AN EARLY BOOK REPUDIATING "ROMISH" DOCTRINES

Ralph Woodrow is the author of many other books and publications such as Great Prophecies of The Bible, "Three Days And Three Nights" Reconsidered, etc. The prospective reader of this book should be aware that Woodward has since repudiated this book (written in 1966 when he was only 27) in The Babylon Connection?, and has also reconsidered his former rejection of the Christmas celebration in Christmas Reconsidered, and his former rejection of Easter in Easter: Is It Pagan?.
He wrote in the first chapter, "We believe the pages which follow prove it was this MIXTURE that produced that system which is known today as the Roman Catholic church. We do no doubt that there are many fine, sincere, and devout Catholics. It is not our intention to ... ridicule anyone whose beliefs we may disagree with. Instead, we would hope this book will inspire all people... to forsake Babylonish doctrines and seek a return to the faith that was once delivered unto the saints." (Pg. 6)
He says, "The early Christians did not consider the cross on which Jesus died a virtuous symbol, but rather as 'the accursed tree,' a device of death and 'shame' (Heb 12:2)... They never spoke of the cross as a piece of wood one might hang from a little chain around his neck or carry in his hand as a protector or charm." (Pg. 40) He adds, "Jesus died on ONE cross---what shape was it?... the Greek word from which 'cross' is translated... simply means an upright stake or post. If the instrument on which Jesus died was no more than this, it was not a 'cross' (as such) at all! This would clearly show the folly of many types of crosses being 'Christianized.'" (Pg. 45)
He notes, "At the Easter season it is not uncommon for Christians to attend sunrise services. It is assumed that such honor Christ because he rose from the dead on Easter Sunday morning just as the sun was coming up. But the resurrection did not occur at sunrise. When Mary Magdalene came to the tomb it was yet DARK---and the tomb was already empty! On the other hand, there was a type of sunrise service that was a part of ancient sun worship... such practices, being without Scriptural example, do indicate that mixtures have been made." (Pg. 137-138)
Of the time of the Inquisition, he observes, "Some of the popes that today are acclaimed as 'great' lived and thrived during those days. Why didn't they open the dungeon doors and quench the murderous fires that blackened the skies of Europe for centuries? ... the Inquisition was ordered by papal decree and confirmed by pope after pope! Can any believe that such actions were representative of Him who said to turn the cheek, to forgive our enemies, and to do good to them that despitefully use us?" (Pg. 101)
He argues, "It is generally acknowledged that December 25th was not the actual date on which Jesus was born and that many of today's Christian customs stem from pre-Christian origins. Does this mean, then, that Christians must refuse to share meals with family and friends during the season? Should one's mission in life be an anti-Christmas crusade? Right or wrong, Christmas is a firmly established day in our calendar and, all things considered, it is evident that there are many causes more fruitful than counterproductive attempts to do away with it... If Christians were to take such actions as ... pulling their children out of school during the Christmas season---lest they take part in programs or plays---they would unwittingly place themselves on the same side as the atheists! A fanatical opposition to Christmas can cause unnecessary hurt among family and friends... an avoidance of extremes, is in order." (Pg. 145)
Woodrow is a creative Bible teacher, and is not afraid of controversy. But the reader should read OTHERS of his many books, and not just this one early book, to gain a more correct perspective.
