A Compelling Story of one Ship against an Alien Horde - Beautifully Written - Well Worth the Read

The Constitution is an old Legacy class ship, which has been called in to be turned into a Museum, much to the crew’s utter disgust. It is the last of the ships that defeated an enemy of aliens a long time ago in a war that nearly wiped out all of Earth and its fleet and all of the Earths colonies as well. But now the alien threat is gone, there are new ships with new ‘Smart Armour’, not the old style armour of the Constitution, which has 10metre thick armour all over her hull. Can anyone see where this is going?
The story does have the standard protagonists, the disgruntled, but Stoic Captain, the annoying but soon to be likeable Female Officer, who in this case is there to decommission the ship, and turn it into the museum, but ends up being the second in command alongside the already existing second in command, a gruff but trustworthy old friend who is loyal only to the Captain, and surprisingly doesn’t like the Female Officer. There is off course a brilliant Engineer and several other instrumental crew (command and otherwise) that make up a brilliant character list. And of course there is the dreaded Alien enemy, ‘The Swarm’ as they are known. They have previously been to Earth as mentioned, 75yrs before, and after a massive war, just left, but now they are back….and it's not really a surprise!! (I think you are reading the wrong book if it was?), but then again, if they didn’t come back, it would be a kind of pointless story – I mean where would the gripping space battles be!!
Yes we have all seen this story before, but it's what the Author does with it that counts.
And Nick Webb, as always, does an exceptional job. This is a tremendous story with astounding characters, and a clever and well written version of this genre. I really loved it. For starters, his characters are not immortal, and I have to give him major bonus points for that, I get sick of everyone always surviving every battle/engagement…
Although this is a well-worn path, Nick has given it his own flavour, and as such, his universe is captivating, beautifully detailed and with creative intelligent explanations. With his education, he is able to go into detail about the mechanics and technicalities a little more than most, giving his story a bit more of an edge I felt. The great thing is, he never gets too bogged down in detail, giving us just enough to make it interesting, but without making it tedious or getting lost in too much detail.
The action scenes and battles are gripping, strategic with compelling descriptions of the ship engagements, and I loved the weaponry used, and how it was described, the specific details he uses.
As for his characters, although I mentioned that they were a bit stereotypical, they still had depth to them, the Captain especially.
As with the his battles and star scapes, Nick does a wonderful job with his Characters, giving us in depth characters to both love and hate. And as the story progresses, and his characters develop, you find that these opinions change as well, showing his talent for writing engaging and believable people to tell his story.
It's why his books standalone from the others, the exceptional writing.
This is a terrific read, well worth the effort, as his is other works. I have already started on ‘Warrior’, the second part of this series.

Slow starting Space Opera

I began reading this in anticipation of disappointment and that's what I initially got. Frankly, the first few background chapters were so bad that I put the book aside for another SF action novel followed by a history of post-Columbus intercontinental biological cross-fertilization. Nevertheless, since I am somewhat both a mizer and a masochist, I picked it up again, and as I struggled on eventually found the tale to be pretty good space opera in the Doc. Smith tradition. The crew members of Constitution and their interactions are very much unoriginal original Star Trek. (We even have a chief engineer called Scotty. though female.) Still the battle scenes are exciting with lots of human sacrifice and the science behind the weapons isn't too bad although we all should know that given current physics and materials science spaceship armor is not likely to be very effective against near lightspeed projectles or antimatter particle weapons no matter how thick or of what composition,etc.

Melodrama, of which space opera is one variety, always rescues the protagonists from certain death and condemns minor characters to the cruelty of unjust fate. (For my generation whether in pulp or on the silver screen such tales were called cliff-hangers, or for you younger folk think Indiana Jones.) That's the case here and the mystery as with the "Cliff Hangers" of the 1930's and 1940's leaves us panting with anticipation for the next installment in the series. which it seems the author has in works. Okay, that's fine with me I enjoyed this one after we got past the clumsy background setting and in spite of the not so subtle bashing of apparently "President-for-life" Putin and resurrected Russian Imperialism and slaps at "not-so-much-in-the shadows" VP Joe. I'll buy the next book in the series and hope for improvements in the set-up and politics while expecting more of the John Wayne blood and thunder and good old fashioned let's kick some alien backside or goop or whatever. My advice to readers --- be patient for a good space-opera read and to the author --- work on integrating the necessary backgound and set-up information into the main story line. For the latter as a good example, look at how you had Grange 'fess up to why he and his deceased XO were nearly court-martialed and instead assigned to a career dead-end assignment. As Shakespeare reminds us in a "Midsummer's Night Dream" actions tell us the story better than verbose description.

I enjoyed this book and like stories where the old saves ...

I enjoyed this book and like stories where the old saves the new. In this case and old Captain and a very old ship which is being decommissioned. The ongoing battle with the new commander who is trying turn the ship into a museum and his wanting to have the ship ready to fight is a matter of who outsmarts who. Who knew his old obsolete ship would stand up take charge in the fight to save earth. I am really looking forward to the next book.

