reading exciting; he creates those "aha" moments through his ability to present a feeling or situation that you recognize on some level, even if it's one that never previously made it out of your subconscious and which you might not have thought to remark upon, had not Cortazar dug it up for you.

From the general to the specific: This is a collection of short stories, most of which contain an element of the fantastic. Some of the flashes of recognition that I mention above are recognitions of mundane, daily feelings, but others are not. Cortazar seems to have ready access as well to our subconscious fears and to our dreams.

To take but a few cases in point:

One story involves a brother and sister who share a large, old wooden house, once owned by their great grandparents. At one point in the story, they hear voices and commotion from another part of the house. They bolt the doors, shut off that section, and confine themselves to living in the front part of the house. It's all left quite mysterious: Cortazar never explains who "they" are, who have taken over part of the house. But someting about this story rings eerily true; it's that bizarre combination of vivid, mundane reality, and unexplained phenomena, and illogical reactions to those phenomena, that characterize dreams.

Another example is a story in which a young girl goes to live with distant relatives in their country house for a summer. The house has a tiger roaming the rooms, but let's put that aside: what is remarkable about the story is Cortazar's ability to bring the scene to life, of an urbanite or suburbanite who is new to this comparatively relaxed environment. In one small, but typically rendered scene, the main character finds a bug crawling in an antiquated wash basin. She flicks at it, it curls into a ball, and she easily washes it down with running water. This is classic Cortazar; with a few well-chosen sentences, he puts you in that world: a world where the reader senses the sunlight through the house, the smell of pollen in the air, the renewed emphasis on the freshness of vegetables at the local market, and the ease with such inconveniences as older plumbing and intrusions by bugs are encountered.

Comparison with other writers is a bit unfair, because Cortazar has a voice all of his own. But in case it's helpful to you, Cortazar's precise prose reminded me a bit of Nabokov, his sense of wonder and magic recalled Steven Millhauser, and his trafficking in paradoxes a bit like Borges. But he's not quite like any of them: his prose focuses less than Borges on logical contradictions, and is more weighted toward precisely rendering sensory images.

Several of the stories are outstanding. My favorites (in addition to the two mentioned above: "House Taken Over", and "Bestiary") included:

Axolotls -- in which the narrator identifies very closely with an exotic amphibian species on his trips to the zoo.

A Yellow Flower -- an encounter with a sort of reincarnation gone awry

Continuity of Parks -- a very economical, very short story with an eerie, paradoxical twist

The Night Face Up -- a story in which reality and dreams are very difficult to distinguish

Cortazar is a master of the short story form. I would recommend him to anyone who likes the works of Borges, Millhauser, Nabokov, or Bruno Schulz.

Blow-Up and Other Stories
By Guttersnipe Das
I ready many collections of short stories and I often find that they are like pop albums: a few catchy numbers up front followed by fillers, repeats and instrumental versions. But every one of these stories is entirely interesting, including "The Distances" which I admit I didn't understand at all, even the second time through.

Many of these stories exist in the territory of terror and awe, but the three I liked best were all occasions of sustained compassion, and each revolved around a death. "At Your Service" is about a paid mourner who ends up grieving for real. "The Gates of Heaven" is about the death of a dancing girl. The novella "The Pursuer", based on the last days of Charlie Parker, is so convincing that I fell for it hook, line and sinker and believed I was reading an actual memoir, that he must have actually sat in a Paris hotel room with a ranting naked Charlie Parker. This novella is also a meditation on genius, which unfortunately does absolutely nothing to exempt one from ordinary misery.

If you enjoy this, make sure you read `Cronopios and Famas', Cortazar's playful eccentric book of tiny stories and prose poems - there's nothing like it.

Though I enjoyed these stories which are rich in ideas
By Janet K. Fine
Though I enjoyed these stories which are rich in ideas, and the use of magic realism to some extent, I always had the feeling that I would enjoy them more if I could read them in their original language - Spanish.

Still, because Julio Corta'zar is a very famous Argentinian author I am glad to have an opportunity to read him.

His writing style is much like a conversation with him
By Phil Kessler
For a first book, Conley has blown me out of the water with this one. His writing style is much like a conversation with him. I've had the pleasure of both meeting him in person and interviewing him for a podcast ([...]). So, full disclosure, he gave me a copy of his book. It was already on my wish list to be bought and read. That said...

Conley takes the reader through a step by step process to better understanding of both themselves and how magic really works. By taking the time to do the exercises in this book the novice practitioner and the experienced magician will learn to better focus and attune themselves for a magical practice that can be used in their daily lives, not just on those high holy days or special muckity-muck occasions. She never figured that the guy she met at a party would be famous. Yes, she broke into his room to sit quietly and read, but she never knew that the perfect guy, one Ash Martin that she met that night could change her life forever.
Things began well between them and for once in her life; she felt that something was going right for her. When she finds out his big secret, all she can wonder is if their relationship can survive his fame?
With his introduction into her life, it brings back the one person she fears more than any other, her mother. Maybe his fame wasn't the only problem in their burgeoning relationship.

Very YA High School level
By Hopeful
3 stars rating from me because I dislike when the description is lacking. It should have stated the fact of a few things. Child abuse, high school romance etc.

