Poor Layout; Few Practice Questions: All or Nothing Online

As a TESOL professional, I had high hopes for this product, but I was very disappointed. The layout of the book itself is cumbersome and hard to read and, worst of all, there are very few practice questions in the actual book. I wish I had known that the practice tests are NOT included in the book and are only available online and for a limited time after creating an account. To make matters worse, the online portal has a host of problems (incorrect answer choices, answers that are pre-marked, freezing, etc.) What's worse, the online tests do not allow for incremental practice. When using the online practice tests, the student is required to go through the entire test--all of the sections--rather than being able to practice one section at a time. I contacted the company to express my disappointment and their reply was that this book should not be used in a classroom setting and that they believe students like to practice several hours at a time. My students and I feel otherwise, so I wanted to take the opportunity to warn potential buyers of this book before they invest in it.

Good book with audio CD. Promises mobile but does not deliver. Requires registration that demands unnecessary info from readers

This is a very comprehensive book that covers all sections of the TOEFL exam, including reading, listening, speaking, and writing. It comes with two audio CDs that has practice exercises for the listening portion of the exam.
I tried to set up the online account and it failed twice. First, it was giving me an error when I was creating the account. The second time, the “save and continue” button wouldn’t do anything. After closing the browser and starting over a third time, I was finally successful. But not before their registration requiring me to supply them with the following pieces of information: Full name, email address, country, state, zip code and phone number. The registration will fail if you do not supply this information. So this gives me a very bad first impression of their online features.
After finally setting up the online account, I could access some videos (that are merely slides presented in the video format) and other contents that discuss study strategies for the test. What was really a welcome feature was the access to audio contents that are on the CDs. Today’s laptops do not come with CD/DVD drives so it is smart for Kaplan to include audio files online. However, I would have preferred an easier way to access the audio files without the required buggy registration process.
So overall, this is an okay preparation kit for the TOEFL. But you may be able to find a better one.
Why am I giving it only 2 stars? Because it promises more but delivers less. I’ll explain more below:
First, as I mentioned above, the buggy online interface that is slow and prone to errors.
Second, it mentions “Mobile” but doesn’t attempt to make it accessible for mobile devices. If Kaplan ‘really’ wants to make it accessible by mobile devices, make an electronic format of this book accessible online. I was disappointed to find that the book itself is not accessible through the online account even though you have to go through the hurdles to access the online contents that you have ‘paid for’.
Third (and this is perhaps more important for some of us who are privacy conscious): Why, Kaplan, do you need to know the Zip code and phone numbers of your readers? If we must provide this information, disclose this requirement upfront so potential buyers can make a well-informed decision before purchasing the book. It is not okay to just ask for this information without explaining why this information is needed from your readers who have already paid for this.

Good review for the advanced student

I am an ESL teacher and ordered this book to learn what my students are shooting for. This is quite a comprehensive guide which includes 2 CDs of audio files. When you register the book online, you also have access to 4 full-length practice tests and instructional videos to guide your prep, among other onilne resources. This is essential material, because some of the explanations in the book itself, are more complex and harder to understand than the questions and answers themselves. So having the material available in other formats than the written word is very helpful to some students.
I would recommend this to students who have the time to invest in actually using the resources, however for the borderline student, I think an actual prep class with time to talk to interact with a person, would be an asset. However for the advanced student, this would be great review.