Porsche has many claims to uniqueness as a car maker. Here are a few of them:
* Throughout its life its auto manufacturing has been sister to a powerful product-engineering business with customers in all parts of the world.
* It has been a dedicated independent producer, in significant volume, of high-performance sports cars. In the 21st Century this image has been debased by its four-door adventures, but these too have sporting profiles.
* Until it hit the business buffers in 2009, Porsche was owned and controlled by powerful families that traced their origins to one iconic pioneer. No other car maker of substance could make that claim.
* Thanks to its steady production over the years of customer-friendly competition cars, Porsche can claim more victories and more championships than any other major marque.
For this author, however, one of Porsche's most fascinating characteristics is its powerful genetic makeup. It has been my privilege and pleasure to follow--in real time--the evolution of Porsche cars from the beginnings of 1948 to the present day. Over these years the pure Porsche, in the person of the 356 as it morphed into the 911, has staunchly represented the most robust bloodline in the motor industry.
Famously the 911 shrugged off all attempts to make it obsolete. In the late 1970s its sales refused to fall below the rate of 25 cars per day that then-chief Ernst Fuhrmann set as the minimum for production viability. When in 1981 new Porsche boss Peter Schutz asked, "What is the product we are making our money with?" he was told it wasn't the 928, whose volumes were too small. Neither was it the 924, which was made dealers happy but left little profit margin for Porsche. It was the long-neglected 911, which Schutz gave the kiss of life.
Another crisis was surmounted in the early 1990s with the launch of the Type 993. With its predecessor the 964, said new chief engineer Ulrich Bez, the management board "had come to the conclusion that the 911 was at its end." But instead of obliging them with something completely new, Bez created a new 911 in the shape of the 993, the last of the air-cooled Porsches.
"This was a car to decide whether or not Porsche had a future," said later chief Wendelin Wiedeking. "That was a very decisive car for Porsche," added engineer Volker Berkefeld. "It had to be good. Thank God it was good!" In model year 1996, with the cancellation of the 968 and 928 and the Boxster not yet launched, the 993 was the only car that Porsche could offer its network and its customers. Produced on Monday, July 15th, 1996, Porsche's millionth car was a 911 Carrera from the 993 range.
 Many forecast disaster for the 911 Carrera's transition to water-cooled power with the new Type 996 of the 1998 model year. Surely this would be more effete, less charismatic. But Porsche's engineers confounded the critics, creating a new 9l1 that was a fabulous basis for the development that still continues.
 One man had been the talisman for the 911's development, indeed for the continuity of the Porsche bloodline from the very beginning. He of course was Ferry Porsche. Ferry was in rude good health at the launch of the Boxster, the car that harked back to his original roadster of 1948. He was more fragile when he turned 88 years of age in September of 1997, when the new 996-based 911 Carrera was displayed for the first time at the Frankfurt Show.
 On March 27, 1998 Ferry Porsche died. The man who had served for so many decades as Porsche's "ideal customer" was no more. He was no longer available to motivate his team, to provide the touchstone that would determine whether a new-car proposal lived or died. Though he later had regrets about moving upstairs from the management board when all family members withdrew from Porsche management in 1972, Ferry had done his job well. Subtly, his views reinforced by the deep respect he commanded throughout the company and the Porsche world, Ferry guided the evolution of the model that was at the heart of Porsche's powerful appeal.
 The contribution of Ferry Porsche notwithstanding, the durability of the 356/911 concept has been unique in an industry that prides itself on being forward-looking. No other car maker can claim anything comparable. Chevrolet's Corvette is still with us after more than a half-century, however with sharp changes in styling and engineering that have vitiated any genetic continuity. Ferrari has remained true to its high-performance principles but with widely disparate designs. Both Jaguar and Aston Martin have struggled in the 21st century to reanimate DNA from their successful pasts.
 Only Morgan can point to a consistency of design that's comparable to that of the 356/911, dating from the introduction of its first four-wheeled model at the end of 1935. Using engines made by major auto companies, Morgan survives as a niche producer at three-figure annual volumes. Exemplary though its continuity has been, Morgan can't be seen as a challenger to the potency of the Porsche DNA.
 What has been the secret of the species Porsche? What has given it such strong survivability? Indeed it has been adaptable as well, elements of its strain being incorporated in such sharply differing models as the Cayenne and Panamera, making them visibly and identifiably members of the extended Porsche family. In part we can credit the continuity of Porsche's styling chiefs, from Erwin Komenda and Butzi Porsche through Tony Lapine and Harm Lagaay, not to mention such key interpreters as Dick Soderberg, Wolfgang Möbius, Pinky Lai and Grant Larson.
 Yet these men and others had to have something to work with, some starting point that could be identified as the origin of the species Porsche. Divining that origin is the purpose of this book. We know what the first Porsches looked like, the 356 variants of 1948 that established the lineage. But why did they look the way they did? What underpinned their design? What are the roots of the DNA that caused the 356 to be born with a configuration that departed so radically from the sports-car status quo?
 I invite you to join me as we turn back the clock to the late 1930s and the 1940s when the Porsche sports-car DNA was created. That's how far back we need to go to grasp the influences, the ideas, the men and the machinery that made up the Type 356. Some of the saga will be familiar but much will be new even to the most seriously shriven Porsche fanatic. It begins before World War 2 when the Porsche men created the car the world knew as the Volkswagen. Crude and humble though it was, it gave them plenty of ideas.

