About the Author
In just four years, Melinda Coss took cold process soap making from a hobby in her kitchen to large industrial premises where her team made superb natural soaps and toiletries for well known UK stores, as well as supplying exclusive hotels in the UK and in France. She has also helped set up soap making units in rural Tanzania and in South Africa, and has written two internationally published books on soap making: The Handmade Soap Book and Gourmet Soaps Made Easy, both published by New Holland. She now runs soap making courses in London and France.

Meh... Incorrect recipes abound. There are better books out there.

While the book itself is lovely, there are some errors and it's just not possible to make the soaps, creams, etc like the pictures show with the given directions. Colors aren't even in the same rhelm and even an experienced soapmaker (which I am) would be hard pressed to get the results in the pictures as described as I believe they're heavily photoshopped. This is not to say they can't be achieved, but these details are left out for the new soapmaker. When I got this book several years ago, I adored it as I was just beginning in soap making, however I had many problems with getting well emulsified creams, lotions, etc with her given ewax amounts. I also had soaps that were way too cleansing. For example, in one cream recipe she writes for 32 gm of butters/oils total and only 4 gm ewax and 2gm cetyl alcohol. This is definitely not enough ewax and was the reason my creams never stayed emulsified for any length of time with her recipes. The amount of emulsifier should almost always be 25% of your oils portion. Now I know the soap recipes are meh, but they do 'sound' lovely. If you love the idea of using extreme specialty oils for personal use (these would be way to expensive to ever make into sellable items), this might be nice, however many of the recipes have oils like 'watermelon', baobab, etc that are very spendy and not easy to come by for an authentic version. She does give alternatives in some recipes, but you're left feeling like you're missing out if you aren't using the original stated. As far as scenting any of these products, you will not get any scent in your soap at her recommended ratios. While many of the blends are lovely, her amounts are minuscule and don't come through the cold process at all, especially any that contain citrus which isn't mentioned at all. Citrus in general is wasted in cold process unless you use 10x or 5x orange, lemon, or litsea cubeba.

This is a great book. I have Ms Cross's other two books, but this is the best. There is something in it for every soap maker. I have made two of the recipes and I am eager to try the Green Clay and Oatmeal; to compare her Dead Sea Mud bar with mine, etc. If you are experienced in soap making I highly recommend this book.

Beautiful pictures. Nice recipes, I have tried a few. There are a few recipes with ingredients that I don't think you can get in the United States. But I enjoy learning about the different soap recipes anyway.

Dostoevski is always great. When they first translated him, it is said that they edited him down to the story line, cutting out of his philosophical ideas. In Bros Karamazov, he said he was going to put in all his ideas, even if it ruined the story. His ideas, his view of reality is what makes the story, and makes it great.

Its not a book about sex and violence. The murder of Karamazov is about the failure of moral feeling in a man who has been overcome by his own philosophical maze. The 'violence' is the physical expression of something much worse, a man who is loosing his soul in the 'modern' world.

About the Author

Andrew Chevallier FNIMH, MCPP, is an experienced medical herbalist, healer, and author of books on botanical medicine. He is a fellow and past-president of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, and a member of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy. He also helped to found the BSc (Hons) Herbal Medicine course at Middlesex University.

Beautifully illustrated, in-depth reference on herbal and plant based medicine

Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine by Andrew Chevallier.

First published in 1996, this well-known reference was recently updated in a new 2016 edition. The book begins with general information regarding herbal medicine including how herbal medicine developed, herbal traditions from different parts of the world, and a history of the origins of herbal medicine. It contains information about more than 550 plants including both pharmacological information as well as the lore and traditional uses of plants.
The author estimates that of the 500,000 plants on earth, about 10,000 are used medicinally on a regular basis (Chevallier 55). The book provides detailed information on those plants which have been carefully researched for safety and efficacy are used most frequently. Entries include information regarding the cultivation, natural habitat, key actions and preparations of the plant, cautions and self-help uses. The book is generously illustrated with many full color photos and illustrations. Some of the items included are common food items including, for example, thyme, nutmeg, peppermint, asparagus, and oats. Many other plants will be much less familiar. Some of the plants are commonly available and others may be quite useful but difficult to locate in some areas.
The final chapters contain information regarding the culture, harvesting, and preparation of herbal remedies, safety of herbal preparations, and an index of herbal usage by ailment.
The author, Andrew Chevallier, a practicing medical herbalist for thirty years, helped to found the program in medical herbalism at Middlesex University in London which was the first of it's kind in a European university. He is a fellow and past-president of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH), a member of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy, and has written extensively in the field of herbal medicine.

Definitely a must for your herbal library!

Excellent book. Gives a broad range of plants. Not an in depth kind of book, but works great for quick look ups of plants not listed in many other books. I order herbs from all over, so this helps me find what I need, then I can do further research if I choose.

Great Herbal Reference Guide

I'd heard the author was very good, but I still was a bit skeptical since many herbalism books are terrible or a little sketchy on their research. I was very happy when I opened it up and saw the level of detail in this book. It's a very good reference guide from what I can tell. I haven't poured over the pages much at this point, but honestly, it looks fantastic if you need something that covers many, many herbs and their effects on the body.