Good storyline , Decent
Good hero/heroine, okay but very young
Sex level, not detailed only suggestion to it very few times
Graphic language, none that I can remember
No cliffhanger

I probably wouldn't have read it if I had known the ages of the couple, a little too young for me and I love more spice. The author should have given us more information about the read. I love giving an author a chance when I see no one has reviewed their story. Please in the future give a full honest description so you receive better reviews.

Lectures on Ethics (The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant), by Immanuel Kant

This volume contains four versions of the lecture notes taken by Kant's students of his university courses in ethics given regularly over a period of some thirty years. The notes are very complete and expound not only Kant's views on ethics but many of his opinions on life and human nature. Much of this material has never before been translated into English. As with other volumes in the series, there are copious linguistic and explanatory notes and a glossary of key terms.

KANT’S “PRE-CRITICAL” LECTURES TO STUDENTS ON VARIOUS ETHICAL SUBJECTS
By Steven H Propp
Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a German philosopher who is perhaps the founder of "modern" philosophy, with his focus on epistemology (theory of knowledge); he wrote many books, such as Critique of Pure Reason, Critique of Practical Reason, Critique of Judgement, Prolegomena to Any Future Metaphysics, Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone, On History, Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime, etc.

These lectures---delivered probably in the 1775-1780 period, before he published the Critique of Pure Reason in 1781---are based on the notes taken by his students.

He states in the first lecture, “Philosophy is either theoretical or practical. The one concerns itself with knowledge, the other with the conduct of beings possessed of a free will. The one has Theory, the other Practice for its object---and it is the object which differentiates them. There is another distinction of philosophy into speculative and practical… the difference is not one of form, but of the object… The object of practical philosophy is conduct; that of theoretical cognition. Practical philosophy… is thus the philosophy which provides rules for the proper use of our freedom, irrespective of particular applications of it.” (Pg. 1-2)

He observes, “If… the reason why I ought not to lie were that God had forbidden it, because it pleased Him to do so, then it would follow that He might have refrained from forbidding it, had He so willed… I ought not to lie, not because God has forbidden it, but because lying is evil in itself. All morality rests on this, that we do what we do on account of the inner character of the act itself. Consequently what gives rise to morality is not the act, but the disposition from which its performance springs.” (Pg. 22)

He suggests, “To honour God is to obey His commandments with a willing heart, not to sing songs of praises to Him. An upright man who strives from an inner impulse to give expression to the moral law on account of the inner goodness of such action, who keeps God’s commandments with a willing heart, such a one honours God.” (Pg. 41)

He states, “It is not happiness, therefore, which is the chief ground of impulse to all duties; and accordingly, to try to make another happy against his will is to do him wrong. It is an act of violence to force another to be happy in one’s own way, though that is a pretext used, for example, by the upper classes in their dealings with their dependents.” (Pg. 51)

He argues, “The outstanding characteristic of natural religion is its simplicity. Its theology is such that the least intelligent among us can grasp it as completely as the most thoughtful and speculative… Religion and morality must go hand in hand. The philosophers of old did not appreciate this… The basis of religion must, therefore, be morality.” (Pg. 81) He adds, “Religion stands in no need of any speculative study of God.” (Pg. 82) And “Our entire conduct is religious if every one of our activities is accompanied by religion. Inner religion thus constitutes the whole of religion.” (Pg. 82)

He observes, “prayers are not to be regarded as a special way of serving God, but only as a means of awakening within us the spirit of devotion. We do not serve God with words, ceremonies and gestures; we serve Him only by actions which reflect our devotion to Him. Prayer trains us to act aright… We must divest it of all practical goodness to arrive at the purest concept of prayer, which is then seen to be good as a means. If, then, prayer has no higher value than that of a means to an end, it cannot be regarded as a peculiar service of God and intrinsically good.” (Pg. 100-101)

He says, “God has placed us on the stage of this world, provided us with all the materials for our welfare and with freedom to use them as we please, and everything depends on how men divide these benefits among themselves. Of this task men doubtless make a sorry mess. Let us then accept the benefits of life as we have received them, let us be satisfied with God’s universal wisdom and care and not allow misery and misfortune to weigh upon us.” (Pg. 145-146)

He explains, “Rights are determined in law. Now law indicates what actions are necessary from authority or compulsion, while ethics is concerned with actions necessitated by the inner obligation which springs from the rights of others in so far as they are not compulsory.” (Pg. 211)

He contends, “so far as animals are concerned, we have no direct duties. Animals are not self-conscious and are there merely as a means to an end. That end is man. We can ask, ‘Why do animals exist?’ But to ask, ‘Why does man exist?’ is a meaningless question. Our duties towards animals are merely indirect duties towards humanity.” (Pg. 239)

He concludes in the last lecture, “The ultimate destiny of the human race is the greatest moral perfection, provided that it is achieved through human freedom, whereby alone man is capable of the greatest happiness. God might have made men perfect and given to each his portion of happiness. But happiness would not then have been derived from the inner principle of the world, for the inner principle of the world is freedom.” (Pg. 252)

To those who know Kant primarily as a “heavyweight” philosophy of epistemology, these lectures may seem revelatory. They are certainly vastly illuminating for anyone studying Kant’s philosophy and its development.