What are the roots of the DNA that caused the 356 to be born with a shape and style that departed so radically from the sports-car status quo? A DNA that still guides the design of the Porsches of the 21st century?

If anything the author understates the revelations in his definitive story of the birth of the Porsche car. Reminding us of the magnificent Auto Union racers designed by Ferdinand Porsche, he shows the astonishing road-car versions that were designed and part-built--including a five-passenger model. Clearly sorted for the first time are the VW-based cars that Porsche designed during the 1930s and the radical ten-cylinder coupe planned to be the first "Porsche".
 Wartime advances not only aided the Third Reich's campaigns but also produced powerful versions of the VW engine that inspired work on the 356. Ludvigsen explains how and why Porsche's engineers were forced to move to Austria, including Ferdinand Porsche's successful negotiations with Albert Speer, who tried to block their emigration.
 The reader looks over the shoulders of the men and women who forged the productive relationship with Italy's Cisitalia after the war, in parallel with the vital Swiss contacts that led to car production in Austria. Revealed for the first time is the Type 352 that the Swiss hoped to build in that neutral nation. And the Cisitalia relationship gives birth to the Type 370, a sensational racing coupe that's one of the missing links in the creation of the 356.
 Each page of this surprising book reveals intimate details of the 356 creators. Ferry Porsche, Karl Rabe and Erwin Komenda have starring roles as do Louise and Anton Piëch. Fabled adventurer Laszlo Asmasy, immortalized as the "English Patient", has more than a walk-on role. Leading stylists, designers and executives give their perspectives on the Type 356 and its significance.

Porsche - Origin of the Species

Carl Ludvigsen certainly has the lock on spectacular and spectacularly informative Porsche history book: first, in 1978, Excellence Was Expected, now out as a three volume edition 2.1 - unquestionably the best marquee history ever written, followed by Genesis of Genius, which took us from Professor Ferdinand Porsche's early years up to more or less the beginning of World War 2. Still awaited is a middle volume to filling this gap. Instead, we have Porsche Origin of the Species; which rather than be a standard chronological series draws together a series of sequential and parallel events, without any one of which there would be no Porsche.

Porsche father and son had always raced and been willing to spend un-booked company time designing cars. Sometimes this worked out, as with the design for Typ 22 Grand Prix car, which was purchased by Auto Union. Sometimes the designs appeared to be still born, as with the Typ 64 and Typ 114. Typ 64? I had taken it as an article of faith that the Typ 64 was the Porsche-side design number corresponding to the VW 60 10K - remember Typ 60 was Porsche's design number for the initial VW. Carl argues that the Typ 64 was not, even for the time, a particularly advanced design. Apparently Porsche developed the 60 10K as a purely VW effort - remembering of course that Porsche supplied the entire design and engineering staff to VW. The Typ 114 was the influential body design, on top of a VW-like pan. From there is not difficult to see the evolution; via the tube frame 356/1 and then the 356/2 bent sheet metal with attached aluminum body to the final monocoque.

On two levels the Cisitalia contract, which included several designs in addition to the nascent
Grand Prix car is just as important. First, is the well-known use of the Cisitalia payments to ransom/bail the Professor from his French prison. Not know to me at least is that the French government refunded the bail several years later. According to Piech, by the time the bail was returned, inflation was such that the funds were sufficient to buy several pair of shoes. Yet another necessary strand was the observation of the Cisitalia 202 - an expensive small sports car built from FIAT parts. This combined with the 60 10K was a necessary epiphany. Porsche would use VW parts to make a small but expensive sports car. Porsche also had a large, somewhat under employed, staff of around 150 in Gmünd; and Porsche was not loath to use them on an un-booked project. Perhaps most important: currency reform had come about and VW was paying royalties. Porsche had a money problem -- not too little but too much with its attendant tax liabilities. What better way to create a tax write-off than to build cars? There are perhaps half a dozen other threads woven into the story I haven't mentioned. It's not just the history, which is superb and has an amazing number of new facts, but the understanding of how they all interrelated and how they all had to happen and happen at the right time.

Finally we have the Mathé/Seinfeld Gmünd T 2222 ; Porsche 356/2-040, an Austrian Werkes engineering car until December of 1953, was purchased by Otto Mathé, who had previously purchased the Typ 60 10k in 1950. This is important since effectively Mathé was the car's only owner until his death fifty years later. Not clear is whether the car's rough condition is the way Porsche built it or patina acquired during Mathé's ownership. On one hand Carl relates the first Gmünd 356/2s shown in Switzerland had to be tarted-up to make them presentable and I was told while in Sweden Scania Vabis had to do the same with the last of Gmünd models. On the other hand, Otto Mathé was not one to baby his cars - while apparently never raced Porsche 356/2-040 was used as a tow car for his open wheel race car, and to this day wears a Werkes built roof rack for carrying tires. Unlike other high profie car T 2222 was not subjected to a restoration, but sympathetically gone through to make it safe to drive and close to original - for instance the reconversion to left had drive had been improperly executed. Now we get to the beauty of the book. The hstorical photographs come from the factory - one can't help wondering how many "previously unpublished" photographs still lurk in the Arkivs. The fly leaf and chapter heading photographs are beautifully shot by Michael Furman whle Klaus Schnitzler, Professor of Photography at Monclair State University, shot most of the contemporary photographs. Adding perspective and relating valued antidotes are Paul Russel on the restoration and Chuck Stoddard on the historical background and his own Gmünd coupe. And up front following Jerry Seinfeld's introduction is 356 Registry member, enthusiast and top flight automotive designer Freeman Thomas with "The Legacy of Erwin Komenda." I always learn something from Freeman- in this case the distinction between "floating" and connected shut lines.

As should be expected for $110.00, the reproduction and paper quality are superb. The book is large format - about a foot square, 343 pages. The only down side of a book this thick, is the tendency for its binding to separate - much like the original Excellence Was Expected - NEVER fold the covers flat, ALWAYS read on your lap or a Vee book stand.

Whoa!! I just received this book and it is one of the best Porsche related books to be released in a while. The book covers Seinfeld's Gmuend coupe (on the cover), but the book is so much more than that. As the title suggests, the book provides the history and origin of the Porsche automobile and Ludvigsen does this beautifully, with lovely detail and exquisite photos of people, documents, cars, etc. Wow! The book is done to a very high standard, printed on high quality paper. There are wonderful sidebar pieces in the book by many who have been involved with the design of Porsches (e.g., Freeman Thomas and Tony Hatter, among others) as well as those involved in the restoration of Seinfeld's car. Highest recommendation!!

Grade 1-4-- Time to board the Magic School Bus again with that wild, wacky, and wonderful teacher, Ms. Frizzle. After she teaches her class about the human body and they visit the science museum, Mrs. Frizzle shrinks the bus and the class--except Arnold, who swallows them. This gives Cole and Degen the chance for two parallel stories, inside and outside of Arnold. With the bus inside, Cole explains digestion from the stomach into the small intestines. Then the bus enters a blood vessel where readers can see the plasma, red and white blood cells, and the flow into the heart. From there the class, now out of the bus and garbed in operating room smocks and masks, flows with the blood cells, now with fresh oxygen, to the brain. They climb down the bones of the spine, follow nerves to see muscles work, and then finally catch up with the bus to emerge in the nasal cavity. Meanwhile on part of each facing page, Arnold has coped with being lost and alone and has made it back to the school. With an enormous sneeze he sends the bus out to join him in the parking lot. The class can now chart the body from actual experience. Cole concludes with a true-false test with answers to help readers distinguish reality from fantasy. As readers of the previous "Magic School Bus" books (Scholastic) know, this is an enjoyable look at factual material painlessly packaged with the ribbons and balloons of jokes and asides meant to appeal to kids. Degen's zany, busy, full-color drawings fill the pages with action and information far beyond the text. Using a variety of visuals, including notes, close-ups, and diagrams along with a variety of realistic kids, he moves the parallel stories to their conclusions. Kids will love this book. --Sylvia S. Fifth Food Group: Magic School Buses

Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen outdo themselves in "The Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body." It is their most ambitious collaboration yet, and it definitely doesn't disappoint.
As is the custom, the third book in this science series (written in 1989) picks up where the second story left off. Ms. Frizzle is showing her students a filmstrip about the human body. "We're going to learn all about ourselves," she says. Then she announces the next field trip - the class is heading to the museum to "see an exhibit about how our bodies get energy from the food we eat." However, anyone who has even an inkling as to the kind of person Ms. Frizzle is should know that things rarely, if ever, go according to plan. A field trip is never just a field trip when you're taking a ride aboard her magic school bus.
The Friz and her students stop at a park for lunch before arriving at the museum. Afterward, everyone goes back to the bus . . . except for Arnold! He's still sitting at a picnic table, daydreaming and eating a bag of Cheesie-Weesies. And before the class realizes what is happening, the bus shrinks to the size of a Cheesie-Weesie . . . where it is promptly downed in one gulp by Arnold!
"I thought we were going to the museum," says one student.
"There's been a slight change of plans," explains Ms. Frizzle. "We're being digested instead."
Why visit an exhibit about the human body when you have a magic school bus and a teacher like Ms. Frizzle who can take you directly to the source?
If "At the Waterworks" was like priming the pump, and "Inside the Earth" was like getting the ball rolling, "Inside the Human Body" is like plowing full-steam ahead. Cole and Degen have firmly established themselves as a literacy force to be reckoned with; this is proven in the confidence of the writing and the boldness of the illustrations. There is so much going on in this story that you almost need a scorecard to keep track of it all. It seems as though Cole and Degen are bound and determined to one-up themselves with every book they come out with.
A list of some things Ms. Frizzle educates her class about would include: blood cells (red and white), blood vessels, digestion, germs, the heart, lungs, molecules, oxygen, plasma, the small intestine, etc. Do you know what villi are? You will after you read this book! Any idea what the cerebral cortex does? Ms. Frizzle will show you! Ever wondered why you sneeze? The answer resides in this story!
"Inside the Human Body" deserves just as much, if not more, a home on a person's bookshelf as does "At the Waterworks" and "Inside the Earth." Cole and Degen loaded their latest adventure to the bursting-point with information. You can see the growth author and illustrator have taken since their inaugural effort with "At the Waterworks." They prove that some things do, indeed, get better with age.
At the end of "Inside the Human Body" is a true-false test to help readers distinguish what things were true in the story and what things were made up. And, of course, Ms. Frizzle drops another clue as to where her next great adventure will take us. I'm pretty sure the class will think of their next field trip as out of this world!
It doesn't seem possible, but Cole and Degen managed to improve upon an already-winning formula. They are both in top form with "Inside the Human Body," a field trip that will take you from the brain to the small intestine and back again. Well, what are you waiting for? Hitch a ride on the magic school bus!
As Ms. Frizzle herself would say, "Seatbelts, everyone!"

One of our kids loves reading this book over and over. It's terrific in part because there are side notations outside the narrative story which add depth and can be optional on those nights when this is the last of many books to be read together.

About the Author

Heartbreaking tale of witness

So this is a rough book, and I have been sitting here trying to decide whether to give it all five stars, because it did what it set out to do flawlessly, or to hold one back because as much as I liked it, I... don't think I can bear to read it again. You would have to be ignorant of history not to know that this story is going to be a tragedy; the only question then is just how tragic it's going to be. And Hawker doesn't pull any punches. She does a magnificent job, but... she does a -magnificent job-. You finish the book and you are cored out by your sense of loss, and the book echoes in your head like a bell, and leaves no room for anything else for a while.

So why read this book, if it's sad? Because it really was well done. I appreciated the complexity of the portrayals of both cultures and the individuals in them. At no point did I ever feel that someone had been caricatured as Evil or Noble or Good or Thoughtless. I loved the details of Pocahontas's birth culture, and the language use, and the deep sense of the land and its rhythms and complicated political realities. I liked seeing the contrast between it and the English. I liked watching the misunderstandings and the few moments of amity, and the weight they had, the feel that finding common ground between such unlike societies is hard work, luck, and often wholly dependent on personalities willing to be the bridge. And as horrible as it was, there was something fascinating about watching two cultures that could not co-exist slowly slide toward one another and collide. We watch one be subsumed by the other. We sense the inevitability of it. We are witnesses, and we know what we lose, and we know, because of how far down the historical timeline we're living, what we gained.

For a while, I was there. And I was glad. But I think Hawker did her work too well: I was relieved when it was over. Maybe as a subject matter this one cuts too close to home for me to find any hope in it. I think people who love this period of history and these cultures will find it a very worthy addition to their libraries. It makes everything very real.

I wish I Could Double my Stars to Ten

As a discerning reader, Tidewater took my breath away; as a writer, it left me humbled. Language is our extraordinary ability so often squandered and defiled these days. With Tidewater: A Novel of Pocahontas and the Jamestown Colony, Libbie Hawker has restored this precious gift to her readers. Those who might shy away from the word “lyrical” will sadly be missing out.

I am not prone to gushing. But this is by far one of the most beautiful, expressive novels I have read in quite a while. It is long; it demands care and attention. But the reward is deep involvement, from the natural settings to the people’s lives. You can feel the wind bite into bare skin, smell the last fragrant berries being harvested, and sense dark eyes ghosting through dense woods.

As the well-adapted ‘Naturals’ and the befuddled English settlers struggle against nature and each other, their survival becomes the focal point of the novel. Without unnecessary gore or heroics, you are placed squarely into the middle of their conflict, rooting for one then the other, wishing that none of it should have to be. Both sides need to stay true to their own culture. It was the only way they knew; their only way to live; their only way to die.

Tidewater is a novel I shall read again, if not for its story then for the enjoyment of its writing. As both are fused into this masterful novel, I will find new insights.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is truly an outstanding example of the best writing there is.

A must read

Having visited the site of the Jamestown Colony and walked on the replicas of the Virginia Company's ships, I found this novel to be eye-opening to say the least. I throughly enjoyed the way Ms. Hawker wove the personalities of each individual into the history presented. This is a well researched and enjoyably presented tale of our nation's beginnings....well done!!!

A Highlander Christmas Chapter One


The only thing stopping Grey from strangling the shivering man crouched in front of their hearth was that he didn’t wish to upset Grace. And since his wife already looked pale enough to pass out, Greylen MacKeage contented himself with glaring at his son-in-law and chief of police, Jack Stone, who had brought the half-frozen man to them.

Apparently also stunned by the news, Jack merely shrugged.

“Would you mind repeating what you just said, Mr. Pascal?” Grace whispered, clutching the arms of her chair. “As I don’t believe I heard you correctly the first time.”

Luke Pascal turned from warming his hands at the fire, his worried glance darting to Grey before returning to Grace. “When I went to NASA and asked to see her a couple of months ago, I was told that Camry hasn’t worked there since December of last year. Then when I went to her condo, I found out she had sold it sometime last spring. I’m sorry I’ve obviously shocked you, Dr. Sutter, but I assumed you knew. “

Honest to God, if Pascal didn’t stop calling his wife Dr. Sutter, Grey really was going to strangle the bastard. “And how is it that ye know our daughter?” he asked.

Luke Pascal stood up from his crouched position and faced Grey. “I’ve been communicating with Camry by e-mail for quite some time.” He shifted uncomfortably. “Or I had been up until this summer, when she suddenly stopped e-mailing me back.”

Grace suddenly jumped to her feet, which made Pascal step back. “You’re the Frenchman who was giving Camry fits?”

Pascal’s chill-drawn face flushed. “I prefer to think we were engaged in a lively scientific discussion. It certainly wasn’t my intention to give her fits.” He winced. “Though judging from some of her e-mails, I can see that I may have hit a nerve or two.”

“And you say she stopped e-mailing you last summer?”

“Right after I suggested that I should come to America so we could collaborate.”

“My daughter didn’t think that was a good idea?” Grey asked, drawing Pascal’s attention again.

The man took another step back. “According to her last e-mail, I would have to say no, she didn’t.”

“But you came anyway.”

Their slowly thawing guest looked at Grace, obviously knowing she was the scientist in the family and apparently deciding he’d rather deal with her. “I am this close to finally unlocking the secret to ion propulsion,” he said, holding his thumb and index finger an inch apart. “And I was sure that if Camry and I tackled the problem together, we could have a working prototype within a year.”

“And her reply was?”

“A rather succinct no,” he muttered, edging back toward the fire. His navy blue eyes moved from Grace to Grey. “You haven’t spoken with her at all in the last year?”

Jack snorted, and Grey shot him a glare, which he then turned on Pascal. “Camry’s been home several times, but she always led us to believe she was returning to Florida whenever she left.”

“And since she has a cell phone,” Grace interjected, “we never bother calling her lab.” She collapsed back in her chair, shaking her head. “I just spoke with her a few days ago, and she told me her work was going great.” She lifted distressed eyes to Grey. “Why didn’t she tell us she’d left NASA? And if she sold her condo, where is she living now?”

Not wanting to discuss family matters in front of a stranger, Grey headed toward the foyer. “Come, Pascal. I’ll take you to our resort hotel and get ye a room.”

“No,” Grace said, jumping to her feet again. “Luke will stay here at Gù Brath.”

“That isn’t necessary,” Pascal said, correctly reading Grey’s desire that he get the hell out of their house. “I really don’t wish to intrude. If I can just sleep in a warm bed for a couple of days to thaw out,” he said with an involuntary shiver, “and get some hot food in my stomach, I will be good to go. I really should be heading back to France anyway, before I find myself out of a job.”

“But I thought you came here to collaborate with Camry?”

“But Camry doesn’t wish to collaborate with me, Dr. Sutter.”

Grace waved that away, then suddenly looped her arm through his, walking him past Grey toward the stairs leading to the bedrooms. “Please call me Grace, Luke. I haven’t been called ‘Doctor’ in years. Where are your belongings?”

“In my rental car, buried under three feet of snow someplace out there,” he said, motioning with his hand. “I had no idea Maine got such fierce blizzards this early in the season. I thought February and March were your snowy months. I must have walked ten miles before Chief Stone came cruising by on his snowmobile.”

Grace stopped at the bottom of the stairs and turned to the men. “Jack, could you find Luke’s car and get his belongings for him?”

Jack nodded. “Not a problem, Mother Mac.”

She started walking up the stairs, Luke still in tow. “In the meantime, I’ll find you something to wear, and while you’re taking a warm shower, I’ll throw together a nice hot meal for you.”

They walked along the balcony, and Pascal gave one last wary glance toward the foyer before disappearing down the hall.

Grey turned to his son-in-law, but Jack raised his hand. “Give me two hours, and I’ll be able to tell you everything you want to know about Luke Pascal, right down to his birth weight.”

“And you’ll find out where the hell Camry is.”

“Well, that might be a little harder,” Jack told him. “If Cam’s been lying to us for over a year about where she’s working and living, she’s certainly smart enough not to leave a paper trail.”

“I’ll call her, and you can trace her cell phone signal.”

Jack shook his head. “That would require involving the feds, and I doubt they’d consider a father searching for his grown daughter to be a threat to homeland security.”

“Then use your own skills for tracking down runaways.”

“It often took me months to find those kids, Grey, and then most times it was sheer luck. Maybe Winter or Matt could help. Or Robbie.”

“No, I don’t wish to involve anyone else in this. Camry’s been lying to them as well, and I would rather find out her reason first, and not embarrass her in front of the entire family.”

Jack nodded. “I can respect that. I’ll quietly track her down, but it might take a while. And anyway, the solstice birthday bash is only a little over two weeks away. You can ask her what’s going on then.”

“She’s not coming this year. She claimed she couldn’t get away from work.”

“I’m sorry. It’s got to be hard finding out from a stranger that your daughter’s been lying to you. But what I can’t figure out is why.” Jack chuckled softly. “Of all your girls, Cam would be the one to throw us a curve, but outright lying?” He shook his head. “That’s the last thing I’d expect from her.”

Grey glanced up at the balcony. “She’s not the only one lying to us. About the only thing Pascal said that I believe is that the blizzard caught him by surprise. By the looks of his beard and the condition of his clothes, he’s been camping out for a while. Where, exactly, did ye find him?”

Jack stepped over to the door and put his hand on the knob. “About twenty miles north of town, on one of the tote roads leading to Springy Mountain.”

“And what excuse did he give for being out in the middle of nowhere?”

“He said he was looking for an old camp that his grandfather used to own. But the moment I introduced myself, he mentioned Camry’s name. That’s when I knew he’d been searching for whatever fell out of the sky and crashed north of here last summer.” Jack glanced up at the empty balcony, then back at Grey. “Are you really going to let him stay in the house?”

Grey found his first smile of the afternoon. “Keep your friends close and your enemies even closer, Stone.”

“And Pascal is the enemy?”

“Until he proves otherwise, he is.”

Luke stood under the blessedly hot shower spray, gritting his teeth against the pain of his toes thawing, and began shaving off his beard with the razor he’d found in the fully supplied bathroom. As the evidence of his last two months of living like a caveman slowly fell away, he wondered if he hadn’t just jumped out of the proverbial frying pan and into the fire.

First and probably most surprisingly, Grace Sutter MacKeage wasn’t at all what he’d been expecting. For a woman with enough academic degrees—two of which were doctorates—to wallpaper a house, she sure as hell didn’t appear to have one nerdy bone in her body. Luke knew she was in her mid-sixties and was the mother of seven girls, but she didn’t look a day over fifty.

Her husband, however, sent chills through Luke that had absolutely nothing to do with his state of near frostbite. Greylen MacKeage had to be closer to seventy, and every damn year of experience showed in his sharp, piercing green eyes. When Luke had innocently mentioned that Camry hadn’t worked for NASA for over a year, Greylen had appeared ready to kill the messenger—as if somehow it was his fault that Camry had been lying to them.

When Luke had found out his rescuer was Jack Stone, who he knew was married to Camry’s sister, Megan, he’d thought his luck had finally changed. That is, until he’d come face-to-face with the woman whose life’s work he had destroyed. It had been all he could do not to throw himself at Dr. Sutter’s feet and beg her forgiveness for destroying Podly.

Although to be fair, he’d only been trying to eavesdrop on Podly’s transmissions, not hijack the little satellite. And he sure as hell hadn’t meant to make it fall out of orbit. But to have it crash so close to Pine Creek . . . that was just outright eerie.

Then to have his childhood idol welcome him into her home and treat him with nothing but kindness? Well, he definitely was going to hell for his deceptions.

Luke turned to let the hot spray cascade over his clean-shaven face and started washing his hair. Stone hadn’t believed him about searching for an old family camp; Luke had read the suspicion in the quiet lawman’s eyes before he’d even finished telling the lie. So he’d switched to the half-truth that he knew Camry MacKeage, and that he thought she lived in Pine Creek. Chief Stone had then loaded Luke onto his snowmobile and driven the machine right through town, into the TarStone Mountain Ski Resort, and right up to what he could only describe as a castle. Hell, they’d even had to walk across a drawbridge to reach the front door!

So now what was he supposed to do? He’d just spent the last five months searching for Podly: the first three going over trajectory data, and the last two scouring Springy Mountain. And he still didn’t have a clue where that satellite was; the damn thing could be at the bottom of Pine Lake for all he knew.

Once again, Luke fought the overwhelming urge to throw himself at Grace’s feet, beg her forgiveness, then ask her to help him find her satellite that he had lost. But then all he had to do was picture Greylen MacKeage’s piercing green eyes, and remember the lethal-looking antique sword he’d seen hanging over the hearth. Confessing might be good for his soul, but getting skewered by an enraged husband was another matter entirely.

Which brought Luke’s thinking around to their daughter; did Camry take after her mother or her father?

Her father, he would guess, judging by some of her more scathing e-mails—which had actually fired his desire to meet her in person.

That is, until today. Now he wasn’t so sure he wanted to lock himself in a lab with Camry, because if she had inherited any of her daddy’s highlander genes, one of them might not come out alive.

Maybe Grace was the MacKeage he should be trying to collaborate with. He certainly wouldn’t mind fulfilling his childhood dream of working with the legendary woman. It was Grace Sutter MacKeage, after all, who had turned him on to space travel when, at the age of twelve, he’d come across an article she’d written in a science journal, where she’d talked about her ongoing search for a more efficient rocket fuel.

But she was probably on the phone to her daughter right now, telling Camry about his unexpected and decidedly unceremonious arrival. And Camry was probably telling her mother to kick him out on his frozen ass.

How had his altruistic endeavor turned into such a fiasco?

All he’d been trying to do was unlock the secret to ion propulsion, but he’d ended up destroying the final piece of the puzzle instead. Did Grace even know her forty-year-long experiment was scattered over several square miles of densely forested mountain terrain?

She had to. The entire civilized world knew something had crashed in these mountains; he just didn’t know if Grace was aware it was her beloved Podly.

Finally able to feel his toes again, Luke shut off the water and dried off. He wrapped the towel around his waist, padded into the large, tastefully decorated bedroom he’d been given, and stopped dead in his tracks.

While he’d been in the shower, someone had set clean clothes on the bed, started a roaring fire in the hearth, and placed a tray of food on a table in front of it.

Oh, yeah. He definitely was going to hell.

A Highlander Christmas- a delightful addition to the author's Highlander series

I found "A Highlander for Christmas" to be an utterly delightful and even moving read. The whole book reads like a breeze with it's likeable characters and easy to follow plot. The story had me in tears at times, and mind you, I don't tear up easily when I read a romance. Though the book is a stand alone and I certainly recommend it to anyone, I think any fans of Ms. Chapman should definitely pick this one up, particularly if they want a nice holiday treat filled with magic and miracles that will bring them back to visit the McKeage clan. I sure hope there are more books to come in this lovely series... would definitely love to read Fiona's story!

French rocket scientist Luke Pascal Renoir and NASA physicist Dr. Camry MacKeage have been exchanging emails. However, she quits NASA as magic and science seems a poor mix. Camry flees to Maine where she becomes a dog sitter whose BFFs are Tigger and Max.

Jack Stone and Camry's parents rescue Luke from certain death due to a blizzard on their frozen mountain top. The outsider mentions his corresponded with Camry shocking her family with her former and present occupation as they thought she was working in Florida. He further explains she said no to his request to collaborate on an ion propulsion model and abruptly stopped responding when he said he would like to meet her in the States. Luke went to NASA but she had quit. Her mom demands Luke amend his transgression by persuading Camry to come home to celebrate the solace with her family. He will learn a little bit of magic and a lot of love makes the heart pump faster.

The latest MacKeage whimsical romance stars the first daughter Camry who struggles with magic vs. science especially her heritage and Renoir. From the opening scene when the matriarch Dr. Grace welcomes a frozen Luke into the family while the patriarch Grey wants to leave him exposed to the blizzard, the cast makes for an engaging holiday time. Although long time fans will notice some similarity to Secrets of the Highlander, Janet Chapman cleverly spins the tale differently so that readers will enjoy celebrating A HIGHLANDER CHRISTMAS in Maine.

Smile and trust the magic

A sign of an interesting author is when you read a book by them for the first time - you start looking up their other books to peruse. I was unfamiliar with the Highlander series, but that made no difference in the satisfaction of this. It honestly isn't much of a Christmas book, the emphasis is on the solstice and the family celebrations of the birthdays that occur on that day.
Several lives interconnect, Camry who is fired from her job at NASA and hides it from her family and Luke who hero worships Camry's mother and believes he has made her satellite crash. Luke has other secrets as well; but the most important factor in order to enjoy this novel is to suspend your powers of disbelief as characters shift in and out of time and age and depend upon the power of enchantment. Sometimes it's nice to believe in the power of magic and love and family and if that is what you wish, then you will enjoy this `Highlander Christmas'.
